Heavy mass expansion, light-by-light scattering and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
Contributions from light-by-light scattering to (g_\mu-2)/2, the anomalous
magnetic moment of the muon, are mediated by the exchange of charged fermions
or scalar bosons. Assuming large masses M for the virtual particles and
employing the technique of large mass expansion, analytical results are
obtained for virtual fermions and scalars in the form of a series in (m_\mu
/M)^2. This series is well convergent even for the case M=m_\mu. For virtual
fermions, the expansion confirms published analytical formulae. For virtual
scalars, the result can be used to evaluate the contribution from charged
pions. In this case our result confirms already available numerical
evaluations, however, it is significantly more precise.Comment: revtex4, eps figure
Spin-gravity coupling and gravity-induced quantum phases
External gravitational fields induce phase factors in the wave functions of
particles. The phases are exact to first order in the background gravitational
field, are manifestly covariant and gauge invariant and provide a useful tool
for the study of spin-gravity coupling and of the optics of particles in
gravitational or inertial fields. We discuss the role that spin-gravity

Slepton Flavor Nonuniversality, the Muon EDM and its Proposed sensitive Search at Brookhaven
We analyze the electric dipole moment of the electron (), of the neutron
() and of the muon () using the cancellation mechanism in the
presence of nonuniversalities of the soft breaking parameters. It is shown that
the nonuniversalities in the slepton sector produce a strong violation of the
scaling relation in the cancellation region. An
analysis of and under the constraints of the current
experimental limits on and and under the constraints of the recent
Brookhaven result on shows that in the non-scaling region
can be as large as ()ecm and thus within reach of the
recently proposed Brookhaven experiment for a sensitive search for at

News from the Muon (g-2) Experiment at BNL
The magnetic moment anomaly a_mu = (g_mu - 2) / 2 of the positive muon has
been measured at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron with an
uncertainty of 0.7 ppm. The new result, based on data taken in 2000, agrees
well with previous measurements. Standard Model evaluations currently differ

Quantum physics in inertial and gravitational fields
Covariant generalizations of well-known wave equations predict the existence
of inertial-gravitational effects for a variety of quantum systems that range
from Bose-Einstein condensates to particles in accelerators. Additional effects
arise in models that incorporate Born reciprocity principle and the notion of a

Supervisors' Perceptions of the Performance of Cooperative Education Employees Working in Federal Agencies
Through cooperative education programs, many public agencies employ college students part time or intermittently and groom them for future full-time employment The combination of winnowing and nurturing that occurs in these programs is believed to produce higher performing employees This study tests this hypothesis by comparing Federal supervisors' perceptions of the performance of co-op employees with those recruited from other sources Data come from the 1992 Merit Principles Survey, US Merit Systems Protection Board The results indicate that co-op employees perform at high levels, but they do not outperform other employees as a whole Next, we compare the performance ratings of Federal workers from seven other recruitment sources to see if any source is superior Some interesting findings emerge Of course, performance ratings are an incomplete indicator of an employee's value to the organization These ratings merely reflect supervisors' perceptions, and while high performance is important, agencies may wish to promote other goals in their recruitment and retention efforts such as workforce diversityYeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Coupled free-carrier and exciton relaxation in optically excited semiconductors
The energy relaxation of coupled free-carrier and exciton populations in semiconductors after low-density ultrafast optical excitation is studied through a kinetic approach. The set of semiclassical Boltzmann equations, usually written for electron and hole populations only, is complemented by an additional equation for the exciton distribution. The equations are coupled by reaction terms describing phonon-mediated exciton binding and dissociation. All the other relevant scattering mechanisms, such as carrier-carrier, carrier-phonon, and exciton-phonon interactions, are also included. The resulting system of rate equations in reciprocal space is solved by an extended ensemble Monte Carlo method. As a first application, we show results for the dynamics of bulk GaAs in the range from 1 to ∼200 ps after photoexcitation. The build-up of an exciton population and its sensitivity to the excitation conditions are discussed in detail. As a consequence of the pronounced energy dependence of the LO-phonon-assisted transition probabilities between free-pair states and excitons, it is found that the efficiency of the exciton-formation process and the temporal evolution of the resulting population are sensitive to the excitation energy.
