Smectic blue phases: layered systems with high intrinsic curvature
We report on a construction for smectic blue phases, which have quasi-long
range smectic translational order as well as three dimensional crystalline
order. Our proposed structures fill space by adding layers on top of a minimal
surface, introducing either curvature or edge defects as necessary. We find
that for the right range of material parameters, the favorable saddle-splay
energy of these structures can stabilize them against uniform layered
structures. We also consider the nature of curvature frustration between mean
curvature and saddle-splay.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
A possible minimal gauge-Higgs unification
A possible minimal model of the gauge-Higgs unification based on the higher
dimensional spacetime M^4 X (S^1/Z_2) and the bulk gauge symmetry SU(3)_C X
SU(3)_W X U(1)_X is constructed in some details. We argue that the Weinberg
angle and the electromagnetic current can be correctly identified if one
introduces the extra U(1)_X above and a bulk scalar triplet. The VEV of this
scalar as well as the orbifold boundary conditions will break the bulk gauge
symmetry down to that of the standard model. A new neutral zero-mode gauge
boson Z' exists that gains mass via this VEV. We propose a simple fermion
content that is free from all the anomalies when the extra brane-localized
chiral fermions are taken into account as well. The issues on recovering a
standard model chiral-fermion spectrum with the masses and flavor mixing are
also discussed, where we need to introduce the two other brane scalars which
also contribute to the Z' mass in the similar way as the scalar triplet. The
neutrinos can get small masses via a type I seesaw mechanism. In this model,
the mass of the Z' boson and the compactification scale are very constrained as
respectively given in the ranges: 2.7 TeV < m_Z' < 13.6 TeV and 40 TeV < 1/R <
200 TeV.Comment: 20 pages, revised versio
Lepton polarization asymmetry and forward backward asymmetry in exclusive B->K_1 tau^(+)tau^(-) decay in universal extra dimension scenario
Decay rate, forward-backward asymmetry and polarization asymmetries of final
state leptons in B-> K_{1}tau ^{+}tau ^{-}, where K_{1} is the axial vector
meson, are calculated in Standard Model and in the universal extra dimension
(UED) model. The sensitivity of the observables on the compactification radius
, the only unknown paramter in UED model, is studied. Finally, the helicity
fractions of the final state K_{1} are calculated and their dependence on the
compactification radius is discussed. This analysis of helicity fraction is
briefly extended to B->K^{*}l ^{+}l ^{-}(l =e,mu) and compared with the other
approaches exist in the literatureComment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Associated Production of a KK-Graviton with a Higgs Boson via Gluon Fusion at the LHC
In order to solve the hierarchy problem, several extra-dimensional models
have received considerable attention. We have considered a process where a
Higgs boson is produced in association with a KK-graviton () at the
LHC. At the leading order, this process occurs through gluon fusion mechanism
via a quark loop. We compute the cross section and
examine some features of this process in the ADD model. We find that the quark
in the loop does not decouple in the large quark-mass limit just as in the case
of process. We compute the cross section of this process for the case
of the RS model also. We examine the feasibility of this process being observed
at the LHC.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. Calculation in the Higgs effective theory

HLA-DP on Epithelial Cells Enables Tissue Damage by NKp44+ Natural Killer Cells in Ulcerative Colitis
Background & Aims: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by severe inflammation and destruction of the intestinal epithelium, and is associated with specific risk single nucleotide polymorphisms in HLA class II. Given the recently discovered interactions between subsets of HLA-DP molecules and the activating natural killer (NK) cell receptor NKp44, genetic associations of UC and HLA-DP haplotypes and their functional implications were investigated. Methods: HLA-DP haplotype and UC risk association analyses were performed (UC: n = 13,927; control: n = 26,764). Expression levels of HLA-DP on intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in individuals with and without UC were quantified. Human intestinal 3-dimensional (3D) organoid cocultures with human NK cells were used to determine functional consequences of interactions between HLA-DP and NKp44. Results: These studies identified HLA-DPA1∗01:03-DPB1∗04:01 (HLA-DP401) as a risk haplotype and HLA-DPA1∗01:03-DPB1∗03:01 (HLA-DP301) as a protective haplotype for UC in European populations. HLA-DP expression was significantly higher on IECs of individuals with UC compared with controls. IECs in human intestinal 3D organoids derived from HLA-DP401pos individuals showed significantly stronger binding of NKp44 compared with HLA-DP301pos IECs. HLA-DP401pos IECs in organoids triggered increased degranulation and tumor necrosis factor production by NKp44+ NK cells in cocultures, resulting in enhanced epithelial cell death compared with HLA-DP301pos organoids. Blocking of HLA-DP401–NKp44 interactions (anti-NKp44) abrogated NK cell activity in cocultures. Conclusions: We identified an UC risk HLA-DP haplotype that engages NKp44 and activates NKp44+ NK cells, mediating damage to intestinal epithelial cells in an HLA-DP haplotype–dependent manner. The molecular interaction between NKp44 and HLA-DP401 in UC can be targeted by therapeutic interventions to reduce NKp44+ NK cell–mediated destruction of the intestinal epithelium in UC.</p
Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics in Gravity with Entropy Corrections
We study the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in
cosmology. We consider the universe as a closed bounded system filled with
component fluids in the thermal equilibrium with the cosmological boundary. We
use two different cosmic horizons: the future event horizon and the apparent
horizon. We show the conditions under which the GSL will be valid in specific
scenarios of the quintessence and the phantom energy dominated eras. Further we
associate two different entropies with the cosmological horizons: with a
logarithmic correction term and a power-law correction term. We also find the
conditions for the GSL to be satisfied or violated by imposing constraints on
model parameters.Comment: 17 pages, no figure, title changed, version accepted for publication

Search for TeV-scale gravity signatures in high-mass final states with leptons and jets with the ATLAS detector at sqrt [ s ] = 13TeV
A search for physics beyond the Standard Model, in final states with at least one high transverse momentum charged lepton (electron or muon) and two additional high transverse momentum leptons or jets, is performed using 3.2 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 at √s = 13 TeV. The upper end of the distribution of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of leptons and jets is sensitive to the production of high-mass objects. No excess of events beyond Standard Model predictions is observed. Exclusion limits are set for models of microscopic black holes with two to six extra dimensions
Search for high-mass new phenomena in the dilepton final state using proton–proton collisions at View the MathML sources=13TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search is conducted for both resonant and non-resonant high-mass new phenomena in dielectron and dimuon final states. The search uses View the MathML source3.2fb−1 of proton–proton collision data, collected at View the MathML sources=13TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015. The dilepton invariant mass is used as the discriminating variable. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed; therefore limits are set on the signal model parameters of interest at 95% credibility level. Upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for resonances decaying to dileptons, and the limits are converted into lower limits on the resonance mass, ranging between 2.74 TeV and 3.36 TeV, depending on the model. Lower limits on the ℓℓqqℓℓqq contact interaction scale are set between 16.7 TeV and 25.2 TeV, also depending on the mode
