    Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation

    The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong alternating field of high frequency ω\omega is studied in terms of the Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent tunneling current I(t)I(t) is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions on the physical parameters, the Fourier component InI_{n} is sharply peaked at n=ΔEℏωn=\frac {\Delta E} {\hbar \omega}, where ΔE\Delta E is the spacing between two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear process of nn photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system. It is also conjectured that this effect (which so far is studied mainly in the context of nonlinear optics) might be experimentally feasible.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex, 7 figures are available upon request from [email protected], submitted to Phys.Rev.

    A multi-center study on the attitudes of Malaysian emergency health care staff towards allowing family presence during resuscitation of adult patients

    BACKGROUND The practice of allowing family members to witness on-going active resuscitation has been gaining ground in many developed countries since it was first introduced in the early 1990s. In many Asian countries, the acceptability of this practice has not been well studied. AIM We conducted a multi-center questionnaire study to determine the attitudes of health care professionals in Malaysia towards family presence to witness ongoing medical procedures during resuscitation. METHODS Using a bilingual questionnaire (in Malay and English language), we asked our respondents about their attitudes towards allowing family presence (FP) as well as their actual experience of requests from families to be allowed to witness resuscitations. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the many variables and a positive attitude towards FP. RESULTS Out of 300 health care professionals who received forms, 270 responded (a 90% response rate). Generally only 15.8% of our respondents agreed to allow relatives to witness resuscitations, although more than twice the number (38.5%) agreed that relatives do have a right to be around during resuscitation. Health care providers are significantly more likely to allow FP if the procedures are perceived as likely to be successful (e.g., intravenous cannulation and blood taking as compared to chest tube insertion). Doctors were more than twice as likely as paramedics to agree to FP (p-value = 0.002). This is probably due to the Malaysian work culture in our health care systems in which paramedics usually adopt a 'follow-the-leader' attitude in their daily practice. CONCLUSION The concept of allowing FP is not well accepted among our Malaysian health care providers

    Hyperbolic contraction measuring systems for extensional flow

    In this paper an experimental method for extensional measurements on medium viscosity fluids in contraction flow is evaluated through numerical simulations and experimental measurements. This measuring technique measures the pressure drop over a hyperbolic contraction, caused by fluid extension and fluid shear, where the extensional component is assumed to dominate. The present evaluative work advances our previous studies on this experimental method by introducing several contraction ratios and addressing different constitutive models of varying shear and extensional response. The constitutive models included are those of the constant viscosity Oldroyd-B and FENE-CR models, and the shear-thinning LPTT model. Examining the results, the impact of shear and first normal stress difference on the measured pressure drop are studied through numerical pressure drop predictions. In addition, stream function patterns are investigated to detect vortex development and influence of contraction ratio. The numerical predictions are further related to experimental measurements for the flow through a 15:1 contraction ratio with three different test fluids. The measured pressure drops are observed to exhibit the same trends as predicted in the numerical simulations, offering close correlation and tight predictive windows for experimental data capture. This result has demonstrated that the hyperbolic contraction flow is well able to detect such elastic fluid properties and that this is matched by numerical predictions in evaluation of their flow response. The hyperbolical contraction flow technique is commended for its distinct benefits: it is straightforward and simple to perform, the Hencky strain can be set by changing contraction ratio, non-homogeneous fluids can be tested, and one can directly determine the degree of elastic fluid behaviour. Based on matching of viscometric extensional viscosity response for FENE-CR and LPTT models, a decline is predicted in pressure drop for the shear-thinning LPTT model. This would indicate a modest impact of shear in the flow since such a pressure drop decline is relatively small. It is particularly noteworthy that the increase in pressure drop gathered from the experimental measurements is relatively high despite the low Deborah number range explored

    The viability of rare earth ions as fluorescent coloring additives for dental porcelain was investigated. The data presented allow the formulation of porcelain with specific color properties under illumination by ultraviolet light.     Multilocus sequence typing of invasive group B Streptococcus in central area of Taiwan

    Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) (Streptococcus agalactiae) is an important pathogen in neonates, pregnant women, and adults with underlying disease. Methods: Fifty clinical isolates were collected during the period 2001-2004 and analyzed by multilocus sequence typing and capsular serotyping. Results: The six major sequence types (STs) identified by multilocus sequence typing were ST1, ST12, ST19, ST17, ST23, and ST10. Five major clonal complexes (CCs) and one single ST (ST61) from 11 different STs were found. CC1 (n = 14) was the most common one, followed by CC12 (n = 13), CC19 (n = 9), CC17 (n = 7), and CC23 (n = 6). The most common serotypes were serotype III, followed by Ib, V, Ia, and IV. The most invasive strains in adults belonged to ST1 (CC1) and serotype V, and those in neonates belonged to 5117 (CC17) and serotype III. In addition, ST19 was distributed in adults and neonates. Conclusions: These results are similar to those of previous reports, but some geographic differences were found, suggesting that limited clonal lineages play important roles in GBS-associated diseases worldwide. Continued tracking of GBS in the population through clinical isolates is important for epidemiologic investigations and vaccine development. Copyright (C) 2011, Taiwan Society of Microbiology.
