    The Rotation Measure and 3.5mm Polarization of Sgr A*

    We report the detection of variable linear polarization from Sgr A* at a wavelength of 3.5mm, the longest wavelength yet at which a detection has been made. The mean polarization is 2.1 +/- 0.1% at a position angle of 16 +/- 2 deg with rms scatters of 0.4% and 9 deg over the five epochs. We also detect polarization variability on a timescale of days. Combined with previous detections over the range 150-400GHz (750-2000 microns), the average polarization position angles are all found to be consistent with a rotation measure of -4.4 +/- 0.3 x 10^5 rad/m^2. This implies that the Faraday rotation occurs external to the polarized source at all wavelengths. This implies an accretion rate ~0.2 - 4 x 10^-8 Msun/yr for the accretion density profiles expected of ADAF, jet and CDAF models and assuming that the region at which electrons in the accretion flow become relativistic is within 10 R_S. The inferred accretion rate is inconsistent with ADAF/Bondi accretion. The stability of the mean polarization position angle between disparate polarization observations over the frequency range limits fluctuations in the accretion rate to less than 5%. The flat frequency dependence of the inter-day polarization position angle variations also makes them difficult to attribute to rotation measure fluctuations, and suggests that both the magnitude and position angle variations are intrinsic to the emission.Comment: Ap.J.Lett. accepte

    Imports From China and Food Safety Issues

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) increased attention to food imports from China is an indicator of safety concerns as imported food becomes more common in the United States. U.S. food imports from China more than tripled in value between 2001 and 2008. Addressing safety risks associated with these imports is difficult because of the vast array of products from China, China’s weak enforcement of food safety standards, its heavy use of agricultural chemicals, and its considerable environmental pollution. FDA import refusal data highlight food safety problems that appear to recur in trade and where FDA has focused its import alerts and monitoring efforts. FDA refusals of food shipments from China suggest recurring problems with “filth,” unsafe additives, labeling (typically introduced in food processing and handling), and veterinary drug residues in fish and shellfish (introduced at the farm). Chinese authorities try to control food export safety by certifying exporters and the farms that supply them.     Approach to equilibrium for the phonon Boltzmann equation

    We study the asymptotics of solutions of the Boltzmann equation describing the kinetic limit of a lattice of classical interacting anharmonic oscillators. We prove that, if the initial condition is a small perturbation of an equilibrium state, and vanishes at infinity, the dynamics tends diffusively to equilibrium. The solution is the sum of a local equilibrium state, associated to conserved quantities that diffuse to zero, and fast variables that are slaved to the slow ones. This slaving implies the Fourier law, which relates the induced currents to the gradients of the conserved quantities.Comment: 23 page

    X-ray Bursts from the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar XTE J1814-338

    Since the discovery of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 a total of 27 thermonuclear bursts have been observed from the source with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Spectroscopy of the bursts, as well as the presence of continuous burst oscillations, suggests that all but one of the bursts are sub-Eddington. The remaining burst has the largest peak bolometric flux of 2.64 x E^-8 erg/sec/cm^2, as well as a gap in the burst oscillations, similar to that seen in Eddington limited bursts from other sources. Assuming this burst was Eddington limited we obtain a source distance of about 8 kpc. All the bursts show coherent oscillations at the 314.4 Hz spin frequency. The burst oscillations are strongly frequency and phase locked to the persistent pulsations. Only two bursts show evidence for frequency drift in the first few seconds following burst onset. In both cases the initial drift corresponds to a spin down of a few tenths of a Hz. The large oscillation amplitude during the bursts confirms that the burst flux is modulated at the spin frequency. We detect, for the first time, a significant first harmonic component in burst oscillations. The ratio of countrate in the first harmonic to that in the fundamental can be > 0.25 and is, on average, less than that of the persistent pulsations. If the pulsations result from a single bright region on the surface, the harmonic strength suggests the burst emission is beamed, perhaps due to a stronger magnetic field than in non-pulsing LMXBs.     We describe a quantum error correction scheme aimed at protecting a flow of quantum information over long distance communication. It is largely inspired by the theory of classical convolutional codes which are used in similar circumstances in classical communication. The particular example shown here uses the stabilizer formalism, which provides an explicit encoding circuit. An associated error estimation algorithm is given explicitly and shown to provide the most likely error over any memoryless quantum channel, while its complexity grows only linearly with the number of encoded qubits.Comment: 4 pages, uses revtex4.     Interaction-induced impeding of decoherence and anomalous diffusion

    We study how the interplay of dissipation and interactions affects the dynamics of a bosonic many-body quantum system. In the presence of both dissipation and strongly repulsive interactions, observables such as the coherence and the compressibility display three dynamical regimes: an initial exponential variation followed by a power-law regime and finally a slow exponential convergence to their asymptotic values corresponding to the infinite temperature state. These very long-time scales arise as dissipation forces the population of states disfavored by interactions. The long-time, strong coupling dynamics are understood by performing a mapping onto a classical diffusion process displaying non-Brownian behavior. While both dissipation and strong interactions tend to suppress coherence when acting separately, we find that strong interaction impedes the decoherence process generated by the dissipation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Effects of NHC-Backbone Substitution on Efficiency in Ruthenium-Based Olefin Metathesis

    series of ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with varying degrees of backbone and N-aryl substitution have been prepared. These complexes show greater resistance to decomposition through C−H activation of the N-aryl group, resulting in increased catalyst lifetimes. This work has utilized robotic technology to examine the activity and stability of each catalyst in metathesis, providing insights into the relationship between ligand architecture and enhanced efficiency. The development of this robotic methodology has also shown that, under optimized conditions, catalyst loadings as low as 25 ppm can lead to 100% conversion in the ring-closing metathesis of diethyl diallylmalonate
