Effective one-dimensional description of confined diffusion biased by a transverse gravitational force
Diffusion of point-like non interacting particles in a two-dimensional (2D)
channel of varying cross section is considered. The particles are biased by a
constant force in the transverse direction. We apply our recurrence mapping
procedure, which enables us to derive an effective one-dimensional (1D)
evolution equation, governing the 1D density of the particles in the channel.
In the limit of stationary flow, we arrive at an extended Fick-Jacobs equation,
corrected by an effective diffusion coefficient D(x), depending on the
longitudinal coordinate x. Our result is an approximate formula for D(x),
involving also influence of the transverse force. Our calculations are verified
on the stationary diffusion in a linear cone, which is exactly solvable.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted in Phys. Rev.
STS-1 mission contamination evaluation approach
The space transportation system 1 mission will be the first opportunity to assess the induced environment of the orbiter payload bay region. Two tools were developed to aid in this assessment. The shuttle payload contamination evaluation computer program was developed to provide an analytical tool for prediction of the induced molecular contamination environment of the space shuttle orbiter during its onorbit operations. An induced environment contamination monitor was constructed and tested to measure the space shuttle orbiter contamination environment inside the payload bay during ascent and descent and inside and outside the payload bay during the onorbit phase. Measurements are to be performed during the four orbital flight test series. Measurements planned for the first flight are described and predicted environmental data are discussed. The results indicate that the expected data are within the measurement range of the induced environment contamination monitor instruments evaluated, and therefore it is expected that useful contamination environmental data will be available after the first flight
Shuttle on-orbit contamination and environmental effects
Ensuring the compatibility of the space shuttle system with payloads and payload measurements is discussed. An extensive set of quantitative requirements and goals was developed and implemented by the space shuttle program management. The performance of the Shuttle system as measured by these requirements and goals was assessed partly through the use of the induced environment contamination monitor on Shuttle flights 2, 3, and 4. Contamination levels are low and generally within the requirements and goals established. Additional data from near-term payloads and already planned contamination measurements will complete the environment definition and allow for the development of contamination avoidance procedures as necessary for any payload
Engineering Quantum States, Nonlinear Measurements, and Anomalous Diffusion by Imaging
We show that well-separated quantum superposition states, measurements of
strongly nonlinear observables, and quantum dynamics driven by anomalous
diffusion can all be achieved for single atoms or molecules by imaging
spontaneous photons that they emit via resonance florescence. To generate
anomalous diffusion we introduce continuous measurements driven by L\'evy
processes, and prove a number of results regarding their properties. In
particular we present strong evidence that the only stable L\'evy density that
can realize a strictly continuous measurement is the Gaussian.Comment: revtex4-1, 17 pages, 7 eps figure
Locally Optimal Control of Quantum Systems with Strong Feedback
For quantum systems with high purity, we find all observables that, when
continuously monitored, maximize the instantaneous reduction in the von Neumann
entropy. This allows us to obtain all locally optimal feedback protocols with
strong feedback, and explicit expressions for the best such protocols for
systems of size N <= 4. We also show that for a qutrit the locally optimal
protocol is the optimal protocol for a given range of control times, and derive
an upper bound on all optimal protocols with strong feedback.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex4. v2: published version (some errors corrected
Durability of zirconia thermal-barrier ceramic coatings on air-cooled turbine blades in cyclic jet engine operation
Thermal barrier ceramic coatings of stabilized zirconia over a bond coat of Ni Cr Al Y were tested for durability on air cooled turbine rotor blades in a research turbojet engine. Zirconia stabilized with either yttria, magnesia, or calcia was investigated. On the basis of durability and processing cost, the yttria stabilized zirconia was considered the best of the three coatings investigated
Entropic particle transport: higher order corrections to the Fick-Jacobs diffusion equation
Transport of point-size Brownian particles under the influence of a constant
and uniform force field through a three-dimensional channel with smoothly
varying periodic cross-section is investigated. Here, we employ an asymptotic
analysis in the ratio between the difference of the widest and the most narrow
constriction divided through the period length of the channel geometry. We
demonstrate that the leading order term is equivalent to the Fick-Jacobs
approximation. By use of the higher order corrections to the probability
density we derive an expression for the spatially dependent diffusion
coefficient D(x) which substitutes the constant diffusion coefficient present
in the common Fick-Jacobs equation. In addition, we show that in the diffusion
dominated regime the average transport velocity is obtained as the product of
the zeroth-order Fick-Jacobs result and the expectation value of the spatially
dependent diffusion coefficient . The analytic findings are corroborated
with the precise numerical results of a finite element calculation of the
Smoluchowski diffusive particle dynamics occurring in a reflection symmetric
sinusoidal-shaped channel.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Stochastic Analysis of a Churn-Tolerant Structured Peer-to-Peer Scheme
We present and analyze a simple and general scheme to build a churn
(fault)-tolerant structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network. Our scheme shows how to
"convert" a static network into a dynamic distributed hash table(DHT)-based P2P
network such that all the good properties of the static network are guaranteed
with high probability (w.h.p). Applying our scheme to a cube-connected cycles
network, for example, yields a degree connected network, in which
every search succeeds in hops w.h.p., using messages,
where is the expected stable network size. Our scheme has an constant
storage overhead (the number of nodes responsible for servicing a data item)
and an overhead (messages and time) per insertion and essentially
no overhead for deletions. All these bounds are essentially optimal. While DHT
schemes with similar guarantees are already known in the literature, this work
is new in the following aspects:
(1) It presents a rigorous mathematical analysis of the scheme under a
general stochastic model of churn and shows the above guarantees;
(2) The theoretical analysis is complemented by a simulation-based analysis
that validates the asymptotic bounds even in moderately sized networks and also
studies performance under changing stable network size;
(3) The presented scheme seems especially suitable for maintaining dynamic
structures under churn efficiently. In particular, we show that a spanning tree
of low diameter can be efficiently maintained in constant time and logarithmic
number of messages per insertion or deletion w.h.p.
