Smart Meter Privacy: A Utility-Privacy Framework
End-user privacy in smart meter measurements is a well-known challenge in the
smart grid. The solutions offered thus far have been tied to specific
technologies such as batteries or assumptions on data usage. Existing solutions
have also not quantified the loss of benefit (utility) that results from any
such privacy-preserving approach. Using tools from information theory, a new
framework is presented that abstracts both the privacy and the utility
requirements of smart meter data. This leads to a novel privacy-utility
tradeoff problem with minimal assumptions that is tractable. Specifically for a
stationary Gaussian Markov model of the electricity load, it is shown that the
optimal utility-and-privacy preserving solution requires filtering out
frequency components that are low in power, and this approach appears to
encompass most of the proposed privacy approaches.Comment: Accepted for publication and presentation at the IEEE SmartGridComm.

The StoreGate: a Data Model for the Atlas Software Architecture
The Atlas collaboration at CERN has adopted the Gaudi software architecture
which belongs to the blackboard family: data objects produced by knowledge
sources (e.g. reconstruction modules) are posted to a common in-memory data
base from where other modules can access them and produce new data objects. The
StoreGate has been designed, based on the Atlas requirements and the experience
of other HENP systems such as Babar, CDF, CLEO, D0 and LHCB, to identify in a
simple and efficient fashion (collections of) data objects based on their type
and/or the modules which posted them to the Transient Data Store (the
blackboard). The developer also has the freedom to use her preferred key class
to uniquely identify a data object according to any other criterion. Besides
this core functionality, the StoreGate provides the developers with a powerful
interface to handle in a coherent fashion persistable references, object
lifetimes, memory management and access control policy for the data objects in
the Store. It also provides a Handle/Proxy mechanism to define and hide the
cache fault mechanism: upon request, a missing Data Object can be transparently
created and added to the Transient Store presumably retrieving it from a
persistent data-base, or even reconstructing it on demand.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Effect of materials on the urban thermal environment a CFD simulation approach
Use of high albedo materials reduces the amount of solar radiation absorbed through building envelops and urban structures and thus keeping their surfaces cooler. The cooling energy savings by using high albedo materials have been well documented. Higher surface temperatures add to increasing the ambient temperature as convection intensity is higher. Such temperature increase has significant impacts on the air conditioning energy utilization in hot climates. This study makes use of a parametric approach by varying the temperature of building facades to represent commonly used materials and hence analyzing its effect on the air temperature through a series of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations. A part of the existing CBD (Central Business District) area of Singapore was selected for the study. Series of CFD simulations have been carried out using the software CFX-5.6. Wind tunnel experiments were also conducted for validation. It was found that at low wind speeds, the effect of materials on the air temperature was significant and the temperature at the middle of a narrow canyon increased up to 2.52°C with the façade material having lowest albedo.<br /
Deep Eyes: Binocular Depth-from-Focus on Focal Stack Pairs
Human visual system relies on both binocular stereo cues and monocular
focusness cues to gain effective 3D perception. In computer vision, the two
problems are traditionally solved in separate tracks. In this paper, we present
a unified learning-based technique that simultaneously uses both types of cues
for depth inference. Specifically, we use a pair of focal stacks as input to
emulate human perception. We first construct a comprehensive focal stack
training dataset synthesized by depth-guided light field rendering. We then
construct three individual networks: a Focus-Net to extract depth from a single
focal stack, a EDoF-Net to obtain the extended depth of field (EDoF) image from
the focal stack, and a Stereo-Net to conduct stereo matching. We show how to
integrate them into a unified BDfF-Net to obtain high-quality depth maps.
Comprehensive experiments show that our approach outperforms the
state-of-the-art in both accuracy and speed and effectively emulates human
vision systems
Assessing the impacts of climate change on marine fisheries of Karnataka and identifying regime shifts
Climate related regime shifts, namely the rapid reorganization of marine ecosystems from one relatively stable state to another, have been reported from several parts of the world, and found responsible for the fluctuations of major fisheries. Time series on ocean-atmosphere parameters together with time series on plankton and/or fish abundance has been extensively used for identifying regime shifts in the oceans from several parts of the globe
Sub-micron, Metal Gate, High-к Dielectric, Implant-free, Enhancement-mode III-V MOSFETs
The performance of 300nm, 500nm and 1μm metal gate, implant free, enhancement mode III-V MOSFETs are reported. Devices are realised using a 10nm MBE grown Ga2O3/(GaxGd1-x)2O3 high-κ (κ=20) dielectric stack grown upon a δ-doped AlGaAs/InGaAs/AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Enhancement mode operation is maintained across the three reported gate lengths with a reduction in threshold voltage from 0.26 V to 0.08 V as the gate dimension is reduced from 1 μm to 300 nm. An increase in transconductance is also observed with reduced gate dimension. Maximum drain current of 420 μA/μm and extrinsic transconductance of 400 µS/µm are obtained from these devices. Gate leakage current of less than 100pA and subthreshold slope of 90 mV/decade were obtained for all gate lengths. These are believed to be the highest performance submicron enhancement mode III-V MOSFETs reported to date
Diffusion Tensor Imaging Evaluation of Corticospinal Tract Hyperintensity in Upper Motor Neuron-Predominant ALS Patients
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with predominant upper motor neuron (UMN) signs occasionally have hyperintensity of corticospinal tract (CST) on T2- and proton-density-(PD-) weighted brain images. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was used to assess whether diffusion parameters along intracranial CST differ in presence or absence of hyperintensity and correspond to UMN dysfunction.
DTI brain scans were acquired in 47 UMN-predominant ALS patients with (n = 21) or without (n = 26) CST hyperintensity and in 10 control subjects. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) were measured in four regions of interests (ROIs) along CST. Abnormalities (P < 0.05) were observed in FA, AD, or RD in CST primarily at internal capsule (IC) level in ALS patients, especially those with CST hyperintensity. Clinical measures corresponded well with DTI changes at IC level. The IC abnormalities suggest a prominent axonopathy in UMN-predominant ALS and that tissue changes underlying CST hyperintensity have specific DTI changes, suggestive of unique axonal pathology
Late Quaternary sea level and environmental changes from relic carbonate deposits of the Western margin of India
Relic carbonate deposits along the western margin of India occur as dolomite crusts, aragonite sands
(pelletal/oolitic) and aragonite-cemented limestones, oyster shells, corals, encrusted coralline algal and foraminiferal-dominated nodules. The petrology and mineralogy of the deposits indicate that except for aragonite sands and foraminiferal nodules, the others were formed in shallow marine conditions and serve as sea level indicators. Radiocarbon dates were measured for 62 relic deposits covering the entire margin. The age of these deposits on the continental shelf off Cape Comorin and Mangalore, between 110 and 18 m depth, ranges between 12, 610 14C yr BP and 6,390 14C yr BP. On the northwestern margin of India, especially on the carbonate platform (between 64 and 100 m), the age ranges from 17,250 to 6,73014C yr BP. The relic deposits of the Gulf of Kachchh at depths between 35 and 25 m are dated at 12,550-9,63014C yr BP. The age vs. depth plot of the relic deposits further indicates that the Gulf of Kachchh was inundated much early, atleast by 15 ka, after the Last Glacial Maximum, and was subjected to uplift and subsidence during the Holocene. The carbonate platform subsided during the early Holocene. Some of the relic deposits between Cape Comorin and Mangalore plot on or, closely follow the glacio-eustatic sea level curve. Despite abundant siliciclastic flux discharged by the Narmada and Tapti during the early Holocene, the platform off these rivers is largely devoid of this flux and carbonate sedimentation continued until 6,700 14C yr BP. We suggest that the river-derived sediment flux diverted southwards under the influence of the SW monsoon current and, thereby, increased the turbidity on the shelf and slope southeast of the carbonate platform and facilitated the formation of deeper water foraminiferal nodules off Vengurla-Goa
Mixed axion/neutralino cold dark matter in supersymmetric models
We consider supersymmetric (SUSY) models wherein the strong CP problem is
solved by the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism with a concommitant axion/axino
supermultiplet. We examine R-parity conserving models where the neutralino is
the lightest SUSY particle, so that a mixture of neutralinos and axions serve
as cold dark matter. The mixed axion/neutralino CDM scenario can match the
measured dark matter abundance for SUSY models which typically give too low a
value of the usual thermal neutralino abundance, such as models with wino-like
or higgsino-like dark matter. The usual thermal neutralino abundance can be
greatly enhanced by the decay of thermally-produced axinos to neutralinos,
followed by neutralino re-annihilation at temperatures much lower than
freeze-out. In this case, the relic density is usually neutralino dominated,
and goes as \sim (f_a/N)/m_{axino}^{3/2}. If axino decay occurs before
neutralino freeze-out, then instead the neutralino abundance can be augmented
by relic axions to match the measured abundance. Entropy production from
late-time axino decays can diminish the axion abundance, but ultimately not the
neutralino abundance. In mixed axion/neutralino CDM models, it may be possible
to detect both a WIMP and an axion as dark matter relics. We also discuss
possible modifications of our results due to production and decay of saxions.
In the appendices, we present expressions for the Hubble expansion rate and the
axion and neutralino relic densities in radiation, matter and decaying-particle
dominated universes.Comment: 31 pages including 21 figure
Analysis of chaotic motion and its shape dependence in a generalized piecewise linear map
We analyse the chaotic motion and its shape dependence in a piecewise linear
map using Fujisaka's characteristic function method. The map is a
generalization of the one introduced by R. Artuso. Exact expressions for
diffusion coefficient are obtained giving previously obtained results as
special cases. Fluctuation spectrum relating to probability density function is
obtained in a parametric form. We also give limiting forms of the above
quantities. Dependence of diffusion coefficient and probability density
function on the shape of the map is examined.Comment: 4 pages,4 figure
