To develop behavioral tests of vestibular functioning in the Wistar rat
Two tests of vestibular functioning in the rat were developed. The first test was the water maze. In the water maze the rat does not have the normal proprioceptive feedback from its limbs to help it maintain its orientation, and must rely primarily on the sensory input from its visual and vestibular systems. By altering lighting conditions and visual cues the vestibular functioning without visual cues was assessed. Whether there was visual compensation for some vestibular dysfunction was determined. The second test measured vestibular functioning of the rat's behavior on a parallel swing. In this test the rat's postural adjustments while swinging on the swing with the otoliths being stimulated were assessed. Less success was achieved in developing the parallel swing as a test of vestibular functioning than with the water maze. On the Contractivity of Hilbert-Schmidt distance under open system dynamics
We show that the Hilbert-Schmidt distance, unlike the trace distance, between
quantum states is generally not monotonic for open quantum systems subject to
Lindblad semigroup dynamics. Sufficient conditions for contractivity of the
Hilbert-Schmidt norm in terms of the dissipation generators are given. Although
these conditions are not necessary, simulations suggest that non-contractivity
is the typical case, i.e., that systems for which the Hilbert-Schmidt distance
between quantum states is monotonically decreasing form only a small set of all
possible dissipative systems for N>2, in contrast to the case N=2 where the

Schmidt Analysis of Pure-State Entanglement
We examine the application of Schmidt-mode analysis to pure state
entanglement. Several examples permitting exact analytic calculation of Schmidt

A New Look at the Axial Anomaly in Lattice QED with Wilson Fermions
By carrying out a systematic expansion of Feynman integrals in the lattice
spacing, we show that the axial anomaly in the U(1) lattice gauge theory with
Wilson fermions, as determined in one-loop order from an irrelevant lattice
operator in the Ward identity, must necessarily be identical to that computed
from the dimensionally regulated continuum Feynman integrals for the triangle

Finite-Time Disentanglement via Spontaneous Emission
We show that under the influence of pure vacuum noise two entangled qubits
become completely disentangled in a finite time, and in a specific example we
find the time to be given by times the

Thermal entanglement of spins in a nonuniform magnetic field
We study the effect of inhomogeneities in the magnetic field on the thermal
entanglement of a two spin system. We show that in the ferromagnetic case a
very small inhomogeneity is capable to produce large values of thermal
entanglement. This shows that the absence of entanglement in the ferromagnetic
Heisenberg system is highly unstable against inhomogeneoity of magnetic fields

Least squares surface approximation to scattered data using multiquadric functions
This report documents an investigation into some methods for fitting surfaces to scattered data. The form of the fitting function is a multiquadric function with the criteria for the fit being the least mean squared resifual for the data points. The principal problem is the selection of knot points (or base points for the multiquadric basis functions), although the selection of the multiquadric parameter also plays a nontrivial role in the process. We first describe a greedy algorithm for knot selection, and this procedure is used as an initial step in what follows. The minimization including knot locations and multiquadric parameter is explored, with some unexpected results in terms of 'near repeated' knots. This phenomenon is explored, and leads us to consider variable parameter values for the basis functions. Colchicine-Doubling of Germinating Seedlings of Interspecific Wildrye Hybrids
Colchicine has usually been applied to sterile clones of interspecific grass hybrids to restore fertility. However, when hybrids are partially fertile, colchicine can be applied to germinating seedlings. Four populations of Basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) X beardless wildrye (L. triticoides) were treated with a 0.2% colchicine solution to double chromosome number from 4x=28 to 8x=56. Doubling percentage was 28, 33, 42, and 44% of all root-tips examined for the four populations. When plants without doubled sectors were discarded, doubling percentage increased to 56, 68, 78, and 78%. Plants with doubled sectors have been placed in crossing blocks to generate octoploid progeny. Octoploids identified through root-tip chromosome counts will be intercrossed to generate 8x populations
Godspeed: Counselor Education Doctoral Student Experiences From Diverse Religious and Spiritual Backgrounds
Amidst growing literature regarding the importance of spirituality within counseling and counselor education, little is known of the experiences of doctoral students regarding their religious and spiritual backgrounds while matriculating through their doctoral program. This research explored the experiences of four researcher-participant counselor education doctoral students from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds. This exploration deepened their understanding of the role their religious and spiritual identities played in their thoughts, emotions, challenges, and strengths of their experiences. A phenomenological autoethnography method was used for this study. A unique data analysis procedure was developed called Integrative Group Process Phenomenology (IGPP), which was used to analyze journal and music data. The overarching experience was described as a journey with four primary categories of themes identified: painful experiences, learning and awareness, velocity (i.e., themes descriptive of movement and action), and connect versus disconnect. This research brought to light the challenges that counselor education doctoral students may encounter in their training, while highlighting the strength and resilience that religion and spirituality may offer. Recommendations, limitations, and implications for the counseling profession are offered to further the development of research regarding religious and spiritual experiences. © 2018: Alyse M.
