    Lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decays in seesaw models: new discussions

    The lepton flavor violating decay of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson (LFVHD), h->\mu\tau, is discussed in seesaw models at the one-loop level. Based on particular analytic expressions of Passarino-Veltman functions, the two unitary and 't Hooft Feynman gauges are used to compute the branching ratio of LFVHD and compare with results reported recently. In the minimal seesaw (MSS) model, the branching ratio was investigated in the whole valid range 10^{-9}-10^{15} GeV of new neutrino mass scale m_{n_6}. Using the Casas-Ibarra parameterization, this branching ratio enhances with large and increasing m_{n_6}. But the maximal value can reach only order of 10^{-11}. Interesting relations of LFVHD predicted by the MSS and inverse seesaw (ISS) model are discussed. The ratio between two LFVHD branching ratios predicted by the ISS and MSS is simply m^2_{n_6}\mu^{-2}_X, where \mu_X is the small neutrino mass scale in the ISS.     Local anaesthetic bupivacaine induced ovarian and prostate cancer apoptotic cell death and underlying mechanisms in vitro

    Retrospective studies indicate that the use of regional anesthesia can reduce cancer recurrence after surgery which could be due to ranging from immune function preservation to direct molecular mechanisms. This study was to investigate the effects of bupivacaine on ovarian and prostate cancer cell biology and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Cell viability, proliferation and migration of ovarian carcinoma (SKOV-3) and prostate carcinoma (PC-3) were examined following treatment with bupivacaine. Cleaved caspase 3, 8 and 9, and GSK-3β, pGSK-3β(tyr216) and pGSK-3β(ser9) expression were assessed by immunofluorescence. FAS ligand neutralization, caspase and GSK-3 inhibitors and GSK-3β siRNA were applied to further explore underlying mechanisms. Clinically relevant concentrations of bupivacaine reduced cell viability and inhibited cellular proliferation and migration in both cell lines. Caspase 8 and 9 inhibition generated partial cell death reversal in SKOV-3, whilst only caspase 9 was effective in PC-3. Bupivacaine increased the phosphorylation of GSK-3β(Tyr216) in SKOV-3 but without measurable effect in PC3. GSK-3β inhibition and siRNA gene knockdown decreased bupivacaine induced cell death in SKOV-3 but not in PC3. Our data suggests that bupivacaine has direct ‘anti-cancer’ properties through the activation of intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways in ovarian cancer but only the intrinsic pathway in prostate cancer

    Temperature driven structural phase transition for trapped ions and its experimental detection

    A Wigner crystal formed with trapped ion can undergo structural phase transition, which is determined only by the mechanical conditions on a classical level. Instead of this classical result, we show that through consideration of quantum and thermal fluctuation, a structural phase transition can be solely driven by change of the system's temperature. We determine a finite-temperature phase diagram for trapped ions using the renormalization group method and the path integral formalism, and propose an experimental scheme to observe the predicted temperature-driven structural phase transition, which is well within the reach of the current ion trap technology.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Dynamics of Overhauser Field under nuclear spin diffusion in a quantum dot

    The coherence of electron spin can be significantly enhanced by locking the Overhauser field from nuclear spins using the nuclear spin preparation. We propose a theoretical model to calculate the long time dynamics of the Overhauser field under intrinsic nuclear spin diffusion in a quantum dot. We obtain a simplified diffusion equation that can be numerically solved and show quantitatively how the Knight shift and the electron-mediated nuclear spin flip-flop affect the nuclear spin diffusion. The results explain several recent experimental observations, where the decay time of Overhauser field is measured under different configurations, including variation of the external magnetic field, the electron spin configuration in a double dot, and the initial nuclear spin polarization rate.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Effect of land use patterns on stability and distributions of organic carbon in the hilly region of Western Sichuan, China

    Soil aggregation is important for the resistance of land surfaces to erosion, and it influences the ability of soils to remain productive. At the same time, it is also an important process of carbon sequestration. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the effects of different land use patterns on soil aggregate stability and the distribution of organic carbon in different aggregate fractions in order to prove that the different land use patterns enhance soil aggregate stability. Five kinds of soil samples were collected from the hilly area of western Sichuan under different land use patterns, such as abandoned farmlands, eucalyptus plantations, Chinese fir plantations, tea plantations and loquat orchards. The results demonstrated that the five land use patterns had high proportions of aggregates at the size of >2 mm after dry sieving, and had high proportions of aggregates at the size of < 0.5 mm after wet sieving. The aggregation abilities of the soils were significantly different depending on land use patterns. Waterstable aggregate stability was highest in the Chinese fir plantations, followed by eucalyptus plantations and tea plantations. Water-stable aggregate stability was the lowest in loquat  orchards and abandoned farmlands. Except for coarse particle, soil particle contents of the same size were affected according to the different land use patterns. As the size of aggregates decreased, the organic carbon content of the soil aggregates in tea plantations increased after a decrease, and then reduced again. However, the organic carbon contents of soil aggregates in other land uses increased continuously with the decreasing size of aggregates. Organic carbon content of the soil aggregates was strongly increased in land areas that had been converted from abandoned farmland to Chinese fir plantations, tea plantations and loquat orchards, while it was decreased when abandoned farmland was converted to eucalyptus plantations.     Van der Waals epitaxy of Bi2Se3 on Si(111) vicinal surface: An approach to prepare high-quality thin films of topological insulator

    Epitaxial growth of topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films on nominally flat and vicinal Si(111) substrates is studied. In order to achieve planner growth front and better quality epifilms, a two-step growth method is adopted for the van der Waal epitaxy of Bi2Se3 to proceed. By employing vicinal Si(111) substrate surfaces, the in-pane growth rate anisotropy of Bi2Se3 is explored to achieve single crystalline Bi2Se3 epifilms, in which threading defects and twins are effectively suppressed. Optimization of the growth parameters has resulted in vicinal Bi2Se3 films showing a carrier mobility of ~ 2000 cm2V-1s-1 and the background doping of ~ 3 x 1018 cm-3 of the as-grown layers. Such samples not only show relatively high magnetoresistance but also a linear dependence on magnetic field.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Superconductivity up to 30 K in the vicinity of quantum critical point in BaFe2_{2}(As1−x_{1-x}Px_{x})2_{2}

    We report bulk superconductivity induced by an isovalent doping of phosphorus in BaFe2_{2}(As1−x_{1-x}Px_{x})2_{2}. The P-for-As substitution results in shrinkage of lattice, especially for the FeAs block layers. The resistivity anomaly associated with the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the undoped compound is gradually suppressed by the P doping. Superconductivity with the maximum TcT_c of 30 K emerges at xx=0.32, coinciding with a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) which is evidenced by the disappearance of SDW order and the linear temperature-dependent resistivity in the normal state. The TcT_c values were found to decrease with further P doping, and no superconductivity was observed down to 2 K for x≥x\geq 0.77. The appearance of superconductivity in the vicinity of QCP hints to the superconductivity mechanism in iron-based arsenides.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; more data; to appear in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte

    Influence of seed aerosol surface area and oxidation rate on vapor wall deposition and SOA mass yields: a case study with α-pinene ozonolysis

    Laboratory chambers, invaluable in atmospheric chemistry and aerosol formation studies, are subject to particle and vapor wall deposition, processes that need to be accounted for in order to accurately determine secondary organic aerosol (SOA) mass yields. Although particle wall deposition is reasonably well understood and usually accounted for, vapor wall deposition is less so. The effects of vapor wall deposition on SOA mass yields in chamber experiments can be constrained experimentally by increasing the seed aerosol surface area to promote the preferential condensation of SOA-forming vapors onto seed aerosol. Here, we study the influence of seed aerosol surface area and oxidation rate on SOA formation in α-pinene ozonolysis. The observations are analyzed using a coupled vapor–particle dynamics model to interpret the roles of gas–particle partitioning (quasi-equilibrium vs. kinetically limited SOA growth) and α-pinene oxidation rate in influencing vapor wall deposition. We find that the SOA growth rate and mass yields are independent of seed surface area within the range of seed surface area concentrations used in this study. This behavior arises when the condensation of SOA-forming vapors is dominated by quasi-equilibrium growth. Faster α-pinene oxidation rates and higher SOA mass yields are observed at increasing O3 concentrations for the same initial α-pinene concentration. When the α-pinene oxidation rate increases relative to vapor wall deposition, rapidly produced SOA-forming oxidation products condense more readily onto seed aerosol particles, resulting in higher SOA mass yields. Our results indicate that the extent to which vapor wall deposition affects SOA mass yields depends on the particular volatility organic compound system and can be mitigated through the use of excess oxidant concentrations

    Pragmatic Ontology Evolution: Reconciling User Requirements and Application Performance

    Increasingly, organizations are adopting ontologies to describe their large catalogues of items. These ontologies need to evolve regularly in response to changes in the domain and the emergence of new requirements. An important step of this process is the selection of candidate concepts to include in the new version of the ontology. This operation needs to take into account a variety of factors and in particular reconcile user requirements and application performance. Current ontology evolution methods focus either on ranking concepts according to their relevance or on preserving compatibility with existing applications. However, they do not take in consideration the impact of the ontology evolution process on the performance of computational tasks – e.g., in this work we focus on instance tagging, similarity computation, generation of recommendations, and data clustering. In this paper, we propose the Pragmatic Ontology Evolution (POE) framework, a novel approach for selecting from a group of candidates a set of concepts able to produce a new version of a given ontology that i) is consistent with the a set of user requirements (e.g., max number of concepts in the ontology), ii) is parametrised with respect to a number of dimensions (e.g., topological considerations), and iii) effectively supports relevant computational tasks. Our approach also supports users in navigating the space of possible solutions by showing how certain choices, such as limiting the number of concepts or privileging trendy concepts rather than historical ones, would reflect on the application performance. An evaluation of POE on the real-world scenario of the evolving Springer Nature taxonomy for editorial classification yielded excellent results, demonstrating a significant improvement over alternative approaches
