    Magnetic aftereffect in rare earth-iron-boron magnets

    The temperature dependences of the aftereffect coefficient Sv and the coercive force iHc have been measured from 4.2K to 300K on two specimens prepared from sintered magnets of Pr8Y7Fe77B8(sintered at 1060°C and 1100°C). The latter has higher maximum energy products. The Sv values of both have a maximum at 60K and 150K respectively. This is a new behavior which can not be explained by any theory proposed until now. </p

    Electrical coupling of neuro-ommatidial photoreceptor cells in the blowfly

    A new method of microstimulation of the blowfly eye using corneal neutralization was applied to the 6 peripheral photoreceptor cells (R1-R6) connected to one neuro-ommatidium (and thus looking into the same direction), whilst the receptor potential of a dark-adapted photoreceptor cell was recorded by means of an intracellular microelectrode. Stimulation of the photoreceptor cells not impaled elicited responses in the recorded cell of about 20% of the response elicited when stimulating the recorded cell. This is probably caused by gap junctions recently found between the axon terminals of these cells. Stimulation of all 6 cells together yielded responses that were larger and longer than those obtained with stimulation of just the recorded cell, and intensity-response curves that deviated more strongly from linearity. Evidence is presented that the resistance of the axon terminal of the photoreceptor cells quickly drops in response to a light flash, depending on the light intensity. Incorporating the cable properties of the cell body and the axon, the resistance of the gap junctions, and the (adapting) terminal resistance, a theoretical model is presented that explains the measurements well. Finally, it is argued that the gap junctions between the photoreceptor cells may effectively uncouple the synaptic responses of the cells by counteracting the influence of field potentials.

    The SSS phase of RS Ophiuchi observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton I.: Data and preliminary Modeling

    The phase of Super-Soft-Source (SSS) emission of the sixth recorded outburst of the recurrent nova RS Oph was observed twice with Chandra and once with XMM-Newton. The observations were taken on days 39.7, 54.0, and 66.9 after outburst. We confirm a 35-sec period on day 54.0 and found that it originates from the SSS emission and not from the shock. We discus the bound-free absorption by neutral elements in the line of sight, resonance absorption lines plus self-absorbed emission line components, collisionally excited emission lines from the shock, He-like intersystem lines, and spectral changes during an episode of high-amplitude variability. We find a decrease of the oxygen K-shell absorption edge that can be explained by photoionization of oxygen. The absorption component has average velocities of -1286+-267 km/s on day 39.7 and of -771+-65 km/s on day 66.9. The wavelengths of the emission line components are consistent with their rest wavelengths as confirmed by measurements of non-self absorbed He-like intersystem lines. We have evidence that these lines originate from the shock rather than the outer layers of the outflow and may be photoexcited in addition to collisional excitations. We found collisionally excited emission lines that are fading at wavelengths shorter than 15A that originate from the radiatively cooling shock. On day 39.5 we find a systematic blue shift of -526+-114 km/s from these lines. We found anomalous He-like f/i ratios which indicates either high densities or significant UV radiation near the plasma where the emission lines are formed. During the phase of strong variability the spectral hardness light curve overlies the total light curve when shifted by 1000sec. This can be explained by photoionization of neutral oxygen in the line of sight if the densities of order 10^{10}-10^{11} cm^{-3}.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables.     Oral malignancy is rare in chimpanzees. A 34-year-old female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) at Kumamoto Sanctuary, Japan, had developed it. Treatment is technically difficult for chimpanzees while malignant neoplasm is seemingly rising in captive populations. Widespread expert discussion, guidelines for treatment, especially for great apes in terminal stages is urgently needed

    Effect of surface functionalization on the moisture stability and sorption properties of porous boron nitride

    Porous boron nitride (BN) is a promising adsorbent owing to its high surface area and porosity, as well as thermal and oxidative stability. It has been explored in the past decade for applications in gas and liquid separations, such as CO2 capture and water cleaning. However, the material has displayed hydrolytic instability. Owing to the presence of moisture in most industrial settings, whether it is for storage or cyclic adsorption processes, ensuring the moisture stability of an adsorbent is crucial. While this topic has been researched for other adsorbents such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), little is known on controlling the hydrolytic stability of porous BN. In this study, we propose a method to enhance porous BN's hydrolytic stability via surface functionalization using a fluoroalkylsilane. We explored two different routes of functionalization: (i) functionalization of porous BN powder followed by pelletization (route 1) and (ii) coating of porous BN pellets with fluoroalkylsilane (route 2). Spectroscopic, analytical and imaging techniques confirmed the functionalization process qualitatively and quantitatively. We subjected the functionalized samples to moisture exposure at 54% RH (similar to common storage conditions) and 92% RH (similar to flue gas stream conditions with high moisture content), and characterized them to probe their resistance to moisture. We also investigated their equilibrium and kinetic sorption properties in the context of CO2/N2 separation. Both routes produced materials with enhanced moisture stability. However, we noted differences between both functionalization routes. Route 2 produced a sample with a higher grafting yield and hydrophobic nature, and therefore better resistance to moisture exposure than route 1. From a sorption point of view, despite reduced porosity, the functionalized samples maintain reasonable CO2 uptakes. The functionalization led to changes in the textural features of the samples, which caused differences in the mass transfer.     Subthreshold rho^0 photoproduction on 3He

    A large reduction of the rho^0 mass in the nuclear medium is reported, inferred from dipion photoproduction spectra in the 1 GeV region, for the reaction 3He(gamma,pi+ pi-)X with a 10% duty factor tagged-photon beam and the TAGX multi-particle spectrometer. The energy range covered (800 < E(gamma) < 1120 MeV) lies mostly below the free rho^0 production threshold, a region which is believed sensitive to modifications of light vector-meson properties at nuclear-matter densities. The rho^0 masses extracted from the MC fitting of the data, m*(rho^0) = 642 +/- 40, 669 +/- 32, and 682 +/- 56 MeV/c^2 for E(gamma) in the 800-880, 880-960, and 960-1040 MeV regions respectively, are independently corroborated by a measured, assumption-free, kinematical observable. This mass shift, far exceeding current mean-field driven theoretical predictions, may be suggestive of rho^0 decay within the range of the nucleonic field.Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys.
