    Collider Phenomenology with Split-UED

    We investigate the collider implications of Split Universal Extra Dimensions. The non-vanishing fermion mass in the bulk, which is consistent with the KK-parity, largely modifies the phenomenology of Minimal Universal Exta Dimensions. We scrutinize the behavior of couplings and study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for level-2 Kaluza-Klein modes in the dilepton channel, which would indicates the presence of the extra dimensions. Observation of large event rates for dilepton resonances can result from a nontrivial fermion mass profile along the extra dimensions, which, in turn, may corroborate extra dimensional explanation for the observation of the positron excess in cosmic rays.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figure

    Study of The Influence of Bulk Properties and Surface Tension on the Deposition Process of Calcium Phosphate on Modified Stainless Steel

    In order to reduce the fouling caused by milk during heat treatment, it is important to know more about the deposition process of calcium phosphate, one of the main components of milk fouling, on stainless steel surfaces. The fouling behaviour of calcium phosphate is controlled by several factors related to both the fouling solution properties and the surface characteristics. The present work is focused on the influence of two of these factors: 1) the size and size distribution of the calcium phosphate aggregates formed in solution upon heating and 2) the surface tension values of the deposition surface. It was possible to conclude that maximum deposit build up occurs at the temperature corresponding to the formation, in the bulk, of amorphous sphere-like calcium phosphate particles of about 0.1mm diameter and considering the surface effect, the maximum deposition is obtained on those surfaces having higher surface tension values

    FLOW CELL STUDIES ON FOULING CAUSED BY PROTEIN -CALCIUM PHOSPHATE DEPOSITION IN TURBULENT FLOW

    A comparative study of the calcium phosphate fouling process, with and without proteins, was carried out using both standard 316 2R stainless steel and 2R surfaces modified by TiN magnetron sputtering. Fouling behavior was assessed in a heat transfer flow cell operating in the turbulent flow regime. The fouling curves resulting from calcium phosphate deposition in the absence of proteins were substantially different from the ones obtained when protein was present. In this last case, two different fouling periods could be observed. The surface energy of the modified materials was found to affect the deposition parameters (rate of deposition and final amount of deposit) leading to higher amounts of deposit on higher energy surfaces in the absence of protein, while leading to less deposit in its presence. The standard 316 2R substrate proved to be less prone to fouling from protein-calcium phosphate solutions than the TiN modified surfaces. However, the same conclusion could not be drawn for calcium phosphate solutions

    Collider Signatures of the N=3 Lee-Wick Standard Model

    Inspired by the Lee-Wick higher-derivative approach to quantum field theory, Grinstein, O'Connell, and Wise have illustrated the utility of introducing into the Standard Model negative-norm states that cancel quadratic divergences in loop diagrams, thus posing a potential resolution of the hierarchy problem. Subsequent work has shown that consistency with electroweak precision parameters requires many of the partner states to be too massive to be detected at the LHC. We consider the phenomenology of a yet-higher derivative theory that exhibits three poles in its bare propagators (hence N=3), whose states alternate in norm. We examine the interference effects of W boson partners on LHC scattering cross sections, and find that the N=3 LWSM already makes verifiable predictions at 10 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity.Comment: 15 pages, 4 PDF figures.     Searching for Lee-Wick Gauge Bosons at the LHC

    In an extension of the Standard Model(SM) based on the ideas of Lee and Wick, Grinstein, O'Connell and Wise have found an interesting way to remove the usual quadratically divergent contributions to the Higgs mass induced by radiative corrections. Phenomenologically, the model predicts the existence of Terascale, negative-norm copies of the usual SM fields with rather unique properties: ghost-like propagators and negative decay widths, but with otherwise SM-like couplings. The model is both unitary and causal on macroscopic scales. In this paper we examine whether or not such states with these unusual properties can be uniquely identified as such at the LHC. We find that in the extended strong and electroweak gauge boson sector of the model, which is the simplest one to analyze, such an identification can be rather difficult. Observation of heavy gluon-like resonances in the dijet channel offers the best hope for this identification.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figs; discussion adde

    Off-the-Wall Higgs in the Universal Randall-Sundrum Model

    We outline a consistent Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework in which a fundamental 5-dimensional Higgs doublet induces electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). In this framework of a warped Universal Extra Dimension, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode of the bulk Higgs is tachyonic leading to a vacuum expectation value (vev) at the TeV scale. The consistency of this picture imposes a set of constraints on the parameters in the Higgs sector. A novel feature of our scenario is the emergence of an adjustable bulk profile for the Higgs vev. We also find a tower of non-tachyonic Higgs KK modes at the weak scale. We consider an interesting implementation of this ``Off-the-Wall Higgs'' mechanism where the 5-dimensional curvature-scalar coupling alone generates the tachyonic mode responsible for EWSB. In this case, additional relations among the parameters of the Higgs and gravitational sectors are established. We discuss the experimental signatures of the bulk Higgs in general, and those of the ``Gravity-Induced'' EWSB in particular.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figure

    Lorentz Violation in Extra Dimensions

    In theories with extra dimensions it is well known that the Lorentz invariance of the D=4+nD=4+n-dimensional spacetime is lost due to the compactified nature of the nn dimensions leaving invariance only in 4d. In such theories other sources of Lorentz violation may exist associated with the physics that initiated the compactification process at high scales. Here we consider the possibility of capturing some of this physics by analyzing the higher dimensional analog of the model of Colladay and Kostelecky. In that scenario a complete set of Lorentz violating operators arising from spontaneous Lorentz violation, that are not obviously Planck-scale suppressed, are added to the Standard Model action. Here we consider the influence of the analogous set of operators which break Lorentz invariance in 5d within the Universal Extra Dimensions picture. We show that such operators can greatly alter the anticipated Kaluza-Klein(KK) spectra, induce electroweak symmetry breaking at a scale related to the inverse compactification radius, yield sources of parity violation in, e.g., 4d QED/QCD and result in significant violations of KK-parity conservation produced by fermion Yukawa couplings, thus destabilizing the lightest KK particle.     Este trabalho tem como objetivo relatar um caso de isolamento em cultura pura de Histophilus somni em secreção vaginal de uma fêmea ovina da raça Texel, em propriedade localizada no estado de São Paulo, a qual apresentou histórico de endometrite e infertilidade. No exame clínico específico do aparelho genital, foi observada na vagina secreção de coloração esbranquiçada, com aspecto mucoso e odor fétido. Os exames sorológicos para Brucella ovis, Leptospirose e Neospora caninum resultaram negativos, enquanto o exame para Toxoplasma gondii foi positivo.The aim of this work is make one case report on Histophilus somni isolation on vaginal discharge from a Texel breed sheep on a farm on São Paulo, Brazil. The animal presented endometritis and infertility, it had white, mucous and fetid vaginal discharge. Laboratorial examinations resulted in Bucella ovis, Leptospirosis and Neospora caninum negative serology, and the animal was serum reactive to Toxoplasma gondii.À FAPESP, pelo apoio financeiro ao projeto registrado como Processo n° 02385-6
