    Band Mapping in One-Step Photoemission Theory: Multi-Bloch-Wave Structure of Final States and Interference Effects

    A novel Bloch-waves based one-step theory of photoemission is developed within the augmented plane wave formalism. Implications of multi-Bloch-wave structure of photoelectron final states for band mapping are established. Interference between Bloch components of initial and final states leads to prominent spectral features with characteristic frequency dispersion experimentally observed in VSe_2 and TiTe_2. Interference effects together with a non-free-electron nature of final states strongly limit the applicability of the common direct transitions band mapping approach, making the tool of one-step analysis indispensable.Comment: 4 jpg figure

    Property-Based Testing - The ProTest Project

    The ProTest project is an FP7 STREP on property based testing. The purpose of the project is to develop software engineering approaches to improve reliability of service-oriented networks; support fault-finding and diagnosis based on specified properties of the system. And to do so we will build automated tools that will generate and run tests, monitor execution at run-time, and log events for analysis. The Erlang / Open Telecom Platform has been chosen as our initial implementation vehicle due to its robustness and reliability within the telecoms sector. It is noted for its success in the ATM telecoms switches by Ericsson, one of the project partners, as well as for multiple other uses such as in facebook, yahoo etc. In this paper we provide an overview of the project goals, as well as detailing initial progress in developing property based testing techniques and tools for the concurrent functional programming language Erlang

    Raman and fluorescence contributions to resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering on LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 heterostructures

    We present a detailed study of the Ti 3dd carriers at the interface of LaAlO3_3/SrTiO3_3 heterostructures by high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS), with special focus on the roles of overlayer thickness and oxygen vacancies. Our measurements show the existence of interfacial Ti 3dd electrons already below the critical thickness for conductivity and an increase of the total interface charge up to a LaAlO3_3 overlayer thickness of 6 unit cells before it levels out. By comparing stoichiometric and oxygen deficient samples we observe strong Ti 3dd charge carrier doping by oxygen vacancies. The RIXS data combined with photoelectron spectroscopy and transport measurements indicate the simultaneous presence of localized and itinerant charge carriers. However, it is demonstrated that the relative amount of localized and itinerant Ti 3d3d electrons in the ground state cannot be deduced from the relative intensities of the Raman and fluorescence peaks in excitation energy dependent RIXS measurements, in contrast to previous interpretations. Rather, we attribute the observation of either the Raman or the fluorescence signal to the spatial extension of the intermediate state reached in the RIXS excitation process.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    We present an unbiased method for measuring the relative quality of different solutions to a programming problem. Our method is based on identifying possible bugs from program behaviour through black-box testing. The main motivation for such a method is its use in experimental evaluation of software development methods. We report on the use of our method in a small-scale such experiment, which was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of property-based testing vs. unit testing in software development.     Inhibition of Factor XIa by Antithrombin I11

    The inactivation of human factor XIa by human antithrombin III was studied under pseudo-first-order reaction conditions (excess antithrombin III) both in the absence and in the presence of heparin. The time course of inhibition was followed by using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. After electrophoresis, proteins were blotted onto nitrocellulose and stained either for glycoprotein or for antithrombin III using antibodies against antithrombin III. Concomitant with factor XIa inactivation, two new slower migrating bands, one of which represented the intermediate complex consisting of one antithrombin III complexed with factor XIa, appeared as a transient band. Complete inactivation resulted in a single band representing the complex of factor XIa with two antithrombin III molecules. Quantitative analysis of the time course of inactivation was accomplished by measurement of the disappearance of factor XIa amidolytic activity toward the chromogenic substrate S2366. Pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics were observed throughout. The rate constant of inactivation was found to be 10(3) M-1 s-1 in the absence of heparin and 26.7 X 10(3) M-1 s-1 in the presence of saturating amounts of heparin. From the kinetic data, a binding constant (Kd) of 0.14 microM was inferred for the binding of antithrombin III to heparin. The time course of inactivation and the distribution of the reaction products observed upon gel electrophoresis are best explained assuming a mechanism of inactivation in which the two active sites present in factor XIa are inhibited in random order (i.e., independent of each other) with the same rate constant of inhibition

    Generalized Spectral Signatures of Electron Fractionalization in Quasi-One and -Two Dimensional Molybdenum Bronzes and Superconducting Cuprates

    We establish the quasi-one-dimensional Li purple bronze as a photoemission paradigm of Luttinger liquid behavior. We also show that generalized signatures of electron fractionalization are present in the angle resolved photoemission spectra for quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes and certain cuprates. An important component of our analysis for the quasi-two-dimensional systems is the proposal of a ``melted holon'' scenario for the k-independent background that accompanies but does not interact with the peaks that disperse to define the Fermi surface.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Meizothrombin formation during factor Xa-catalyzed prothrombin activation:Formation in a purified system and in plasma

    Meizothrombin and thrombin formation were quantitated during factor Xa-catalyzed activation of human prothrombin in reaction systems containing purified proteins and in plasma. In the purified system considerable amounts of meizothrombin accumulated when prothrombin was activated by factor Xa (with or without accessory components) under initial steady state conditions. The ratio of the rates of meizothrombin and thrombin formation was not influenced by variation of the pH, temperature, or ionic strength of the reaction medium. When 2-mu-M prothrombin was activated by the complete prothrombinase complex (factor Xa, factor Va, Ca2+, and phospholipid) 80-90% of the initially formed reaction product was meizothrombin. Lowering the prothrombin concentration from 2 to 0.03-mu-M caused a gradual decrease in the ratio of meizothrombin/thrombin formation from 5 to 0.6. When the phosphatidylserine content of the phospholipid vesicles was varied between 20 and 1 mol% and prothrombin activation was analyzed at 2-mu-M prothrombin the relative amount of meizothrombin formed decreased from 85 to 55%. With platelets, cephalin, or thromboplastin as procoagulant lipid, thrombin was the major reaction product and only 30-40% of the activation product was meizothrombin. We also analyzed complete time courses of prothrombin activation both with purified proteins and in plasma. In reaction systems with purified proteins substantial amounts of meizothrombin accumulated under a wide variety of experimental conditions. However, little or no meizothrombin was detected in plasma in which coagulation was initiated via the extrinsic pathway with thromboplastin or via the intrinsic pathway with kaolin plus phospholipid (cephalin, platelets, or phosphatidylserine-containing vesicles). Thus, thrombin was the only active prothrombin activation product that accumulated during ex vivo coagulation experiments in plasma

    Direct k-space mapping of the electronic structure in an oxide-oxide interface

    The interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 hosts a two-dimensional electron system of itinerant carriers, although both oxides are band insulators. Interface ferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity has been found and attributed to local moments. Experimentally, it has been established that Ti 3d electrons are confined to the interface. Using soft x-ray angle-resolved resonant photoelectron spectroscopy we have directly mapped the interface states in k-space. Our data demonstrate a charge dichotomy. A mobile fraction contributes to Fermi surface sheets, whereas a localized portion at higher binding energies is tentatively attributed to electrons trapped by O-vacancies in the SrTiO3. While photovoltage effects in the polar LaAlO3 layers cannot be excluded, the apparent absence of surface-related Fermi surface sheets could also be fully reconciled in a recently proposed electronic reconstruction picture where the built-in potential in the LaAlO3 is compensated by surface O-vacancies serving also as charge reservoir.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, incl.
