Calculation of the microcanonical temperature for the classical Bose field

The ergodic hypothesis asserts that a classical mechanical system will in time visit every available configuration in phase space. Thus, for an ergodic system, an ensemble average of a thermodynamic quantity can equally well be calculated by a time average over a sufficiently long period of dynamical evolution. In this paper we describe in detail how to calculate the temperature and chemical potential from the dynamics of a microcanonical classical field, using the particular example of the classical modes of a Bose-condensed gas. The accurate determination of these thermodynamics quantities is essential in measuring the shift of the critical temperature of a Bose gas due to non-perturbative many-body effects.Comment: revtex4, 10 pages, 1 figure. v2: updated to published version. Exact Results for Three-Body Correlations in a Degenerate One-Dimensional Bose Gas

Motivated by recent experiments we derive an exact expression for the correlation function entering the three-body recombination rate for a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons. The answer, given in terms of two thermodynamic parameters of the Lieb-Liniger model, is valid for all values of the dimensionless coupling γ\gamma and contains the previously known results for the Bogoliubov and Tonks-Girardeau regimes as limiting cases. We also investigate finite-size effects by calculating the correlation function for small systems of 3, 4, 5 and 6 particles.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Adsorption and two-body recombination of atomic hydrogen on 3^3He-4^4He mixture films

We present the first systematic measurement of the binding energy EaE_a of hydrogen atoms to the surface of saturated 3^3He-4^4He mixture films. EaE_a is found to decrease almost linearly from 1.14(1) K down to 0.39(1) K, when the population of the ground surface state of 3^3He grows from zero to 6×10146\times10^{14} cm2^{-2}, yielding the value 1.2(1)×10151.2(1)\times 10^{-15} K cm2^2 for the mean-field parameter of H-3^3He interaction in 2D. The experiments were carried out with overall 3^3He concentrations ranging from 0.1 ppm to 5 % as well as with commercial and isotopically purified 4^4He at temperatures 70...400 mK. Measuring by ESR the rate constants KaaK_{aa} and KabK_{ab} for second-order recombination of hydrogen atoms in hyperfine states aa and bb we find the ratio Kab/KaaK_{ab}/K_{aa} to be independent of the 3^3He content and to grow with temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, all zipped in a sigle file. Self-similar structure and experimental signatures of suprathermal ion distribution in inertial confinement fusion implosions

    Get PDF
The distribution function of suprathermal ions is found to be self-similar under conditions relevant to inertial confinement fusion hot-spots. By utilizing this feature, interference between the hydro-instabilities and kinetic effects is for the first time assessed quantitatively to find that the instabilities substantially aggravate the fusion reactivity reduction. The ion tail depletion is also shown to lower the experimentally inferred ion temperature, a novel kinetic effect that may explain the discrepancy between the exploding pusher experiments and rad-hydro simulations and contribute to the observation that temperature inferred from DD reaction products is lower than from DT at National Ignition Facility.Comment: Revised version accepted for publication in PRL.

Interplay between Heavy Fermions and Crystal Field Excitation in Kondo Lattices. Low-Temperature Thermodynamics and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectra of CeNiSn

The microscopic theory of interaction between the heavy fermions and the crystal field excitations in Kondo lattices is presented. It is shown that the heavy-fermion spectrum scaled by the Kondo temperature TKT_K can be modified by the crystal field excitations with the energy ΔCF\Delta_{CF} provided the inequality ΔCF<TK\Delta_{CF}<T_K is realized. On the base of general description of excitation spectrum the detailed qualitative and quantitative explanation of anisotropic inelastic neutron scattering spectra and low-temperature specific heat of orthorhombic CeNiSn is given. The theory resolves the apparent contradiction between the metallic conductivity and the gap-wise behavior of thermodynamic properties and spin response of CeNiSn at low temperatures.Comment: 24 pages (LaTeX), 12 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

1mb{1\over m_b} and 1mt{1\over m_t} Expansion of the Weak Mixing Matrix

We perform a 1/mb1/m_b and 1/mt1/m_t expansion of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi- Maskawa mixing matrix. Data suggest that the dominant parts of the Yukawa couplings are factorizable into sets of numbers r>\vert r>, s>\vert s>, and s>\vert s'>, associated, respectively, with the left-handed doublets, the right-handed up singlets, and the right- handed down singlets. The first order expansion is consistent with Wolfenstein parameterization, which is an expansion in sinθcsin \theta _c to third order. The mixing matrix elements in the present approach are partitioned into factors determined by the relative orientations of r>\vert r>, s>\vert s>, and s>\vert s'> and the dynamics provided by the subdominant mass matrices. A short discussion is given of some experimental support and a generalized Fritzsch model is used to contrast our approach.Comment: A set of references has been added to ealier related wor

Properties of Foreshocks and Aftershocks of the Non-Conservative SOC Olami-Feder-Christensen Model: Triggered or Critical Earthquakes?

    Get PDF
Following Hergarten and Neugebauer [2002] who discovered aftershock and foreshock sequences in the Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) discrete block-spring earthquake model, we investigate to what degree the simple toppling mechanism of this model is sufficient to account for the properties of earthquake clustering in time and space. Our main finding is that synthetic catalogs generated by the OFC model share practically all properties of real seismicity at a qualitative level, with however significant quantitative differences. We find that OFC catalogs can be in large part described by the concept of triggered seismicity but the properties of foreshocks depend on the mainshock magnitude, in qualitative agreement with the critical earthquake model and in disagreement with simple models of triggered seismicity such as the Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model [Ogata, 1988]. Many other features of OFC catalogs can be reproduced with the ETAS model with a weaker clustering than real seismicity, i.e. for a very small average number of triggered earthquakes of first generation per mother-earthquake.Comment: revtex, 19 pages, 8 eps figure
