    Is Mislocalization during saccades related to the position of the saccade target within the image or to the gaze position at the end of the saccade?

    A stimulus that is flashed around the time of a saccade tends to be mislocalized in the direction of the saccade target. Our question is whether the mislocalization is related to the position of the saccade target within the image or to the gaze position at the end of the saccade. We separated the two with a visual illusion that influences the perceived distance to the target of the saccade and thus saccade endpoint without affecting the perceived position of the saccade target within the image. We asked participants to make horizontal saccades from the left to the right end of the shaft of a Müller-Lyer figure. Around the time of the saccade, we flashed a bar at one of five possible positions and asked participants to indicate its location by touching the screen. As expected, participants made shorter saccades along the fins-in (<->) configuration than along the fins-out (>-<) configuration of the figure. The illusion also influenced the mislocalization pattern during saccades, with flashes presented with the fins-out configuration being perceived beyond flashes presented with the fins-in configuration. The difference between the patterns of mislocalization for bars flashed during the saccade for the two configurations corresponded quantitatively with a prediction based on compression towards the saccade endpoint considering the magnitude of the effect of the illusion on saccade amplitude. We conclude that mislocalization is related to the eye position at the end of the saccade, rather than to the position of the saccade target within the image

    When observers are asked to localize the peripheral position of a small probe with respect to the mid-position of a spatially extended comparison stimulus, they tend to judge the probe as being more peripheral than the mid-position of the comparison stimulus. This relative mislocalization seems to emerge from differences in absolute localization, that is the comparison stimulus is localized more towards the fovea than the probe. The present study compared saccadic behaviour and relative localization judgements in three experiments and determined the quantitative relationship between both measures. The results showed corresponding effects in localization errors and saccadic behaviour. Moreover, it was possible to estimate the amount of the relative mislocalization by means of the saccadic amplitude

    Effect of saccadic adaptation on localization of visual targets

    Objects flashed briefly around the time of a saccadic eye movement are grossly mislocalized by human subjects, so they appear to be compressed toward the endpoint of the saccade. In this study, we investigate spatial localization during saccadic adaptation to examine whether the focus of compression tends toward the intended saccadic target or at the endpoint of the actual ( adapted) movement. We report two major results. First, that peri-saccadic focus of the compression did not occur at the site of the initial saccadic target, but tended toward the actual landing site of the saccade. Second, and more surprisingly, we observed a large long-term perceptual distortion of space, lasting for hundreds of milliseconds. This distortion did not occur over the whole visual field but was limited to a local region of visual space around the saccade target, suggesting that saccadic adaptation induces a visuo-topic remapping of space. The results imply that the mechanisms controlling saccadic adaptation also affect perception of space and point to a strong perceptual plasticity coordinated with the well-documented plasticity of the motor system
