Idiopathic intracranial hypertension in pregnancy: about a rare case

    Get PDF
In this work, study report the case of a 23-year-old primigravidae, in whom an idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), formerly called pseudotumor cerebri, was diagnosed in the first trimester with visual field impairment, the management of which was similar to cases of benign intracranial hypertension in the general population. The parturient put under medical treatment with ophthalmological and obstetrical follow-up until 39 weeks of amenorrhea where she was cesarized for rescue of the visual prognosis. The objective of this work is to elucidate this pathology, caused by a defect of reabsorption of the CSF by the arachnoid plexus. The diagnosis is retained after elimination by radio-biological exploration of an infectious, tumor or traumatic etiology. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension has no impact on the evolution of pregnancy. In addition, the choice of delivery route is dependent on the patient's visual prognosis being brought into play

Chemical analysis of the essential oils of three cistus species growing in North-West of Algeria

The study reports for the first time the chemical composition and the antibacterial activity of the essential oil hydrodistilled from three Cistaceae growing in Algeria: Cistus ladaniferus L., C. albidus L. and C. monspeliensis L. The oils were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS analyses. The major components of C. ladaniferus were 5-epi-7-epi-α-eudesmol (13.6%) and borneol (12.5%) whereas for C. albidus the main constituents were epi-α-bisabolol (11.4%) and β-bourbonene (8.7%). Epi-13-manoyl oxide (28.6%), kaur-16-ene (8.1%) and nonanal (5.4%) were the principal ones for C. monspeliensis. In vitro, antimicrobial activity of the oils was investigated against nine microorganisms by disk diffusion and agar dilution assays. The Gram-positive bacteria resulted sensitive to the three oils, especially Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The volatiles of C. monspeliensis showed the best activity compared with other oils, comparable to or better than Gentamicin, a conventional antibiotic used as positive control in this study. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of the oil was 0.25μg/L

Introduction: emergency physicians frequently encounter patients with thyroid disease. However, it is unusual for these thyroid disorders to create acute, life-threatening situations. Critical airway compression attributable to benign thyroid enlargement may occur suddenly and require urgent treatement.Aim: we recall making procedures in charge of a goiter in pregnant women.Case -report : We report a case of pregnant women who was admitted for compressive goiter with laryngeal dyspnea, which required emergency total thyroidectomy. Conclusion: Urgent thyroidectomy in pregnant women can be performed if we respect the precautions. Keywords: goiter, pregnancy, thyroidectomy

Patient perspectives of managing fatigue in ankylosing spondylitis, and views on potential interventions: a qualitative study

    Get PDF

Background: Fatigue is a major component of living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), though it has been largely over-looked, and currently there are no specific agreed management strategies.

Methods: This qualitative exploratory study involved participants who are members of an existing population-based ankylosing spondylitis (PAS) cohort. Participants residing in South West Wales were invited to participate in a focus group to discuss; (1) effects of fatigue, (2) self-management strategies and (3) potential future interventions. The focus groups were audio-recorded and the transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis.

Results: Participants consisted of 3 males/4 females (group 1) and 4 males/3 females (group 2), aged between 35 and 73 years (mean age 53 years). Three main themes were identified: (1) The effects of fatigue were multi-dimensional with participants expressing feelings of being ‘drained’ (physical), ‘upset’ (emotional) and experiencing ‘low-mood’ (psychological); (2) The most commonly reported self-management strategy for fatigue was a balanced combination of activity (exercise) and rest. Medication was reluctantly taken due to side-effects and worries over dependency; (3) Participants expressed a preference for psychological therapies rather than pharmacological for managing fatigue. Information on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was received with interest, with recommendations for delivery in a group format with the option of distance-based delivery for people who were not able to attend a group course.

Conclusions: Patients frequently try and manage their fatigue without any formal guidance or support. Our research indicates there is a need for future research to focus on psychological interventions to address the multi-faceted aspects of fatigue in AS.</p&gt

Fission and cluster decay of 76^{76}Sr nucleus in the ground-state and formed in heavy-ion reactions

    Get PDF
Calculations for fission and cluster decay of 76Sr^{76}Sr are presented for this nucleus to be in its ground-state or formed as an excited compound system in heavy-ion reactions. The predicted mass distribution, for the dynamical collective mass transfer process assumed for fission of 76Sr^{76}Sr, is clearly asymmetric, favouring α\alpha -nuclei. Cluster decay is studied within a preformed cluster model, both for ground-state to ground-state decays and from excited compound system to the ground-state(s) or excited states(s) of the fragments.Comment: 14 pages LaTeX, 5 Figures available upon request Submitted to Phys.
