    Time-and event-driven communication process for networked control systems: A survey

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.In recent years, theoretical and practical research topics on networked control systems (NCSs) have gained an increasing interest from many researchers in a variety of disciplines owing to the extensive applications of NCSs in practice. In particular, an urgent need has arisen to understand the effects of communication processes on system performances. Sampling and protocol are two fundamental aspects of a communication process which have attracted a great deal of research attention. Most research focus has been on the analysis and control of dynamical behaviors under certain sampling procedures and communication protocols. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis issues of NCSs with different sampling procedures (time-and event-driven sampling) and protocols (static and dynamic protocols). First, these sampling procedures and protocols are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds as well as dynamic natures. Then, the developments of the stabilization, control, and filtering problems are systematically reviewed and discussed in great detail.     Analysis of traffic noise distribution and influence factors in Chinese urban residential blocks.

    To improve the acoustic environment of residential blocks, noise mapping is employed in this study to analyze traffic noise distribution and the influence factors of four types of residential blocks in China. The study shows that high-rise small blocks have the highest average noise level (Lavg) for ground and building facades, followed by small low-rise blocks while modern residential blocks yield the lowest value. An analysis of the standard deviation (STD) of spatial statistical noise level (Ln) shows that the STD of the ground and building façade of two types of small blocks is higher than that of other blocks. The analysis of influence factors indicates that the lot area of residential block has significant negative correlation with ground and building facade average noise level (Lavg), and street coverage ratio (SCR) has significant positive correlation with ground and building facade average noise level (Lavg). In low-rise and high-rise small blocks, ground space index (GSI) has significant negative correlation with ground and building facade average noise level (Lavg); street interface density (SID) has significant positive correlation with the STDs of ground and building facade noise.     Directors’ and officers’ liability insurance and the cost of equity

    We examine whether directors׳ and officers׳ (D&O) liability insurance affects a firm’s cost of equity. We find a positive association between D&O insurance and the cost of equity. Information quality and risk-taking appear to be two underlying channels through which D&O insurance affects the cost of equity. Further tests suggest that this positive association is not due to optimal risk-taking, as evidenced by a negative market reaction to an increase in D&O insurance coverage, a lack of improvement in firms׳ cash flow and a low valuation associated with high D&O insurance. Overall, our evidence is consistent with the notion that D&O insurance weakens the disciplining effect of shareholder litigation, leading to an increase in the cost of equity.postprin

    A rapid cosmic-ray increase in BC 3372-3371 from ancient buried tree rings in China

    Cosmic rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere to produce 14^{14}C, which can be absorbed by trees. Therefore, rapid increases of 14^{14}C in tree rings can be used to probe previous cosmic-ray events. By this method, three 14^{14}C rapidly increasing events have been found. Plausible causes of these events include large solar proton events, supernovae or short gamma-ray bursts. However, due to the lack of measurements of 14^{14}C by year, the occurrence frequency of such 14^{14}C rapidly increasing events is poorly known. In addition, rapid increases may be hidden in the IntCal13 data with five-year resolution. Here we report the result of 14^{14}C measurements using an ancient buried tree during the period between BC 3388 and 3358. We find a rapid increase of about 9\textperthousand~ in the 14^{14}C content from BC 3372 to BC 3371.     Book synopsis: Haptic interfaces are divided into two main categories: force feedback and tactile. Force feedback interfaces are used to explore and modify remote/virtual objects in three physical dimensions in applications including computer-aided design, computer-assisted surgery, and computer-aided assembly. Tactile interfaces deal with surface properties such as roughness, smoothness, and temperature. Haptic research is intrinsically multi-disciplinary, incorporating computer science/engineering, control, robotics, psychophysics, and human motor control. By extending the scope of research in haptics, advances can be achieved in existing applications such as computer-aided design (CAD), tele-surgery, rehabilitation, scientific visualization, robot-assisted surgery, authentication, and graphical user interfaces (GUI), to name a few.     On the possibility of superconductivity in PrBa2Cu3O7

    Recent reports about observations of superconductivity in PrBa2Cu3O7 raise a number of questions: (i) of various theories striving to explain the Tc suppression in PrxY{1-x}Ba2Cu3O7, are there any compatible with possible superconductivity in stoichiometric PrBa2Cu3O7? (ii) if this superconductivity is not an experimental artifact, are the superconducting carriers (holes) of the same character as in the other high-Tc cuprates, or do they represent another electronic subsystem? (iii) is the underlying mechanism the same as in other high-Tc superconductors? I present an answer to the first two questions, while leaving the last one open.Comment: 4 pages 4 eps fig

    Comment on ``Superconducting PrBa_2Cu_3O_x''

    Recently, Zou et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1074, 1998) reported the observation of bulk superconductivity (SC) for a PrBa_2Cu_3O_x (Pr123) single crystal grown by the traveling-solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method. The aim of this Comment is to show the inconsistency of the value of effective magnetic moment \mu_{eff} reported by Zou et al. (2.92\mu_B) with their magnetic susceptibility data. The estimation made directly from their data points gives a considerably smaller value of \mu_{eff}=2.09\mu_B. At the same time the values of mu_{eff}=2.9\mu_B and 3.1\mu_B were obtained for our Pr123 single crystals grown by flux method for H||ab-plane and H||c-axis, respectively. This suggests that Pr occupies only about a half of the RE sites in TSFZ crystal. The other half of the RE sites is occupied most probably by the nonmagnetic Ba. Noteworthy, SC with T_c=43 K was observed earlier for Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y} thin films. Ba^{2+} has a larger ionic radius than Pr^{3+} and so the substitution of Ba for Pr could give a natural explanation not only for the SC in TSFZ Pr123 but also for the elongation of the distance between the CuO_2 planes observed by Zou et al.Comment: Slightly extended version of Comment accepted to Phys.
