    Strategic Compensation: Does Business Strategy Influence Compensation in High-Technology Firms?

    This study examined whether a firm\u27s business strategy influences the firm\u27s compensation systems in high-technology firms. For the firm strategy variable, we used innovation strategy, which is one of the most critical business strategies in the high-technology industry. Our analysis showed that a firm\u27s emphasis on innovation is positively related to the firm\u27s employee pay level, both short-term pay and long-term pay. Moreover, a firm\u27s emphasis on innovation has significant influence on several other aspects of employee compensation management. Innovation is positively associated with the difference in pay level between R&D employees and other employees, time orientation of employee compensation (the relative emphasis on long-term pay to short-term pay), and the length of the stock option vesting period.     Growth, movement, and attrition of northern bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, in the Pacific Ocean, as determined by tagging

    ENGLISH: The growth of northern bluefin tuna is described by a two-stanza model. For fish between 191 and 564 mm in length the Gompertz curve, with values of 581 mm and 4.32 for Loo and K (annual), respectively, is used. The fish between 564 and 1530 mm grow linearly, at the rate of 0.709 mm per day. Age-O fish tagged and released in the western Pacific Ocean have been recaptured in the western, central, and eastern Pacific. The minimum time between release in the western Pacific and recapture in the eastern Pacific is 215 days. Older fish, mostly Land 2-year olds, tagged and released in the eastern Pacific have been recaptured in the eastern and western Pacific. The minimum time between release in eastern Pacific and recapture in the western Pacific is 674 days. The coefficient of natural mortality is estimated from data on growth and ambient temperature to be 0.276 on an annual basis, with 90-percent confidence limits of 0.161 and 0.47L Spawning of northern bluefin takes place only in the western Pacific. Some of the juveniles migrate to the eastern Pacific, where they reside for several months to several years before returning to the western Pacific. The portion of fish which migrate to the eastern Pacific varies among years, and this appears to be an important cause of the annual variation in the catches in the eastern Pacific Ocean.     Organizational Pay Mix: The Implications of Various Theoretical Perspectives for the Conceptualization and Measurement of Individual Pay Components

    While pay mix is one of the most frequently used variables in recent compensation research, its theoretical relevance and measurement remains underdeveloped. There is little agreement among studies on the definitions of the various forms of pay that go into pay mix. Even studies that examine the same theories tend to overlook the implications of differences in the measures and meanings of pay mix used in other studies. Our study explores the meaning of pay mix using several theories commonly used in recent compensation research (agency, efficiency wage, expectancy, equity, and person-organization fit). Recent studies generally use a single measure of mix (e.g., bonus/base, or stock options/total, or benefits/base). We argue that to fully understand the effects of employee compensation, the multiple forms of compensation must be taken into account. Therefore, we derived pay mix measures from the theories commonly used in compensation research. We classified the pay mix policies of 478 firms using cluster-analytic techniques. We found that the classification of organizations based on their pay mix depends on the measures used. We suggest that as more realistic measures of pay mix leads to reinterpretation of compensation research and offers directions for theory development

    Plasmonic Enhancement of Emission from Si-nanocrystals

    Plasmonic gratings of different periodicities are fabricated on top of Silicon nanocrystals embedded in Silicon Dioxide. Purcell enhancements of up to 2 were observed, which matches the value from simulations. Plasmonic enhancements are observed for the first three orders of the plasmonic modes, with the peak enhancement wavelength varying with the periodicity. Biharmonic gratings are also fabricated to extract the enhanced emission from the first order plasmonic mode, resulting in enhancements with quality factors of up to 16.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures added explanation of low purcell enhancement updated figure

    Chiral anomalies in the reduced model

    On the basis of an observation due to Kiskis, Narayanan and Neuberger, we show that there is a remnant of chiral anomalies in the reduced model when a Dirac operator which obeys the Ginsparg-Wilson relation is employed for the fermion sector. We consider fermions belonging to the fundamental representation of the gauge group U(N) or SU(N). For vector-like theories, we determine a general form of the axial anomaly or the topological charge within a framework of a U(1) embedding. For chiral gauge theories with the gauge group U(N), a remnant of gauge anomaly emerges as an obstruction to a smooth fermion integration measure.     Zigzag edge modes in Z2 topological insulator: reentrance and completely flat spectrum

    The spectrum and wave function of helical edge modes in Z_2 topological insulator are derived on a square lattice using Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model. The BHZ model is characterized by a "mass" term M (k) that is parameterized as M (k) = Delta - B k^2. A topological insulator realizes when the parameters Delta and B fall on the regime, either 0 < Delta /B < 4 or 4 < Delta /B < 8. At Delta /B = 4, which separates the cases of positive and negative (quantized) spin Hall conductivities, the edge modes show a corresponding change that depends on the edge geometry. In the (1,0)-edge, the spectrum of edge mode remains the same against change of Delta /B, although the main location of the mode moves from the zone center for Delta /B < 4, to the zone boundary for Delta /B > 4 of the 1D Brillouin zone. In the (1,1)-edge geometry, the group velocity at the zone center changes sign at Delta /B = 4 where the spectrum becomes independent of the momentum, i.e. flat, over the whole 1D Brillouin zone. Furthermore, for Delta/B < 1.354..., the edge mode starting from the zone center vanishes in an intermediate region of the 1D Brillouin zone, but reenters near the zone boundary, where the energy of the edge mode is marginally below the lowest bulk excitations. On the other hand, the behavior of reentrant mode in real space is indistinguishable from an ordinary edge mode.Comment: 19 pages, 33 figure

    Efficient time series detection of the strong stochasticity threshold in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillator lattices

    In this work we study the possibility of detecting the so-called strong stochasticity threshold, i.e. the transition between weak and strong chaos as the energy density of the system is increased, in anharmonic oscillator chains by means of the 0-1 test for chaos. We compare the result of the aforementioned methodology with the scaling behavior of the largest Lyapunov exponent computed by means of tangent space dynamics, that has so far been the most reliable method available to detect the strong stochasticity threshold. We find that indeed the 0-1 test can perform the detection in the range of energy density values studied. Furthermore, we determined that conventional nonlinear time series analysis methods fail to properly compute the largest Lyapounov exponent even for very large data sets, whereas the computational effort of the 0-1 test remains the same in the whole range of values of the energy density considered with moderate size time series. Therefore, our results show that, for a qualitative probing of phase space, the 0-1 test can be an effective tool if its limitations are properly taken into account.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Laser Phase and Frequency Stabilization Using Atomic Coherence

    We present a novel and simple method of stabilizing the laser phase and frequency by polarization spectroscopy of an atomic vapor. In analogy to the Pound-Drever-Hall method, which uses a cavity as a memory of the laser phase, this method uses atomic coherence (dipole oscillations) as a phase memory of the transmitting laser field. A preliminary experiment using a distributed feedback laser diode and a rubidium vapor cell demonstrates a shot-noise-limited laser linewidth reduction (from 2 MHz to 20 kHz).     A simple construction of fermion measure term in U(1) chiral lattice gauge theories with exact gauge invariance

    In the gauge invariant formulation of U(1) chiral lattice gauge theories based on the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, the gauge field dependence of the fermion measure is determined through the so-called measure term. We derive a closed formula of the measure term on the finite volume lattice. The Wilson line degrees of freedom (torons) of the link field are treated separately to take care of the global integrability. The local counter term is explicitly constructed with the local current associated with the cohomologically trivial part of the gauge anomaly in a finite volume.     Solving the local cohomology problem in U(1) chiral gauge theories within a finite lattice

    In the gauge-invariant construction of abelian chiral gauge theories on the lattice based on the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, the gauge anomaly is topological and its cohomologically trivial part plays the role of the local counter term. We give a prescription to solve the local cohomology problem within a finite lattice by reformulating the Poincar\'e lemma so that it holds true on the finite lattice up to exponentially small corrections.
