Design comparison of experimental storm water detention systems treating concentrated road runoff

    Get PDF
The aim was to assess the treatment efficiencies of experimental storm water detention (extended storage) systems based on the Atlantis Water Management Limited detention cells receiving concentrated runoff that has been primary treated by filtration with different inert aggregates. Randomly collected gully pot liquor was used in stead of road runoff. To test for a 'worst case scenario', the experimental system received higher volumes and pollutant concentrations in comparison to real detention systems under real (frequently longer but diluted) runoff events. Gravel (6 and 20 mm), sand (1.5 mm), Ecosoil (inert 2 mm aggregate provided by Atlantis Water Management Limited), block paving and turf were tested in terms of their influence on the water quality. Concentrations of five-day @ 20 C ATU biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in contrast to suspended solids (SS) were frequently reduced to below international secondary wastewater treatment standards. The denitrification process was not completed. This resulted in higher outflow than inflow nitrate-nitrogen concentrations. An analysis of variance indicated that some systems were similar in terms of most of their treatment performance variables including BOD and SS. It follows that there is no advantage in using additional aggregates with high adsorption capacities in the primary treatment stage

Choice of best treatment in tibiofibular fractures should be based on many affecting factors such as age, wound contamination's, presence of associated conditions and availability of stabilization devices. This study is aimed to evaluating outcome of distal tibia and fibula fractures treated with intra medullary nailing in Firoozgar hospital during 2012-2014. In this cross- sectional study which was conducted in Firoozgar hospital in 2012-2014, 40 patients with distal tibiofibular fractures who was candidate for IM nailing were evaluated. Operation was done by intramedullary nailing method. Patients were followed up at 2 weeks, 1, 3, 6 and 12 month after surgery. Radiographic evaluation of union in tibia with anteroposterior and lateral view, as well as complications was assessed in each visit. Data were enterd to SPSS and were analyzed. Fifty patients with mean age of 34.67 (SD= 12.98) years (46 (92) male and 4 (8) female) were evaluated. Four (10) patients remained non- union from whom 3 (7.5) underwent ORIF treatment. Mean time of complete union achievement was 6.34 (SD= 3.54) months. Fourteen malunion were seen in this study that 1 (7.14) was varus (7°) and 13 (92.85) were valgus. No cases of deep infection, nerve injury or compartment syndrome were seen. We conclude that reamed, locked IM. nailing is a good method for achieving union in distal tibial fractures. High rate of union, low complication and deformity correction was seen with this method. © 2016, Oriental Scientific Publishing Company. All rights reserved

Monthly samples of six fish farms from January 2010 to December 2010 in the northern Iran, Haraz River, were used to determine relationship between chemical parameters of main water, inlet and outlet and their effects on fish growth and production. Results revealed that concentration of nutrients in outlet was more than that of inlet of farms, and statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between stations (p0.05) in different months. Correlation between daily growth, SGR, FCR, production and chemical parameters of water were analyzed by Pearson correlation. The results revealed negative correlation (α= 0.01) between nitrite and daily growth (P=0.004, Pearson correlation=-0.24), ammonium and SGR (P=0.0001, Pearson correlation=-0.272), although there were no correlation for FCR, and nutritional parameters (p>0.05)

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease that is characterized with noncaseating granulomatous nodules which present in multiple organs specially lungs (90). Incidence of masses due to Sarcoidosis in upper extremity is low and most cases present in association with involvement of pulmonary hilary lymph nodes. In this article we present a rare case of Sarcoidosis which presented as a single soft tissue mass in hand without osseous or pulmonary hillary lymph node involvement. Incidence of involvement of musculoskeletal system is 1-5 , mostly it occurs in small bones in hands and feet. In most cases involvement of soft tissue in extremities is accompanied with bone lesions. Those cases of soft tissue involvement are generally coincide with pulmonary lymph nodules. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of Sarcoidosis that presents without spreading in bones or pulmonary hilar lymph nodes. © 2016 BY THE ARCHIVES OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY

Role of nitric oxide on the electrophysiological properties of isolated rabbit atrioventricular node by extracellular field potential during atrial fibrillation

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to determine direct effects of NO modulation on protective electrophysiological properties of atrioventricular node (AV node) in the experimental model of AF in rabbit. Methods: Isolated perfused rabbit AV nodal preparations were used in two groups. In the first group (N=7), LNAME (50μM) was applied. In the second group (N=12), different concentrations of L - argenine (250 μM - 5000 μM) were added to the solution. Programmed stimulation protocols were used to quantify AV nodal conduction time, refractoriness and zone of concealment. AF protocol was executed by software with coupling intervals (ranging from 75–125 msec). Results: L-NAME had depressive effects on basic AV nodal properties. L-Arginine (250μM) had direct inhibitory effects on nodal conduction time, Wenckebach and refractoriness. Significant increases in the number of concealed beats were induced by L-Arginine (500 μM). Number of concealed beats were increased from 700.7±33.7 to 763±21 msec (P<0.05). Trend of zone of concealment prolongation in a frequency-dependent model was abrogated by Larginine (250, 5000 μM). Conclusion: NO at low concentration (in the presence of L-NAME) had facilitatory role on AV nodal properties, but at high concentration (in the presence of L-arginine) enhanced protective role of AV node during AF. Biphasic modulatory role of NO may affect protective behavior of AV node during AF. © 2011, Iranian Society of Physiology and Pharmacology. All rights reserved

Outage Performance of Uplink Two-tier Networks Under Backhaul Constraints

Multi-tier cellular communication networks constitute a promising approach to expand the coverage of cellular networks and enable them to offer higher data rates. In this paper, an uplink two-tier communication network is studied, in which macro users, femto users and femto access points are geometrically located inside the coverage area of a macro base station according to Poisson point processes. Each femtocell is assumed to have a fixed backhaul constraint that puts a limit on the maximum number of femto and macro users it can service. Under this backhaul constraint, the network adopts a special open access policy, in which each macro user is either assigned to its closest femto access point or to the macro base station, depending on the ratio between its distances from those two. Under this model, upper and lower bounds on the outage probabilities experienced by users serviced by femto access points are derived as functions of the distance between the macro base station and the femto access point serving them. Similarly, upper and lower bounds on the outage probabilities of the users serviced by the macro base station are obtained. The bounds in both cases are confirmed via simulation results
