Mass dependence of the hairpin vertex in quenched QCD
The pseudoscalar ``hairpin'' vertex (i.e. quark-disconnected vertex) plays a
key role in quenched chiral perturbation theory. Direct calculations using
lattice simulations find that it has a significant dependence on quark mass. I
show that this mass dependence can be used to determine the quenched
Gasser-Leutwyler constant L5. This complements the calculation of L5 using the
mass dependence of the axial decay constant of the pion. In an appendix, I
discuss power counting for quenched chiral perturbation theory and describe the

Cork-resin ablative insulation for complex surfaces and method for applying the same
A method of applying cork-resin ablative insulation material to complex curved surfaces is disclosed. The material is prepared by mixing finely divided cork with a B-stage curable thermosetting resin, forming the resulting mixture into a block, B-stage curing the resin-containing block, and slicing the block into sheets. The B-stage cured sheet is shaped to conform to the surface being insulated, and further curing is then performed. Curing of the resins only to B-stage before shaping enables application of sheet material to complex curved surfaces and avoids limitations and disadvantages presented in handling of fully cured sheet material
Evidence for quenched chiral logs
Using the pole shifting procedure of the modified quenched approximation
(MQA) to cure the exceptional configuration problem, accurate hadron hadron
spectrum calculations can be obtained at very light quark mass. Here we use the
MQA to extend and improve our previous investigation of chiral logs in the pion
mass. At beta=5.7 for Wilson fermion, we see clear evidence for quenched chiral
logarithms in the pion mass as a function of quark mass. The size of the
observed chiral log exponent delta is in good agreement with the value obtained
from a direct calculation of the eta' hairpin diagram.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Lattice 98 tal
Risk and Utility in Portfolio Optimization
Modern portfolio theory(MPT) addresses the problem of determining the optimum
allocation of investment resources among a set of candidate assets. In the
original mean-variance approach of Markowitz, volatility is taken as a proxy
for risk, conflating uncertainty with risk. There have been many subsequent
attempts to alleviate that weakness which, typically, combine utility and risk.
We present here a modification of MPT based on the inclusion of separate risk
and utility criteria. We define risk as the probability of failure to meet a
pre-established investment goal. We define utility as the expectation of a
utility function with positive and decreasing marginal value as a function of
yield. The emphasis throughout is on long investment horizons for which
risk-free assets do not exist. Analytic results are presented for a Gaussian
probability distribution. Risk-utility relations are explored via empirical
stock-price data, and an illustrative portfolio is optimized using the

Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Quenched Approximation of QCD
[This version is a minor revision of a previously submitted preprint. Only
references have been changed.] We describe a technique for constructing the
effective chiral theory for quenched QCD. The effective theory which results is
a lagrangian one, with a graded symmetry group which mixes Goldstone bosons and
fermions, and with a definite (though slightly peculiar) set of Feynman rules.
The straightforward application of these rules gives automatic cancellation of
diagrams which would arise from virtual quark loops. The techniques are used to
calculate chiral logarithms in , , , and the ratio of
to . The leading
finite-volume corrections to these quantities are also computed. Problems for
