Proper-time Resolution Function for Measurement of Time Evolution of B Mesons at the KEK B-Factory

The proper-time resolution function for the measurement of the time evolution of B mesons with the Belle detector at KEKB is studied in detail. The obtained resolution function is applied to the measurement of B meson lifetimes, the B0-B0bar oscillation frequency and time-dependent CP asymmetries.Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, to be published in NIM A, replaced with revised versio

Development and operational experience of magnetic horn system for T2K experiment

    Get PDF
A magnetic horn system to be operated at a pulsed current of 320 kA and to survive high-power proton beam operation at 750 kW was developed for the T2K experiment. The first set of T2K magnetic horns was operated for over 12 million pulses during the four years of operation from 2010 to 2013, under a maximum beam power of 230 kW, and 6.63×10206.63\times10^{20} protons were exposed to the production target. No significant damage was observed throughout this period. This successful operation of the T2K magnetic horns led to the discovery of the νμνe\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow\nu_e oscillation phenomenon in 2013 by the T2K experiment. In this paper, details of the design, construction, and operation experience of the T2K magnetic horns are described.Comment: 22 pages, 40 figures, also submitted to Nuclear Instrument and Methods in Physics Research,

We report the first observation of the B --> Dbar DsJ(2317) and B --> Dbar DsJ(2457) decays based on 123.8 10^6 BBar events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. We observe the DsJ(2317) decay to Ds pi0 and DsJ(2457) decay to the Ds* pi0 and Ds gamma final states. We also set 90% CL upper limits for the decays DsJ(2317) --> Ds* gamma, DsJ(2457) --> Ds* gamma, DsJ(2457) --> Ds pi0 and DsJ(2457) --> Ds pi+ pi-.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Study of CP Violating Effects in Time Dependent B0(B0ˉ)D()π±B^0(\bar{B^0}) \to D^{(*)\mp}\pi^{\pm} Decays

    We report measurements of time dependent decay rates for B0(Bˉ0)D()π±B^0(\bar{B}^0) \to D^{(*)\mp}\pi^{\pm} decays and extraction of CP violation parameters containing ϕ3\phi_3. Using fully reconstructed D()πD^{(*)}\pi events from a 140fb1140 {\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance, we obtain the CP violation parameters for DπD^* \pi and DπD \pi decays, 2RD()πsin(2ϕ1+ϕ3±δD()π)2R_{D^{(*)} \pi} \sin (2\phi_1 + \phi_3 \pm \delta_{D^{(*)} \pi}), where RD()πR_{D^{(*)} \pi} is the ratio of the magnitudes of the doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes, and δD()π\delta_{D^{(*)} \pi} is the strong phase difference between them. Under the assumption of δD()π\delta_{D^{(*)} \pi} being close to either 0 or 180180^{\circ}, we obtain 2RDπsin(2ϕ1+ϕ3)=0.060±0.040(stat)±0.019(sys)|2R_{D^* \pi} \sin (2\phi_1 + \phi_3)| = 0.060 \pm 0.040(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.019(\mathrm{sys}) and 2RDπsin(2ϕ1+ϕ3)=0.061±0.037(stat)±0.018(sys)|2R_{D \pi} \sin (2\phi_1 + \phi_3)| = 0.061 \pm 0.037(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.018(\mathrm{sys}).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to Physical Review Letter

Observation of Large CP Violation in the Neutral B Meson System

We present a measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter sin 2phi_1 based on a 29.1 fb^{-1} data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/psi Ks, psi(2S) Ks, chi_c1 Ks, eta_c Ks, J/psi K_L or J/psi K^{*0} decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin 2phi_1 = 0.99 +- 0.14(stat) +- 0.06(syst). We conclude that we have observed CP violation in the neutral B meson system.Comment: 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Letter

Using the Belle detector operating at the KEKB e+e- storage ring, we have measured the mean multiplicity and the momentum spectrum of neutral pions from the decays of the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure a mean of 4.70 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.22 neutral pions per Upsilon(4S) decay.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figs. Submitted to Phys.Rev.

Observation of Large CP Violation and Evidence for Direct CP Violation in B0-->pi+pi- Decays

We report the first observation of CP-violating asymmetries in B0 --> pi+pi- decays based on a 140 fb-1 data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0 --> pi+pi- CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. We apply an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points. The fit yields the CP-violating asymmetry amplitudes Apipi = +0.58+/-0.15(stat)+/-0.07(syst) and Spipi = -1.00+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.07(syst). We rule out the CP-conserving case, Apipi=Spipi=0, at a level of 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for direct CP violation with a significance at or greater than 3.2 standard deviations for any Spipi value.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

Measurement of B0d - B0d-bar mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the Upsilon(4S)

We report a determination of the B0d - B0d-bar mixing parameter Delta-m_d based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 /fb data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Delta-m_d as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Delta-m_d = 0.463 +- 0.008(stat.) +- 0.016(sys.) ps^{-1} This is the first determination of Delta-m_d from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

A Measurement of Lifetime Difference in D0D^0 Meson Decays

We report a measurement of the D0D^0-Dˉ0\bar{D}{}^0 mixing parameter yCPy_{CP} using 23.4 fb1^{-1} of data collected near the Υ\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. yCPy_{CP} is measured from the lifetime difference of D0D^0 mesons decaying into the Kπ+K^-\pi^+ state and the CP even eigenstate KK+K^-K^+. We find yCP=(0.5±1.00.8+0.7)×102y_{CP}=(-0.5\pm 1.0{}^{+0.7}_{-0.8})\times10^{-2}, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic, corresponding to a 95% confidence interval 0.030<yCP<0.020-0.030 < y_{CP} < 0.020.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
