The Trade-off between Processing Gains of an Impulse Radio UWB System in the Presence of Timing Jitter

    Get PDF
In time hopping impulse radio, NfN_f pulses of duration TcT_c are transmitted for each information symbol. This gives rise to two types of processing gain: (i) pulse combining gain, which is a factor NfN_f, and (ii) pulse spreading gain, which is Nc=Tf/TcN_c=T_f/T_c, where TfT_f is the mean interval between two subsequent pulses. This paper investigates the trade-off between these two types of processing gain in the presence of timing jitter. First, an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and approximate closed form expressions for bit error probability are derived for impulse radio systems with and without pulse-based polarity randomization. Both symbol-synchronous and chip-synchronous scenarios are considered. The effects of multiple-access interference and timing jitter on the selection of optimal system parameters are explained through theoretical analysis. Finally, a multipath scenario is considered and the trade-off between processing gains of a synchronous impulse radio system with pulse-based polarity randomization is analyzed. The effects of the timing jitter, multiple-access interference and inter-frame interference are investigated. Simulation studies support the theoretical results.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Communication

Performance Evaluation of Impulse Radio UWB Systems with Pulse-Based Polarity Randomization

In this paper, the performance of a binary phase shift keyed random time-hopping impulse radio system with pulse-based polarity randomization is analyzed. Transmission over frequency-selective channels is considered and the effects of inter-frame interference and multiple access interference on the performance of a generic Rake receiver are investigated for both synchronous and asynchronous systems. Closed form (approximate) expressions for the probability of error that are valid for various Rake combining schemes are derived. The asynchronous system is modelled as a chip-synchronous system with uniformly distributed timing jitter for the transmitted pulses of interfering users. This model allows the analytical technique developed for the synchronous case to be extended to the asynchronous case. An approximate closed-form expression for the probability of bit error, expressed in terms of the autocorrelation function of the transmitted pulse, is derived for the asynchronous case. Then, transmission over an additive white Gaussian noise channel is studied as a special case, and the effects of multiple-access interference is investigated for both synchronous and asynchronous systems. The analysis shows that the chip-synchronous assumption can result in over-estimating the error probability, and the degree of over-estimation mainly depends on the autocorrelation function of the ultra-wideband pulse and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio of the system. Simulations studies support the approximate analysis.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin

Optimal and Suboptimal Linear Receivers for Impulse Radio UWB Systems

    Get PDF
The high time resolution of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals results in a large number of multipath components (MPCs) arriving at the receiver, which presents a source of diversity. In addition to this multipath diversity, there is also repetition diversity inherent in impulse radio (IR) UWB systems, since a number of pulses are transmitted for each information symbol. In order to make optimal use of both multipath and repetition diversity, the receiver needs to consider the optimal conbination of contributions from both different frames and different MPCs. In this overview paper, the optimal linear receiver for a given user in frequency-selective multiuser environment, which combines all the samples from the received signal according to the minimum mean square error (MMSE), criterion is studied. Due to the complexity of this optimal receiver, two suboptimal receivers with lower complexity are considered, optimal frame combining (OFC) and optimal multipath combining (OMC) receivers, which reduce computational complexity by suboptimal combining in the multipath diversity and repetition domains, respectively. Finally, a two-step MMSE algorithm which reduces complexity by performing MMSE combining in two steps is presented, and its optimality properties are discussed. Simulations are performed to compare the performance of different receivers

A low-cost time-hopping impulse radio system for high data rate transmission

We present an efficient, low-cost implementation of time-hopping impulse radio that fulfills the spectral mask mandated by the FCC and is suitable for high-data-rate, short-range communications. Key features are: (i) all-baseband implementation that obviates the need for passband components, (ii) symbol-rate (not chip rate) sampling, A/D conversion, and digital signal processing, (iii) fast acquisition due to novel search algorithms, (iv) spectral shaping that can be adapted to accommodate different spectrum regulations and interference environments. Computer simulations show that this system can provide 110Mbit/s at 7-10m distance, as well as higher data rates at shorter distances under FCC emissions limits. Due to the spreading concept of time-hopping impulse radio, the system can sustain multiple simultaneous users, and can suppress narrowband interference effectively.Comment: To appear in EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing (Special Issue on UWB - State of the Art

We consider wireless systems with transmit and receive diversity. For reduction of complexity, we propose to use hybrid selection/maximal ratio transmission at one link end, choosing L out of N antennas. We analyze the performance of such systems, giving analytical bounds and comparing them to computer simulations. Outage probability, symbol error probability, and capacity are shown. We demonstrate that in typical cases, a small number of used antennas L is sufficient to achieve considerable performance gains. We also analyze the infuence of the number of base station antennas, of fading correlation and channel estimation errors. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme is effective in a variety of environments

Photonic superdiffusive motion in resonance line radiation trapping - partial frequency redistribution effects

    Get PDF
The relation between the jump length probability distribution function and the spectral line profile in resonance atomic radiation trapping is considered for Partial Frequency Redistribution (PFR) between absorbed and reemitted radiation. The single line Opacity Distribution Function [M.N. Berberan-Santos et.al. J.Chem.Phys. 125, 174308 (2006)] is generalized for PFR and used to discuss several possible redistribution mechanisms (pure Doppler broadening, combined natural and Doppler broadening and combined Doppler, natural and collisional broadening). It is shown that there are two coexisting scales with a different behavior: the small scale is controlled by the intricate PFR details while the large scale is essentially given by the atom rest frame redistribution asymptotic. The pure Doppler and combined natural, Doppler and collisional broadening are characterized by both small and large scale superdiffusive Levy flight behaviors while the combined natural and Doppler case has an anomalous small scale behavior but a diffusive large scale asymptotic. The common practice of assuming complete redistribution in core radiation and frequency coherence in the wings of the spectral distribution is incompatible with the breakdown of superdiffusion in combined natural and Doppler broadening conditions

Pogodnosti i izazovi determinističkog referentnog modela radijskog kanala

The paper introduces a new paradigm for reference channel models. Current reference channel models are designed as platforms that generate radio channels for testing using random values for their parameters. These parameters follow some pre-established distribution based on process called parameterization, i.e. statistical processing of previous real measurements or accurate ray tracing simulations. The paper argues that random generated channels give either no new insight or even delusive information and should be replaced with the initial set of radio channels that was used for parameterization. Therefore a deterministic reference channel model, as an emulator of previously recorded real radio channels, is proposed and its potential elaborated.U radu se uvodi nova paradigma za referentni model radijskog kanala.

Three-dimensional fluid simulation of a plasma display panel cell

In order to understand the discharge characteristics in an alternating current plasma display panel (ac PDP) and optimize it further, a three-dimensional fluid code (FL3P) has been developed. Using this simulator, various three-dimensional features of discharges are investigated in the sustain mode of PDP. First, the striations of wall charge are observed at both the anode and cathode side. Second, the local efficiency is obtained as a function of position. It is mainly divided into the anode region and the cathode region and highest near the anode center. Finally, the effects of various three-dimensional parameters are studied. As one of the examples showing the effect of electrode shaping, the discharge characteristics of a T-shaped electrode cell are compared with those of a conventional cell. The phosphor on barrier ribs contributes to over 44% of the total luminance, but barrier ribs themselves do not play an important role in the overall discharge efficiency. Address electrode width is not always proportional to the size of the discharge because of the wall loss of the particles to barrier ribs.open435

Review: Allelochemicals as multi-kingdom plant defence compounds: towards an integrated approach

Ā© 2020 The Authors. Pest Management Science published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Society of Chemical Industry. The capability of synthetic pesticides to manage weeds, insect pests and pathogens in crops has diminished due to evolved resistance. Sustainable management is thus becoming more challenging. Novel solutions are needed and, given the ubiquity of biologically active secondary metabolites in nature, such compounds require further exploration as leads for novel crop protection chemistry. Despite improving understanding of allelochemicals, particularly in terms of their potential for use in weed control, their interactions with multiple biotic kingdoms have to date largely been examined in individual compounds and not as a recurrent phenomenon. Here, multi-kingdom effects in allelochemicals are introduced by defining effects on various organisms, before exploring current understanding of the inducibility and possible ecological roles of these compounds with regard to the evolutionary arms race and doseā€“response relationships. Allelochemicals with functional benefits in multiple aspects of plant defence are described. Gathering these isolated areas of science under the unified umbrella of multi-kingdom allelopathy encourages the development of naturally-derived chemistries conferring defence to multiple discrete biotic stresses simultaneously, maximizing benefits in weed, insect and pathogen control, while potentially circumventing resistance. Interference management for moving networks in ultra-dense urban scenarios

    Get PDF
The number of users relying on broadband wireless connectivity while riding public transportation vehicles is increasing significantly. One of the promising solutions is to deploy moving base stations on public transportation vehicles to form moving networks (MNs) that serve these vehicular users inside the vehicles. In this study, we investigated the benefits and challenges in deploying MNs in ultra-dense urban scenarios. We identified that the key challenge limiting the performance of MNs in ultra-dense urban scenarios is inter-cell interference, which is exacerbated by the urban canyon effects. To address this challenge, we evaluated different inter-cell interference coordination and multi-antenna interference suppression techniques for MNs. We showed that in using MNs together with effective interference management approaches, the quality of service for users in vehicles can be significantly improved, with negligible impacts on the performance of regular outdoor users
