The rapid development of wireless communication technologies and portable mobile devices such as laptops, PDAs, smart phones and wireless sensors brings the best out of mobile computing particularly mobile ad-hoc and sensor networks. Nowadays, most of researchers working on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) focus on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks (MASNETs) due to their wide range of potential applications ranging from underwater monitoring to search and rescue mobile robotics applications. In this research work, through extensive simulation, we have evaluated the capability of Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol on how far it can react to different mobility duration of mobile nodes in MASNETs. The performance of AODV is investigated in terms of the average percentage of packet loss and energy consumption. The initial performance study demonstrates that the performance of AODV is signicantly decreased in mobile environment due to the frequent topology change in MASNETs. Therefore, in order to enhance the performance of AODV in MASNETs, the new routing algorithm based on the estimated distance is proposed to replace the hop count for the selection of next node during the packet transmission. The estimated distance is computed based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values that are collected during the communication between the sensor nodes. The performance of the proposed solution is also further evaluated and compared with the existing AODV routing protocol in term of their energy consumption and percentage of packet loss. Our study demonstrates that the proposed solution outperform the existing AODV in MASNETs

Intelligent coordinator selection mechanism (ICSM) for IEEE802.15.4 beacon-enabled MAC protocol in mobile wireless sensor networks

The IEEE802.15.4 beacon-enabled MAC protocol supports a simple coordinator selection mechanism (CSM) in static WSNs as well as mobile WSNs, where CSM normally selects the nearest coordinator. However, CSM is not suitable for constant moving node in mobile WSNs, where node will be switching coordinators too often due to strong mobility and low coverage range. In mobile WSNs, the node needs to select the best coordinator that has potential to provide longest connectivity period. This paper introduces the Intelligent Coordinator Selection Mechanism (ICSM) which supports the node to select the best coordinators. The proposed mechanism is based on link quality indicator (LQI) values of the received beacon frames from the nearby coordinators. The node selects the coordinator for association that has potential to provide the longest connectivity period. Our proposed ICSM reduces the energy consumption, enhance the association period and the throughput, and minimize the number of switching amongst the coordinators. The mobile node connectivity period is improved from 55% to 86% (static) and 94% (mobile), while the number of association attempts are reduced from 13% to 6% (static) and 2% (mobile) coordinators

Tracking and detection system is increasingly popular but specific system design for tracking child’s location has not been well established especially for indoor location. The purpose of this paper is to explore the usage of Wi-Fi Positioning System which can be used to locate people’s position based on their Wi-Fi-enabled device in the public area and also for tourists who visited rural area.It takes the advantage of location services and uses the existing Wi-Fi service found in Android mobile phones. The system use the signal strength from Wi-Fi access point in certain area to determine ones location based on Wi-Fienabled device. The tracking system allows parent to add their own map or take image from existing map and then they can display their child’s current location on a real time map.The significant of this project will increase the security level of the children and can also be used to increase the security and safety of the tourist who intended to visit the rural area
