Laser communications through the atmosphere
Atmospheric properties affecting laser propagation with reference to optical communications are reviewed. Some of the optical space network configurations and various diversity techniques that may need to be utilized to develop robust bi-directional space-earth laser communication links are explored
Atmospheric propagation issues relevant to optical communications
Atmospheric propagation issues relevant to space-to-ground optical communications for near-earth applications are studied. Propagation effects, current optical communication activities, potential applications, and communication techniques are surveyed. It is concluded that a direct-detection space-to-ground link using redundant receiver sites and temporal encoding is likely to be employed to transmit earth-sensing satellite data to the ground some time in the future. Low-level, long-term studies of link availability, fading statistics, and turbulence climatology are recommended to support this type of application
Dopamine receptors gene expression in male rat hippocampus after administration of MDMA (Ecstasy) [La Expresión Génica de Receptores de Dopamina en el Hipocampo de Ratas Macho Después de la Administración de MDMA (Éxtasis)]
Ecstasy is one of the most popular amusing drugs among young people. Documents indicate some effects of Ecstasy on hippocampus and close relations between dopaminergic functions with reward learning. Therefore, the aim of this study was evaluation of the chronic effects of Ecstasy on memory in male Wistar rats and determination of dopamine receptors' gene expression in hippocampus. Forty adult male Wistar rats randomly distributed in five groups: Control, sham (received 1 ml/kg 0.9 saline) and three experimental groups were: Exp. 1 (2.5 mg/kg), Exp. 2 (5 mg/kg), and Exp. 3 (10 mg/kg) received MDMA intraperitoneally once every 7 days (3 times a day, 3 hours apart) for 4 weeks. Before the first injection animals trained in Shuttle Box memory and tested after the last injection. 24 hours after the final testing, brains of rats were dissected and hippocampus was removed and homogenized. After total RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, expression of dopamine receptor genes in the hippocampus determined with Real-Time PCR. Our results showed that 2.5 and 5 mg/kg MDMA-treated groups had memory impairment. Also we found that MDMA increased the mRNA expression of dopamine receptors in hippocampus and the highest increase found in dopamine D1 receptors in the 5 mg/kg experimental group. We concluded that low doses of Ecstasy could increase Dopamine takers gene expression in hippocampus and disorder avoidance memory. But in high doses the increase in Dopamine takers gene expression was not as much as that in low doses and avoidance memory disorder was not observed. © 2015, Universidad de la Frontera. Robust Parameter Selection for Parallel Tempering
This paper describes an algorithm for selecting parameter values (e.g.
temperature values) at which to measure equilibrium properties with Parallel
Tempering Monte Carlo simulation. Simple approaches to choosing parameter
values can lead to poor equilibration of the simulation, especially for Ising
spin systems that undergo -order phase transitions. However, starting
from an initial set of parameter values, the careful, iterative respacing of
these values based on results with the previous set of values greatly improves
equilibration. Example spin systems presented here appear in the context of
Quantum Monte Carlo.Comment: Accepted in International Journal of Modern Physics C 2010,

Interacting Spinors-Scalars and AdS/CFT Correspondence
By taking the interacting spinor-scalar theory on the space we
calculate the boundary CFT correlation functions using AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: The crucial role of the surface term in the action to generate the
correlation functions quadratic in spinors is considered. LaTeX file, 8 page
Ambipolar Nernst effect in NbSe
The first study of Nernst effect in NbSe reveals a large quasi-particle
contribution with a magnitude comparable and a sign opposite to the vortex
signal. Comparing the effect of the Charge Density Wave(CDW) transition on Hall
and Nernst coefficients, we argue that this large Nernst signal originates from
the thermally-induced counterflow of electrons and holes and indicates a
drastic change in the electron scattering rate in the CDW state. The results
provide new input for the debate on the origin of the anomalous Nernst signal
in high-T cuprates.Comment: 5 pages including 4 figure
Interaction of Branes at Angles in M(atrix) Model
Interactions of relatively rotated Dp-branes in 1, 2, 3 and 4 angles in
M(atrix) model are calculated and it is found to be in agreement with string
theory calculations. In 4 angles case the agreement is achieved after
subtracting the contribution of the single chiral fermionic zero mode.Comment: LaTeX file, 8 pages, to appear in PL
A New Technique to Improve the Operation of Prosthetic Limbs during Muscle Fatigue
Prosthetic limbs hold a promise to renew the quality of life for the amputee. Neural commands are decoded via a classifier to generate control signals for the prosthetic devices. In the literature, many challenges and limitations have been identified that affect the prosthesis operation. One such drawback is muscle fatigue which degrades the surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals, and consequently, the performance of the deployed classification algorithm declines from 90% to 50% of average accuracy. We used a new technique using the Linear Discrimination Analysis (LDA) algorithm and the muscle synergy-based task discrimination (MSD) algorithm to improve the classification accuracy. In this technique, during muscles contraction/fatigue, we used the LDA algorithms in the beginning and the MSD algorithms later. The applied technique exhibited better movement classification performance during normal and muscle fatigue conditions. However, more work needs to be done to effectively solve the muscle fatigue problem in prosthesis design
