Alltagsgeschichte, social science history and the study of mundane movements in 19th century Germany

(psz)German residency registers have been used in a variety of ways to develop important insights into migration and its contribution to the development of an urban-industrial world. Because manuscript census data for the 19th century has not survived in central Europe except in limited areas, these registers will continue to provide a fundamental source for historical analyses, especially when linked with other documents such as employment records, marriage contracts, and vital records. Continuous residency registers present a unique opportunity to define more accurately the character and quality of German life during a period of fundamental social changes and to understand the degree to which ordinary people were able to actively shape their own destinies

The Effects of Testosterone Propionate on the Testes, Seminal Vesicles and Prostate of Intact and Castrate Rats

    Get PDF
Much work has been done upon the response of immature rats\u27 testes and accessories to male hormones. The treatments in general have been over a long period of time. In this research, the effects of testosterone propionate on the testes and accessories were observed after injection of testosterone propionate for a period of 14 days. The objectives being: I. To study the normal condition of the testes and accessory sex organs of the rat which may be compared with modifications of these organs in experimental animals. II. To observe the responses that the male testes and accessories make after the injection of testosterone propionate into 22 days of age rats for a period of 14 days. III. To determine if the effects of testosterone propionate are parallel to the effects of the male hormone secreted by the testes. IV. To show how castration affect the accessory sex organs, and find out if testosterone propionate injection will prevent the appearance of castrate characteristics

Booker T. Washington\u27s Tour of the Sunshine State, March 1912

Booker T. Washington, the preeminent African-American leader of his day, won followers and supporters by taking educational tours through Southern states. Traveling through Arkansas and the Oklahoma and Indian territories in 1905 won him much support for his agenda. His most successful tour, however, was through Mississippi in 1908, directed Charles Banks, setting the standard for subsequent tours. On his Mississippi trip, Washington spoke to an estimated forty thousand to eighty thousand people. Over the years, he spoke to well over 350,000 black and white people through these campaigns. Indeed, they were his means to meet the masses of my people and to instruct them as far as I can through speadking to help them in their industrial and moral life. 1 After the successful Mississippi tour, Washington traveled through South Carolina, Virginia, West Virgina, and Tennessee in 1909, North Carolina in 1910, Texas in 1911, and Florida in 1912.

Space biology initiative program definition review. Trade study 2: Prototype utilization in the development of space biology hardware

    Get PDF
The objective was to define the factors which space flight hardware developers and planners should consider when determining: (1) the number of hardware units required to support program; (2) design level of the units; and (3) most efficient means of utilization of the units. The analysis considered technology risk, maintainability, reliability, and safety design requirements for achieving the delivery of highest quality flight hardware. Relative cost impacts of the utilization of prototyping were identified. The development of Space Biology Initiative research hardware will involve intertwined hardware/software activities. Experience has shown that software development can be an expensive portion of a system design program. While software prototyping could imply the development of a significantly different end item, an operational system prototype must be considered to be a combination of software and hardware. Hundreds of factors were identified that could be considered in determining the quantity and types of prototypes that should be constructed. In developing the decision models, these factors were combined and reduced by approximately ten-to-one in order to develop a manageable structure based on the major determining factors. The Baseline SBI hardware list of Appendix D was examined and reviewed in detail; however, from the facts available it was impossible to identify the exact types and quantities of prototypes required for each of these items. Although the factors that must be considered could be enumerated for each of these pieces of equipment, the exact status and state of development of the equipment is variable and uncertain at this time

    Bankruptcy and Economic Recovery

    Get PDF
To measure economic growth or recovery, one traditionally looks to metrics such as the unemployment rate and the growth in GDP. And in terms of figuring out institutional policies that will stimulate economic growth, the focus most often is on policies that encourage investment, entrepreneurial enterprises, and reward risk-taking with appropriate returns. Bankruptcy academics that we are, we tend to add our own area of expertise to this stable— with the firm belief that thinking critically about bankruptcy policy is an important element of any set of institutions designed to speed economic recovery. In this paper, written for a book entitled “Restructuring Financial Infrastructure to Speed Recovery” to be published by the Brookings Institution, we outline the crucial role we believe bankruptcy plays in advancing a robust economy, while also identifying several areas in which we believe bankruptcy law—and practice—could be improved so as to enhance bankruptcy’s role in economic growth, including its recovery from periods of recession. Along the way, we suggest that a standard (and appropriate) baseline metric for successful economic policies, namely employment, if carried outside its macro focus so as to become an independent bankruptcy policy (as it often is), carries with it—usually inadvertently— the potential to undermine bankruptcy’s key role in facilitating economic growth

Dynamic Resolution of Large Financial Institutions

One of the more important issues emerging out of the 2008 financial crisis concerns the proper resolution of a systemically important financial institution. In response to this, Title II of Dodd-Frank created the Orderly Liquidation Authority, or OLA, which is designed to create a resolution framework for systemically important financial institutions that is based on the resolution authority that the FDIC has held over commercial bank failures. In this article, we consider the various alternatives for resolving systemically important institutions. Among these alternatives, we discuss OLA, a European-style bail-in process, and coerced mergers, while also extensively focusing on the bankruptcy code. We argue that implementing several discrete modifications to Dodd-Frank, as well adopting an ambitious Chapter 14 proposal written by a working group at the Hoover Institution is the best way forward for establishing a strong resolution framework
