A status-based crisis of teacher shortages? A discussion
The theory of status, applied by Ovenden-Hope (2022) to the current crisis of teacher shortages, helps to identify one of the underlying factors that impact teachers entering the teaching workforce in England. In this appreciative response to her paper, I argue that the structural factors that have come about with the neoliberal policy agenda of the last 40 years have impacted the status of teaching and the educative purpose, and that without a clear understanding of, and willingness to oppose, these structural factors, it is unlikely that we will solve the recruitment/retention challenge. These factors contribute to the low esteem in which teachers are held because of their perceived short period of training; public knowledge and curriculum access; the reconfiguring of teachers from knowledgeable guides to deliverers of content; and the co-option of the teaching profession as an arm of the state. The neoliberal or marketised teleology of education militates against the historic status of the teacher, and it is unlikely that teacher status will improve while they are teaching in an education system geared to the production of economically active adult
Small-scale convection beneath the transverse ranges, California: Implications for interpretation of gravity anomalies
Tomographic inversion of upper mantle P wave velocity heterogeneities beneath southern California shows two prominent features: an east-west trending curtain of high velocity material (up to 3% fast) in the upper 250 km beneath the Transverse Ranges and a region of low velocity material (up to 4% slow) in the 100 km beneath the Salton Trough. These seismic velocity anomalies were interpreted as due to small scale convection in the mantle. Using this hypothesis and assuming that temperature and density anomalies are linearly related to seismic velocity anomalies through standard coefficients of proportionality, leads to inferred variations of approx. + or - 300 C and approx. + or - 0.03 g/cc

Development of stochastic models of window state changes in educational buildings
How people would like to interact with surrounding environment will subsequently influence indoor thermal conditions and further impact building energy performance. In order to understand occupants' adaptive behaviours in terms of environmental control utilization from the point of view of quantification, an investigation on windows operation was carried out in non-air-conditioned educational buildings in the UK during summer time considering the effects of occupant type (active and passive) and the time of a day. Outdoor air temperature was a better predictor or window operation than indoor air temperature. Window operation was found to be time-evolving event. The purpose or criteria of adjusting window states were different at different occupancy stages. Active occupants were more willing to change windows states in response to outdoor air temperature variations. Sub-models predicting transition probabilities of window state for different occupant type and occupancy stages were developed. The results derived from this field study are helpful with improving building simulation accuracy by integrating sub-models into simulation software and further providing guideline on building energy reduction without sacrificing indoor thermal comfort
ALMA view of the circumstellar environment of the post-common-envelope-evolution binary system HD101584
We study the circumstellar evolution of the binary HD101584, consisting of a
post-AGB star and a low-mass companion, which is most likely a
post-common-envelope-evolution system. We used ALMA observations of the 12CO,
13CO, and C18O J=2-1 lines and the 1.3mm continuum to determine the morphology,
kinematics, masses, and energetics of the circumstellar environment. The
circumstellar medium has a bipolar hour-glass structure, seen almost pole-on,
formed by an energetic jet, about 150 km/s. We conjecture that the
circumstellar morphology is related to an event that took place about 500 year
ago, possibly a capture event where the companion spiraled in towards the AGB
star. However, the kinetic energy of the accelerated gas exceeds the released
orbital energy, and, taking into account the expected energy transfer
efficiency of the process, the observed phenomenon does not match current
common-envelope scenarios. This suggests that another process must augment, or
even dominate, the ejection process. A significant amount of material resides
in an unresolved region, presumably in the equatorial plane of the binary
