TTF: a flexible approach to narrowband imaging
The Taurus Tunable Filter (TTF) is a tunable narrowband interference filter
covering wavelengths from 6300 A to the sensitivity drop-off of conventional
CCDs (9600 A), although a blue `arm' (3700-6500 A) is to be added by the end of
1997. The TTF offers monochromatic imaging at the cassegrain foci of both the
Anglo-Australian and William Herschel Telescopes, with an adjustable passband
of between 6 and 60 A. In addition, frequency switching with the TTF can be
synchronized to movement of charge (charge shuffling) on the CCD which has many
important applications in astrophysics. Here we review different modes of TTF.

Astrochemistry and Astrophotonics for an Antarctic Observatory
Due to its location and climate, Antarctica offers unique conditions for
long-period observations across a broad wavelength regime, where important
diagnostic lines for molecules and ions can be found, that are essential to
understand the chemical properties of the interstellar medium. In addition to
the natural benefits of the site, new technologies, resulting from
astrophotonics, may allow miniaturised instruments, that are easier to
winterise and advanced filters to further reduce the background in the

The Taurus Tunable Filter Field Galaxy Survey: Sample Selection and Narrowband Number-Counts
Recent evidence suggests a falling volume-averaged star-formation rate (SFR)
over z ~ 1. It is not clear, however, the extent to which the selection of such
samples influences the measurement of this quantity. Using the Taurus Tunable
Filter (TTF) we have obtained an emission-line sample of faint star-forming
galaxies over comparable lookback times: the TTF Field Galaxy Survey. By
selecting through emission-lines, we are screening galaxies through a quantity
that scales directly with star-formation activity for a given choice of initial
mass function. The scanning narrowband technique furnishes a galaxy sample that
differs from traditional broadband-selected surveys in both its volume-limited
nature and selection of galaxies through emission-line flux. Three discrete
wavelength intervals are covered, centered at H-alpha redshifts z = 0.08, 0.24
and 0.39.
Galaxy characteristics are presented and comparisons made with existing
surveys of both broadband and emission-line selection. When the number-counts
of emission-line objects are compared with those expected on the basis of
existing H-alpha surveys, we find an excess of ~ 3 times at the faintest
limits. While these detections are yet to be independently confirmed,
inspection of the stronger subsample of galaxies detected in both the line and
continuum (line-on-continuum subsample; 13 %) is sufficient to support an
excess population. This increase in the emission-line field population implies
higher star-formation densities over z ~ 0.4. However, further study in the
form of multi-object spectroscopic follow-up is necessary to quantify this and

Anharmonic mixing in a magnetic trap
We have experimentally observed re-equilibration of a magnetically trapped
cloud of metastable neon atoms after it was put in a non-equilibrium state.
Using numerical simulations we show that anharmonic mixing, equilibration due
to the collisionless dynamics of atoms in a magnetic trap, is the dominant
process in this equilibration. We determine the dependence of its time on trap
parameters and atom temperature. Furthermore we observe in the simulations a
resonant energy exchange between the radial and axial trap dimensions at a
ratio of trap frequencies \omega_r / \omega_z = 3/2. This resonance is
explained by a simple oscillator model.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Synthesis of high-oxidation Y-Ba-Cu-O phases in superoxygenated thin films
It is known that solid-state reaction in high-pressure oxygen can stabilize
high-oxidation phases of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors in powder form. We extend
this superoxygenation concept of synthesis to thin films which, due to their
large surface-to-volume ratio, are more reactive thermodynamically. Epitaxial
thin films of grown by pulsed laser deposition are
annealed at up to 700 atm O and 900C, in conjunction with Cu
enrichment by solid-state diffusion. The films show clear formation of
and as well as regions
of and YBaCuO phases,
according to scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and
x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Similarly annealed
powders show no phase conversion. Our results demonstrate a novel route of
synthesis towards discovering more complex phases of cuprates and other

Resonant X-Ray Scattering Measurements of a Spatial Modulation of the Cu 3d and O 2p Energies in Stripe-Ordered Cuprate Superconductors
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate
superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a
microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant
elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered
LaNdSrCuO at the Cu and O absorption
edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the
energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant
signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d
and O 2p states rather than the large modulation of the charge density
(valence) envisioned in the common stripe paradigm. These energy shifts are
interpreted as a spatial modulation of the electronic structure and may point
to a valence-bond-solid interpretation of the stripe phase.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
