    Location Choices of Migrant Nest-Leavers: Spatial Assimilation or Continued Segregation?

    We examine ethnic differences in the ethnic composition of the destination neighbourhood upon leaving the parental home using administrative data for the entire birth cohort 1983 living in the Netherlands. The analysis provides little evidence of a clear intergenerational break in the location choices of young men and women from a non-western origin compared to their parents. The neighbourhood choice pattern of those who leave the parental home for independent and shared living arrangements does not differ markedly from that of their parents, while nest-leavers for union formation are more likely to move to neighbourhoods with a relatively small proportion of non-western inhabitants. A decomposition analysis indicates that an overwhelmingly large part of neighbourhood choice is explained by differences in background variables. Particularly, the origin neighbourhood type of nest-leavers seems to be a driving force underlying the choice of destination neighbourhood, given individual and parental socioeconomic characteristics.leaving home, spatial assimilation, migrants

    Monetary Transmission Mechanism In An Open Economy Framework: The Case Of Turkey

    Monetary transmission mechanism (MTM) is an illuminating policy tool in appreciating the monetary policy implementations by policy makers upon various nominal and real factors of interest in the eyes of economic agents. Especially in an open economy such as Turkish economy highly exposed to the effects of capital flows on domestic business cycles with a liberalised capital account, control over policy aggregates may be difficult since many other economic policy implementations would be of great consequence on some other policy targets on macroeconomic income generation process and in providing price stability and external balance. In this respect, in our paper we aim to estimate the MTM for the Turkish economy. Our ex-post estimates for the period 1992-2004 using contemporaneous vector autoregression models such as impulse response analysis indicate that weakly exogeneous capital inflows appreciate the real effective exchange rate, and in turn lower the real interest rates and domestic inflation while increasing both the real output growth and also the stock exchange index considering an asset-price channel for the latter and vice versa. We find some significant effects of the courses of capital flows and real effective exchange rate on monetary policy variable in the transmission mechanism, and such a case may impose an endogeneous characteristic on the policy variable given also that both domestic real interest structure is highly sensible to the monetary policy and that monetary policy is subject to the structural breaks in the sense of so-called Lucas’ critique of contemporaneous economics.Monetary Transmission Mechanism, Turkish Economy, Capital Flows, Real Exchange Rate, Real Interest Rate, Inflation, Income Growth, Stock Exchange, Price Puzzle

    Non-parametric comparison of histogrammed two-dimensional data distributions using the Energy Test

    When monitoring complex experiments, comparison is often made between regularly acquired histograms of data and reference histograms which represent the ideal state of the equipment. With the larger HEP experiments now ramping up, there is a need for automation of this task since the volume of comparisons could overwhelm human operators. However, the two-dimensional histogram comparison tools available in ROOT have been noted in the past to exhibit shortcomings. We discuss a newer comparison test for two-dimensional histograms, based on the Energy Test of Aslan and Zech, which provides more conclusive discrimination between histograms of data coming from different distributions than methods provided in a recent ROOT release.The Science and Technology Facilities Council, U

    Wavelet transforms of meteorological parameters and gravity waves

    The main purpose of this paper is to analyze some characteristics of gravity waves (GWs), and seasonal variations of atmospheric waves over Istanbul by using wavelet techniques. Daily radiosonda data of Istanbul in the troposphere and lower stratosphere (1000hPa-30hPa) between 1993 and 1997 have been considered. Wavelet analysis based on a computer simulation of data is generally close to the real data when Daubechies wavelet series are used. Daily, monthly, seasonal and annual variations of pressure heights, air temperature and deviations from mean values have been analyzed. Variations show the effects of gravity waves for different pressure levels in the troposphere. These waves lead to the meso-scale wave-form structures in spring, autumn and winter. As a result of this study, wavelet series and transforms for data construction, definition of some discontinuities and the local effects on the signal have been compared with the results of previous studies. The most similar structure between temperature, turbulence parameters and geo-potential height deviations has been defined at the 500-hPa pressure level

    A model for shock wave chaos

    We propose the following model equation: ut+1/2(u2uus)x=f(x,us),u_{t}+1/2(u^{2}-uu_{s})_{x}=f(x,u_{s}), that predicts chaotic shock waves. It is given on the half-line x<0x<0 and the shock is located at x=0x=0 for any t0t\ge0. Here us(t)u_{s}(t) is the shock state and the source term ff is assumed to satisfy certain integrability constraints as explained in the main text. We demonstrate that this simple equation reproduces many of the properties of detonations in gaseous mixtures, which one finds by solving the reactive Euler equations: existence of steady traveling-wave solutions and their instability, a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations, onset of chaos, and shock formation in the reaction zone.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
