Comparison of thread-cutting behaviour in three specialist predatory mites to cope with complex webs of Tetranychus spider mites
Anti-predator defenses provided by complex webs of Tetranychus mites can severely impede the performance of generalist predatory mites, whereas this may not be true for specialist predatory mites. Although some specialist predatory mites have developed morphological protection to reduce the adverse effects of complex webs, little is known about their behavioral abilities to cope with the webs. In this study, we compared thread-cutting behavior of three specialist predatory mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis, Neoseiulus womersleyi and N. californicus, exhibited inside the complex web of T. urticae. No major difference was observed among them in the basic pattern of this behavior, using chelicerae and palps, and in the number of silken threads severed while moving inside the web. Dispersion Relations in String Theory
We analyze the analytic continuation of the formally divergent one-loop
amplitude for scattering of the graviton multiplet in the Type II Superstring.
In particular we obtain explicit double and single dispersion relations,
formulas for all the successive branch cuts extending out to plus infinity, as
well as for the decay rate of a massive string state of arbitrary mass 2N into
two string states of lower mass. We compare our results with the box diagram in
a superposition of -like field theories. The stringy effects are traced

Current-feedback-stabilized laser system for quantum simulation experiments using Yb clock transition at 578 nm
We developed a laser system for the spectroscopy of the clock transition in
ytterbium (Yb) atoms at 578 nm based on an interference-filter stabilized
external-cavity diode laser (IFDL) emitting at 1156 nm. Owing to the improved
frequency-to-current response of the laser-diode chip and the less sensitivity
of the IFDL to mechanical perturbations, we succeeded in stabilizing the
frequency to a high-finesse ultra-low-expansion glass cavity with a simple
current feedback system. Using this laser system, we performed high-resolution
clock spectroscopy of Yb and found that the linewidth of the stabilized laser

Momentum Analyticity and Finiteness of the 1-Loop Superstring Amplitude
The Type II Superstring amplitude to 1-loop order is given by an integral of
-functions over the moduli space of tori, which diverges for real
momenta. We construct the analytic continuation which renders this amplitude
well defined and finite, and we find the expected poles and cuts in the complex

Time-lapse ratios of cone excitations in natural scenes
The illumination in natural environments varies through the day. Stable inferences about surface color might be supported by spatial ratios of cone excitations from the reflected light, but their invariance has been quantified only for global changes in illuminant spectrum. The aim here was to test their invariance under natural changes in both illumination spectrum and geometry, especially in the distribution of shadows. Time-lapse hyperspectral radiance images were acquired from five outdoor vegetated and nonvegetated scenes. From each scene, 10,000 pairs of points were sampled randomly and ratios measured across time. Mean relative deviations in ratios were generally large, but when sampling was limited to short distances or moderate time intervals, they fell below the level for detecting violations in ratio invariance. When illumination changes with uneven geometry were excluded, they fell further, to levels obtained with global changes in illuminant spectrum alone. Within sampling constraints, ratios of cone excitations, and also of opponent-color combinations, provide an approximately invariant signal for stable surface-color inferences, despite spectral and geometric variations in scene illumination.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, United Kingdom (Grant Nos. Initial stages of GaN/GaAs(100) growth by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition
A study of GaN buffers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on (001) GaAs substrates was performed. Nucleation images obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) were employed to investigate the growth temperature, growth time, and growth rate dependence of the nucleation mechanisms. The growth mode corresponds to two‐dimensional (2D) island nucleation at low temperatures, while three‐dimensional (3D) island growth is observed at high temperatures. Large grain sizes and good surface coverage was obtained for 3 min growth. Higher growth rates help nucleation on mismatched substrate and promote the 2D growth mode. GaN films 0.5 μm thick were grown on different buffers using a two‐step technique as suggested by the AFM analysis and their morphology was found to improve when grown on optimized buffers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70328/2/JAPIAU-80-3-1823-1.pd
Multigap Superconductivity in YC: A C-NMR Study
We report on the superconducting (SC) properties of YC with a
relatively high transition temperature K investigated by
C nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements under a magnetic field.
The C Knight shift has revealed a significant decrease below , suggesting a spin-singlet superconductivity. From an analysis of the
temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in
the SC state, YC is demonstrated to be a multigap superconductor that
exhibits a large gap at the main band and a
small gap at other bands. These results have
revealed that YC is a unique multigap s-wave superconductor similar to
