    The effects of lime content and environmental temperature on the mechanical and hydraulic properties of extremely high plastic clays

    YesThis paper focuses on monitoring the evolution of lime-clay reactions using geotechnical parameters as a function of lime content and environmental temperature. Lime contents of 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13% by dry weight of expansive clay powder were added to prepare lime-clay specimens. The specimens were prepared at the same dry unit weight of 12.16 kN/m3 and moisture content of 40% except for tests aimed at the determination of dry unit weight as a function of mellowing period. Prepared specimens were mellowed or cured at two different ambient temperatures of 20 °C and 40 °C. Results attained from Unconfined Compressive Strength and permeability tests were employed to assess the impact of lime content on the mechanical and hydraulic properties of lime treated expansive clays. The results revealed that at the beginning, the rate of strength gain is remarkably fast for a particular period of time which is dependent on lime content. Furthermore, the strength gain on specimens cured at 40 °C is 8 times higher than that observed on specimens cured at 20 °C which highlights significant effect for the environmental temperature on accelerating the chemical reactions. Reduced dry unit weight due to increased resistance to compactability is observable with increasing lime content and higher environmental temperature. Accelerated pozzolanic reaction at higher environmental temperature resulted in permeability coefficient of specimens mellowed for 24 h at 40 °C to be higher than those mellowed at 20 °C. The results also highlighted that the permeability coefficient would be relatively stable when expansive clays were treated with small amounts of lime e.g. 5%

    The spectrum of MEFV gene mutations and genotype-phenotype correlation in Egyptian patients with familial Mediterranean fever

    Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease mainly affecting subjects of the Mediterranean origin. It is an auto-inflammatory periodic disorder that is caused by mutations in the Mediterranean fever gene (MEFV) located on chromosome 16.Methods: The current study was designed to assess the prevalence and frequency of different MEFV gene mutations among 104 FMF clinically diagnosed Egyptian patients and to evaluate the change extent in the values of some biochemical markers (ESR, CRP, Fibrinogen-C, SAA and IL1) in different participants with different FMF severity scores.Results: According to allele status 28 patients (27%) were homozygous mutation carriers, 38 (36.5%) were with compound heterozygous mutations and 38 (36.5%) were identified as heterozygous for one of the studied mutations. Of the studied mutations, M694I, E148Q, V726A, M680I, and M694V accounted for 28.1%, 26.8%, 16.9%, and 11.3% of mutations respectively. The R761H and P369S mutations were rarely encountered mutations (1.4%). The clinical features with M694I were associated with more severe clinical course. There is a drastic elevation in the levels of estimated parameters as their levels were increased as long as the severity of the disease increased.Conclusions: The diagnosis of FMF cannot be performed on the basis of genetic testing or clinical criteria alone. So, we recommended the combination between clinical and molecular profiling for FMF diagnosis and scoring

    The world’s agricultural needs are growing with the pace of increase in its population. Agricultural farmers play a vital role in our society by helping us in fulfilling our basic food needs. So, we need to support farmers to keep up their great work, even in difficult times such as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, which causes hard regulations like lockdowns, curfews, and social distancing procedures. In this article, we propose the development of a recommender system that assists in giving advice, support, and solutions for the farmers’ agricultural related complaints (or queries). The proposed system is based on the latent semantic analysis (LSA) approach to find the key semantic features of words used in agricultural complaints and their solutions. Further, it proposes to use the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm with Hadoop to classify the large agriculture dataset over Map/Reduce framework. The results show that a semantic-based classification system and filtering methods can improve the recommender system. Our proposed system outperformed the existing interest recommendation models with an accuracy of 87%

Despite advances in medical treatment, CAD is still associated with high morbidity, mortality, high hospitalization rates. Patients with CAD require comprehensive rehabilitation to control symptoms, slow the progressive nature of condition, decrease re hospitalization, and improve survival. To achieve these outcomes, patient adherence to prescribed medications is vital whereas Poor adherence to the long-term treatment of chronic diseases has been a growing problem and a major challenge for health care professionals. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of The Chronic ِ Disease Self Management Rehabilitation Programs and Tele- health in cardiac patients undergone Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABGS), in order to improve, enhance and maintain their adherence by increasing the efficacy during intervention sessions.MethodA total of 300 patients, were recruited through Tehran Heart Center's cardiac rehabilitation clinic. They were randomly assigned to intervention group which received 6 sessions (each session 150 minutes in a week) of psycho-educational intervention (N=150), or to a control group which received no intervention (N=150). The patients in both groups completed pretest measures consisting of General Adherence Scale (GAS), Specific Adherence Scale (SAS) and Cardiac Self Efficacy Questionnaire (CSEQ). Participants were reassessed 2-months and 3- months later.ResultMultiple regression analysis of the collected data, revealed that both after 2 and 3 months, by enrolling the CDSMRP and Tele-health in the intervention group, enhanced significantly adherence through enhanced self efficacy.ConclusionThe CDSMRP and Tele-health, improved the self efficacy of cardiac patients which then enhanced and maintained their adherence

Despite the expense associated with rehabilitation following chronic disease, dissatisfaction with psychosocial outcomes is common.     The effect of Cyclophosphamide on spermatogenesis in rats

    This study aimed to evaluate the effects of cyclophosphamide on spermatogenesis; we used three doses with variable time interval to determine the effect of the low and high doses of cyclophosphamide. The results showed that low doses for long time interval caused a considerable increase in the percentage of sperm head abnormalities (Tertatospermia), without any significant changes in tissue sections, the percentage of sperm head abnormalities was increased to 20.72% with the dose 5mg/Kg, while high doses caused a significant tissue changes in testes, and epididymis as well as head sperm abnormalities but less than the 5mg/Kg dose. The percentage of head sperm abnormalities were 14.75 and 13.19 for the doses 15mg/Kg and 10mg/Kg respectively

    Wound healing and antioxidant properties of <i>Launaea procumbens</i> supported by metabolomic profiling and molecular docking

    Wounds adversely affect people’s quality of life and have psychological, social, and economic impacts. Herbal remedies of Launaea procumbens (LP) are used to treat wounds. In an excision wound model, topical application of LP significantly promoted wound closure (on day 14, LP-treated animals had the highest percentages of wound closure in comparison with the other groups, as the wound was entirely closed with a closure percentage of 100%, p < 0.05). Histological analysis revealed a considerable rise in the number of fibroblasts, the amount of collagen, and its cross-linking in LP-treated wounds. Gene expression patterns showed significant elevation of TGF-β levels (2.1-fold change after 7 days treatment and 2.7-fold change in 14 days treatment) and downregulation of the inflammatory TNF-α and IL-1β levels in LP-treated wounds. Regarding in vitro antioxidant activity, LP extract significantly diminished the formation of H(2)O(2) radical (IC(50) = 171.6 μg/mL) and scavenged the superoxide radical (IC(50) of 286.7 µg/mL), indicating antioxidant potential in a dose-dependent manner. Dereplication of the secondary metabolites using LC-HRMS resulted in the annotation of 16 metabolites. The identified compounds were docked against important wound-healing targets, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), collagen α-1, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). Among dereplicated compounds, luteolin 8-C-glucoside (orientin) demonstrated binding potential to four investigated targets (VEGF, interleukin 1β, TNF-α, and collagen α-1). To conclude, Launaea procumbens extract could be regarded as a promising topical therapy to promote wound healing in excisional wounds, and luteolin 8-C-glucoside (orientin), one of its constituents, is a potential wound-healing drug lead
