Investigation of genetic variability related to the in vitro floral hermaphrodism induction in Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.)
This paper reports on a molecular analysis study conducted on Date palm flowers from the Deglet Nour cultivar to investigate putative genetic variability related to the in vitro floral hermaphrodism induction. Natural male and female as well as hermaphrodite ones that were produced in vitro through the hormonal treatment of female flowers were submitted to ISSR-PCR analysis. Microsatellite based amplification (ISSR) was applied on genomic DNA from inflorescences taken at different periods of hormonal treatment corresponding to the various deviation stages to search for putative variations that may have occurred on the initial genome due to the application of plant growth regulators. Several amplification bands were purified, cloned, and sequenced. The results revealed that hormonal treatment entailed no detectable genetic variation in the treated Date palm flowers. Two of the selected and ISSR-PCR amplified DNA fragments showed however, possible links with flowering regulation. The findings indicate that these sequences are potential candidate gene markers that may enhance our understanding of flower development and sex identification in this species.Key words: Date palm, female inflorescences, hermaphrodite flowers, in vitro culture, ISSR, sex identification
Les pseudo nodules thyroidiens
Buts : Rappeler les particularités cliniques et paracliniques des différentes étiologies des pseudonodules thyroïdiens et discuter les moyens de diagnostic positif et de prise en charge thérapeutique.Matériels et méthodes : il s'agit de 5 observations de patientes porteuses de pseudo-nodules thyroïdiens colligées au service d'oRL et de CCF du ChU Farhat hached de Sousse. L'âge variait entre 21 et 52 ans. dans tous les cas, le motif de consultation était une tuméfaction basicervicale associée à des signes de compression (dysphagie, dyspnée et/ou dysphonie). Une échographie et une scintigraphie thyroïdiennes ont été réalisées dans tous les cas. La cytoponction n'a été pratiquée que dans trois cas.Résultats : La tuméfaction basicervicale était mobile à la déglutition dans tous les cas. L'échographie et la scintigraphie ont évoqué une lésion thyroïdienne dans tous les cas. La cytoponction n'a été contributive dans aucun des trois cas. Après cervicotomie exploratrice et étude histologique, le diagnostic était, selon les cas, un kyste hydatique, un schwannome,un adénome parathyroïdien, un kyste du tractus thyréoglosse et un chondrosarcome cricoïdien.Conclusion: Les pseudo- nodules thyroïdiens sont des nodules cervicaux péri-thyroïdiens qui constituent des situations cliniques exceptionnelles voire anecdotiques que le chirurgien doit savoir évoquer. L'examen cytologique fait par une personne entraînée peut être contributif au diagnostic différentiel. Améloblastome mandibulaire place de la radiothérapie
L’améloblastome est la tumeur odontogénique la plus fréquente. il représente 1% des tumeurs mandibulaires et maxillaires et atteint la mandibule dans 80% des cas. Son traitement se base essentiellement sur la chirurgie lorsque cela est possible. La radiothérapie est réservée aux formes inopérables localement évoluées et métastatiques. Les auteurs rapportent le cas d’un patient présentant un améloblastome mandibulaire kystique traité par radiothérapie exclusive.Mots clés: Améloblastome, mandibule, radiothérapi
Les lymphomes de l’anneau de Waldeyer traitement et pronostic
Les lymphomes non Hodgkiniens (LNH) qui prennent naissance au niveau de l’anneau de Waldeyer constituent une entité bien particulière tant sur le plan clinique, thérapeutique que pronostique. Les auteurs rapportent une étude rétrospective de 44 observations de LNH de l’anneau de Waldeyer colligées entre 1995 et 2002. Une chimiothérapie exclusive aété indiquée chez 80,6% des malades et une association chimio-radiothérapie a été réalisée chez 19,4%. Le taux de survie globale était de 42% à 5 ans. Dans notre étude quatre facteurs de mauvais pronostic ont été individualisés : un âge ≥ à 40 ans, les stades d’Ann Arbor II, III et IV, un taux de LDH ≥ 1,5 fois la normale et la survenue de rechute.Mots-clés : Lymphome, anneau de Waldeyer, chimiothérapie, radiothérapie, pronosti
Investigation of Antimicrobial Activity and Statistical Optimization of Bacillus subtilis SPB1 Biosurfactant Production in Solid-State Fermentation
During the last years, several applications of biosurfactants with medical purposes have been reported. Biosurfactants are considered relevant molecules for applications in combating many diseases. However, their use is currently extremely limited due to their high cost in relation to that of chemical surfactants. Use of inexpensive substrates can drastically decrease its production cost. Here, twelve solid substrates were screened for the production of Bacillus subtilis SPB1 biosurfactant and the maximum yield was found with millet. A Plackett-Burman design was then used to evaluate the effects of five variables (temperature, moisture, initial pH, inoculum age, and inoculum size). Statistical analyses showed that temperature, inoculum age, and moisture content had significantly positive effect on SPB1 biosurfactant production. Their values were further optimized using a central composite design and a response surface methodology. The optimal conditions of temperature, inoculum age, and moisture content obtained under the conditions of study were 37 • C, 14 h, and 88%, respectively. The evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of this compound was carried out against 11 bacteria and 8 fungi. The results demonstrated that this biosurfactant exhibited an important antimicrobial activity against microorganisms with multidrug-resistant profiles. Its activity was very effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus xylosus, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumonia, and so forth
Design and analysis of vibration energy harvesters based on peak response statistics
Energy harvesting using cantilever piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters excited by Gaussian broadband random base excitation is considered. The optimal design and analysis of energy harvesters under random excitation is normally performed using the mean and standard deviation of a response quantity of interest, such as the voltage. An alternative approach based on the statistics of the peak voltage is developed in this paper. Three extreme response characteristics, namely (a) level crossing, (b) response peaks above certain level, and (c) fractional time spend above a certain level, have been employed. Two cases, namely the harvesting circuit with and without an inductor, have been considered. Exact closed-form expressions have been derived for number of level crossings, statistics of response peaks and fractional time spend above a certain level for the output voltage. It is shown that these quantities can be related to the standard deviation of the voltage and its derivative with respect to time. Direct numerical simulation has been used to validate the analytical expressions. Based on the analytical results, closed-form expressions for optimal system parameters have been proposed. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the applicability of the analytical results
Design, analysis, and feedback control of a nonlinear micro-piezoelectric–electrostatic energy harvester
A nonlinear micro-piezoelectric–electrostatic energy harvester is designed and studied using mathematical and computational methods. The system consists of a cantilever beam substrate, a bimorph piezoelectric transducer, a pair of tuning parallel-plate capacitors, and a tip–mass. The governing nonlinear mathematical model of the electro-mechanical system including nonlinear material and quadratic air-damping is derived for the series connection of the piezoelectric layers. The static and modal frequency curves are computed to optimize the operating point, and a parametric study is performed using numerical methods. A bias DC voltage is used to adapt the system to resonate with respect to the frequency of external vibration. Furthermore, to improve the bandwidth and performance of the harvester (and achieve a high level of harvested power without sacrificing the bandwidth), a nonlinear feedback loop is integrated into the design
Electromechanical analysis of an adaptive piezoelectric energy harvester controlled by two segmented electrodes with shunt circuit networks
This paper presents an adaptive power harvester using a shunted piezoelectric control system with segmented electrodes. This technique has spurred new capability for widening the three simultaneous resonance frequency peaks using only a single piezoelectric laminated beam where normally previous works only provide a single peak for the resonance at the first mode. The benefit of the proposed techniques is that it provides effective and robust broadband power generation for application in self-powered wireless sensor devices. The smart structure beam with proof mass offset is considered to have simultaneous combination between vibration-based power harvesting and shunt circuit control-based electrode segments. As a result, the system spurs new development of the two mathematical methods using electromechanical closed-boundary value techniques and Ritz method-based weak-form analytical approach. The two methods have been used for comparison giving accurate results. For different electrode lengths using certain parametric tuning and harvesting circuit systems, the technique enables the prediction of the power harvesting that can be further proved to identify the performance of the system using the effect of varying circuit parameters so as to visualize the frequency and time waveform responses
