This study provides a synopsis of the current fieldwork monitoring practices of large-scale surveys in Germany. Based on the results of a standardized questionnaire, the study summarizes fieldwork monitoring indicators used and fieldwork measures carried out by 17 large-scale social sciences surveys in Germany. Our descriptive results reveal that a common set of fieldwork indicators and measures exist on which the studied surveys rely. However, it also uncovers the need for additional design-specific indicators. Finally, it underlines the importance of a close cooperation between survey representatives and fieldwork agencies to optimize processes in fieldwork monitoring in the German survey context. The article concludes with implications for fieldwork practice

Upgrade of the UNILAC for FAIR

The UNIversal Linear Accelerator (UNILAC) at GSI has served as injector for all ion species from protons for uranium for the past four decades. In order to meet the requirements for the upcoming FAIR project the machine has to be revised. A dedicated uranium source branch is under design. It has to provide up to 20 emA of 238U⁴⁺ at 2.2 keV/u to the entrance of the RFQ. The latter needs to be re-designed aiming at lower electric surface fields for sparking mitigation. The operational flexibility of the subsequent MEBT will be enhanced. We report on recent achievements on enhancing the stripping efficiency from U⁴⁺ to U²⁸⁺ by employing a pulsed jet of hydrogen gas. The stripper section may also include an option to provide a round-to-flat adapter shrinking the horizontal emittance at the expense of the vertical one. The existing post-stripper DTL is in operation since 40 years and will be fully re-designed. An optimized drift tube shape increases the shunt impedance, varying stem orientations shall mitigate parasite rf-modes, and asymetric and enhanced quadrupole focusing will preserve the beam flatness. The contribution will describe the various upgrade measures

Upgrade of the Universal Linear Accelerator UNILAC for FAIR

In order to meet the requirements on beam parameters for the upcoming FAIR facility at GSI, the injector linac UNILAC will be upgraded. The activities comprise development of the sources for stable provision of intense uranium beams at a repetition rate of 2.7 Hz, a revision of the beam dynamics layout of the 120 keV/u RFQ, the replacement of the matching section to the 1.4 MeV/u pre-stripper DTL, and enhancement of the gaseous stripping section efficiency. This section shall also include a round-to-flat emittance adaptor to prepare the beam for injection into the synchrotron SIS18 which has a flat transverse injection acceptance. Finally, the upgrade includes the complete replacement of the 40 year old 11.4 MeV/u Alvarez-type post-stripper DTL with a new DTL, preferably using Alvarez-type cavities with improved beam focusing features, as well as its rf-power alimentations
