Regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor-A and its soluble receptor sFlt-1 by luteinizing hormone in vivo: implication for ovarian follicle angiogenesis
Objective: To determine in vivo whether LH supplementation during the late follicular phase induces ovarian follicle angiogenesis in humans, as reflected by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, its soluble receptor sFlt-1, and placental growth factor (PlGF) expression. Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Setting: Academic tertiary care medical center. Patient(s): Twenty infertile, healthy women (aged 18-39 years) undergoing IVF. Intervention(s): Administration of recombinant FSH after down-regulation and equal randomization of subjects to receive recombinant LH 75 IU/day or placebo when two or more follicles reached a mean diameter of 14 mm
Digitise This! A Quick and Easy Remote Sensing Method to Monitor the Daily Extent of Dredge Plumes
Technological advancements in remote sensing and GIS have improved natural resource managersâ abilities to monitor large-scale disturbances. In a time where many processes are heading towards automation, this study has regressed to simple techniques to bridge a gap found in the advancement of technology. The near-daily monitoring of dredge plume extent is common practice using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery and associated algorithms to predict the total suspended solids (TSS) concentration in the surface waters originating from floods and dredge plumes. Unfortunately, these methods cannot determine the difference between dredge plume and benthic features in shallow, clear water. This case study at Barrow Island, Western Australia, uses hand digitising to demonstrate the ability of human interpretation to determine this difference with a level of confidence and compares the method to contemporary TSS methods. Hand digitising was quick, cheap and required very little training of staff to complete. Results of ANOSIM R statistics show remote sensing derived TSS provided similar spatial results if they were thresholded to at least 3 mg L-1. However, remote sensing derived TSS consistently provided false-positive readings of shallow benthic features as Plume with a threshold up to TSS of 6 mg L-1, and began providing false-negatives (excluding actual plume) at a threshold as low as 4 mg L-1. Semi-automated processes that estimate plume concentration and distinguish between plumes and shallow benthic features without the arbitrary nature of human interpretation would be preferred as a plume monitoring method. However, at this stage, the hand digitising method is very useful and is more accurate at determining plume boundaries over shallow benthic features and is accessible to all levels of management with basic training
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space

Solving Quantitative Reasoning Problems with Language Models
Language models have achieved remarkable performance on a wide range of tasks
that require natural language understanding. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art
models have generally struggled with tasks that require quantitative reasoning,
such as solving mathematics, science, and engineering problems at the college
level. To help close this gap, we introduce Minerva, a large language model
pretrained on general natural language data and further trained on technical
content. The model achieves state-of-the-art performance on technical
benchmarks without the use of external tools. We also evaluate our model on
over two hundred undergraduate-level problems in physics, biology, chemistry,
economics, and other sciences that require quantitative reasoning, and find
that the model can correctly answer nearly a third of them.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures + references and appendice
Multi-centre Phase II trial of the polyamine synthesis inhibitor SAM486A (CGP48664) in patients with metastatic melanoma
Purpose: To determine the activity and tolerability of SAM496A, an inhibitor of S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC), in patients with metastatic melanoma who had not received prior chemotherapy. Selected patients were offered participation in two sub-studies examining early changes in tumor metabolism with FDG-PET and changes in tumor polyamine content. Patients and methods: Fifteen patients with measurable metastatic melanoma, normal cardiac function, and no known CNS metastases were eligible and received SAM486A by 1-hour IV infusion daily for 5 days every 3 weeks. Response was assessed by SWOG criteria. Results: No patient had a confirmed partial response. Fatigue/lethargy, myalgia and neutropenia were the main toxicities but no febrile neutropenia or grade 4 non-hematological toxicity occurred. Five patients had PET scans pre-treatment and on days 8-12 of cycle 1. No patient had reduction of tumor metabolism. Serial biopsy in one patient showed alterations in polyamines consistent with SAMDC inhibition. Conclusions: Using the present dose and schedule of administration, SAM486A does not have significant therapeutic potential in patients with metastatic melanoma
Further support for an association between a polymorphic CAG repeat in the hKCa3 gene and schizophrenia
A recent study has suggested that a polymorphism in the hKCa3 potassium channel may be associated with raised susceptibility to schizophrenia. Despite its modest statistical significance, the study is intriguing for two reasons. First, hKCa3 contains a polymorphic CAG repeat in its coding sequence, with large repeats more common in schizophrenics compared with controls. This is interesting in view of several repeat expansion detection (RED) studies that have reported an excess of large CAG repeats in psychotic probands. Second, the hKCa3 gene is a functional candidate gene because studies of antipsychotic and psychotogenic compounds suggest that glutamatergic systems modulated by SKCa channels may be important in schizophrenia pathogenesis. In the light of the above, we have tested the hypothesis of an association between schizophrenia and the hKCa3 CAG repeat polymorphism using a case control study design. Under the same model of analysis as the earlier study, schizophrenic probands had a higher frequency of alleles with greater than 19 repeats than controls (chi 2 = 2.820, P = 0.047, 1-tail). Our data therefore provide modest support for the hypothesis that polymorphism in the hKCa3 gene may contribute to susceptibility to schizophrenia
