Death and the Societies of Late Antiquity
This bilingual volume proposes to draw up an assessment of the recent research conducted on funerary behavior during Late Antiquity in the provinces of the Roman Empire and on their borders, in order to open new perspectives on its possible developments. The considerable transformations of the methodologies have raised the need for a renewal of the questions on the funerary practices during Late Antiquity, a period marked by multiple political, social, demographic and cultural changes. The emergence field anthropology, which was the beginning of archaeothanatology, and then the recent development of collaborative approaches between various scientific fields (archaeothanatology, biochemistry and geochemistry, genetics, history, epigraphy, for example), have been decisive. The research collected in this book is structured around four main themes: Evolution of funerary practices over time; Social identity through death; Changing burial grounds (organisation and topography); Territories of the Empire (from the heart to the margins). These studies propose a review and a revision of the data, both anthropological and archaeological or historical on Late Antiquity, and reveal a mosaic of political, social, and cultural landscapes singularly rich and complex. In doing so, they demonstrate that we can truly understand the cultural and social structures of ancient communities and their potential transformations, based on the study of funerary practices

Diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms: accuracy of MR angiography at 0.5 T.
PURPOSE: Our goal was to determine the accuracy of MR angiography at 0.5 T for the diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 140 patients, 70 with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage, who were either at high or low risk for intracranial aneurysm. Three-dimensional time-of-flight MR angiography was typically performed to cover the circle of Willis, with a volume thickness of 30 mm. Conventional spin-echo MR images and MR angiograms were reviewed together, and the results were compared with those obtained at intraarterial cerebral angiography to determine the sensitivity and specificity of MR angiography. RESULTS: Eighty-nine aneurysms (size range, 2 to 27 mm; 25 aneurysms < 5 mm) were identified at intraarterial cerebral angiography. Six aneurysms were missed by MR angiography and two were doubtful (sensitivity, 91% to 93%; specificity, 100%). Missed aneurysms were located outside the MR angiographic acquisition volume (n = 3) or on the carotid siphon (n = 3; size = 2, 3, and 5 mm). CONCLUSION: Even if MR angiography presents some restrictions in acquisition volume and spatial resolution, the detection rate of intracranial aneurysms is excellent at 0.5 T in both asymptomatic patients and in those with subarachnoid hemorrhage. A midfield system is not a restriction to the detection of intracranial aneurysms by MR examination
An old dissecting aneurysm of the internal carotid artery presenting as acute stroke.
BACKGROUND: In carotid artery dissections, local and ischemic manifestations usually occur within days or weeks. In some cases, persistent extracranial aneurysms cause thromboembolic complications even years after the initial event. The management of these aneurysms is still controversial. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 74 year old woman with a stroke due to a long standing giant dissecting aneurysm of the internal carotid artery. Medical management was insufficient to stop ongoing embolization. She was finally successfully treated with stenting. CONCLUSION: Carotid artery aneurysms can become symptomatic even after many years of silence. Once medical therapy fails, endovascular treatment can avoid recurrent embolization
Lateral sacral artery aneurysm: case report and review of the literature.
We report the third case of an aneurysm of the lateral sacral artery (AnLSA). In all cases, because of an incorrect preoperative diagnosis, the surgeons were confronted with severe and unexpected hemorrhaging, and surgery was aborted without effective treatment. Our purpose is to present the preoperative features of AnLSA and its treatment modalities.Case ReportsJournal ArticleReviewinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Severe hypoplasia of the abdominal aorta and its branches in a patient and his daughter.
We report the history of a patient and his daughter, both affected with hypoplasia of the abdominal aorta and its branches, leading to early and dramatic complications. In the index patient, renal ischaemia as a result of severe hypoplasia of the abdominal aorta and the origin of renal arteries led to progressive renal failure and end-stage renal disease at the age of 32 years. Other vascular abnormalities included hypoplasia of the celiac trunk (CT) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA). After a successful kidney transplantation at the age of 40 years, he eventually deceased following an episode of possibly ischaemic acute pancreatitis at 47 years. The patient's daughter suffered from an haemorrhagic stroke at the age of 7 years, which led to the discovery of severe hypertension caused by bilateral narrowing of renal arteries, as well as hypoplasia of CT, SMA, subclavian and pulmonary arteries. Biopsy of the narrowed renal artery of the daughter showed a particular form of fibrodysplasia characterized by an unusual fibrosis of the inner part of the media, just beneath the internal elastic lamina. To our knowledge, this is the first report of familial hypoplasia of the abdominal aorta. It might be the cardinal manifestation of a familial form of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). Interestingly, the histological lesions described in the daughter's renal artery differ from the classical form of medial FMD
