    In the field of information retrieval (hereinafter, RI), there is an increasing development of (monolingual and multilingual) documentary and computer tools that can substantially help specialists in their work -in addition to being useful for other users with diverse information needs-. more diverse-. The development of multilingual tools is still evolving and several years of studies and research are still needed in order for it to improve and develop. One of the main problems faced by these tools is translation (Diekema, 2003), both of queries entered by users and of documentary sources that respond to them. Therefore, in view of RI's growing research, development and creation of multilingual systems, we deem it necessary to conduct a study that focuses on the analysis and evaluation of the resources used by one type of these systems, such as multilingual question-answering systems (hereinafter, QA)

    The development of the Semantic Web requires great economic and human effort. Consequently, it is very useful to create mechanisms and tools that facilitate its expansion. From the standpoint of information retrieval (hereafter IR), access to the contents of the Semantic Web can be favored by the use of natural language, as it is much simpler and faster for the user to engage in his habitual form of expression. The growing popularity of Internet and the wide availability of web informative resources for general audiences are a fairly recent phenomenon, although man´s need to hurdle the language barrier and communicate with others is as old as the history of mankind. The World Wide Web, also known as WWW, together with the growing globalization of companies and organizations, and the increase of the non-English speaking audience, entails the demand for tools allowing users to secure information from a wide range of resources. Yet the underlying linguistic restrictions are often overlooked by researchers and designers. Against this background, a key characteristic to be evaluated in terms of the efficiency of IR systems is its capacity to allow users find a corpus of documents in different languages, and to facilitate the relevant information despite limited linguistic competence regarding the target language

    Innovación en la formación universitaria desde una perspectiva profesional e interdisciplinar: Procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la Traducción

    Las exigencias que se han generado en el contexto de la sociedad de la información han obligado a docentes e investigadores a ser impulsores de la revolución que ha supuesto la incorporación de las nuevas tecnologías a todos los ámbitos de la vida, y a la sistematización de su uso para la consecución de objetivos académicos y profesionales. Nuestra propuesta, planteada por un equipo de docentes e investigadores del ámbito de la traducción y la interpretación, se centra en la investigación e innovación docentes, y en la incorporación de las TIC a los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Presentamos un modelo didáctico adaptado, denominado MPDT (Modelo Profesional para la Didáctica de la Traducción), así como diversas herramientas y recursos generados y/o aplicados a la formación en traducción. Esta nueva vía metodológica, sustentada en el aprendizaje basado en proyectos y en el aprendizaje cooperativo, pretende acercarse al mundo empresarial de la traducción a través de una simulación de trabajo en equipo como si se tratase de un encargo real, vinculándose así a los estudios de caso que realizan numerosas empresas para la formación de sus empleados. Todas nuestras propuestas docentes se centran en potenciar la transversal relación entre diferentes materias implicadas en la formación en traducción. Una de nuestras prioridades se centra en analizar la incidencia de nuestros métodos didácticos y de la aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías en el ámbito de los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la traducción. Para ello, se han diseñado, desarrollado y aplicado diferentes herramientas de evaluación de la experiencia como análisis mediante cuestionarios, análisis de ficheros log, evaluación por pares, autoevaluación y evaluación por equipos de trabajo

    Multilingual Question-Answering System in Biomedical Domain on the Web: An Evaluation

    Question-answering systems (QAS) are presented as an alternative to traditional systems of information retrieval, intended to offer precise responses to factual questions. An analysis has been made of the results offered by the QA multilingual biomedical system HONqa, available on the Web. The study has used a set of 120 biomedical definitional questions (What is...?), taken from the medical website WebMD, which were formulated in English, French, and Italian. The answers have been analysed using a serie of specific measures (MRR, TRR, FHS, precision, MAP). The study confirms that for all the languages analysed the functioning effectiveness needs to be improved, although in the multilingual context analysed the questions in the English language achieve better results for retrieving definitional information than in French and Italian

    Question Answering Systems (hereinafter QA systems) stand as a new alternative for Information Retrieval Systems. We conducted a study to evaluate the efficiency of QA systems as terminological sources for physicians, specialized translators, and users in general. To this end we analysed the performance of two open-domain and two restricted domain QA systems. The research entailed a collection of one hundred fifty definitional questions from WebMed. We studied the sources that QA systems used to retrieve the answers, and later applied a range of evaluation measures to mark the quality of answers. Through analysing the results obtained by asking the 150 questions in the QA systems MedQA, START, QuALiM and HONqa, it was possible to evaluate the systems’ operation through applying specific metrics. Despite the limitations demonstrated by these systems, as they are not accessible to everyone and they are not always completely developed, it has been confirmed that these four QA systems are valid and useful for obtaining definitional medical information in that they offer coherent and precise answers. The results are encouraging because they present this type of tool as a new possibility for gathering precise, reliable and specific information in a short period of time

    Institutional information websites and the presence on social networks of Andalusian heritage

    Recent studies by the Spanish Tourism Institute points to the internet as a "clear driver of the sector" and as a potential source for promoting and selling regional heritage. However, the advantages that the Web and various Web 2.0 tools offer have not been exploited by a large number of buildings in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, and its presence on the networks is rather scarce. Bearing in mind that the Web 2.0 helps disseminate information amongst an ever-growing audience, this paper aims to identify and evaluate the specific 2.0 tools that the organisms responsible use to promote buildings included in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. To do so, the presence on the internet and the main social networks (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channel) of each of the 3913 catalogued buildings were identified, analysed and categorised. The results show that there is still a long way to go. In the majority of cases, the information regarding the various buildings published on these media is limited to a small description of it on the tourism page of the corresponding Provincial Council for the municipality or, in the majority of cases, of the City Council itself. Those that have their own website account for a negligible number of the buildings. Furthermore, as regards social networks, the buildings analysed are in an even worse situation, with a very low percentage that have an up-to-date and active profile on these networks. The presence of these resources in English and French was also analysed, and the figures are astonishingly low.This research has been carried out within the framework of the project HAR2012-38562 Platform of Analysis and Access to multilingual web information about the historic and cultural building and sites of Spain, financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness

    Web Localization as an Essential Factor in the Internationalisation of Companies: An Approximation of Spanish SMEs

    Constant changes in the economic environment, where globalisation and the development of the knowledge economy act as drivers, are systematically pushing companies towards the challenge of accessing external markets. Web localization constitutes a new field of study and professional intervention. From the translation perspective, localization equates to the website being adjusted to the typological, discursive and genre conventions of the target culture, adapting that website to a different language and culture. This entails much more than simply translating the content of the pages. The content of a webpage is made up of text, images and other multimedia elements, all of which have to be translated and subjected to cultural adaptation. The user must never notice that the site was originally created in another language.
