    Spectrum-aware data replication in intermittently connected cognitive radio networks

    Abstract—The opening of under-utilized spectrum creates an opportunity for unlicensed users to achieve substantial per-formance improvement through cognitive radio techniques. In cognitive radio ad-hoc networks, with node mobility and low node density, the network topology is highly dynamic and end-to-end connection is hard to maintain. We propose data replication techniques to address these problems and improve data access performance in such intermittently connected cognitive radio network. Although data replication has been extensively studied in traditional disruption tolerant networks, existing techniques cannot be directly applied here since they do not consider the effects of primary user appearance on data replication. In this paper, we formulate spectrum-aware data replication as an optimization problem which tries to maximize the average data retrieval probability, subject to storage and time constraints. Since the problem is hard to solve based on mixed integer programming, we further design a distributed replication scheme based on the metric of replication benefit. Extensive simulations based on synthetic and realistic traces show that our scheme out-performs existing schemes in terms of data retrieval probability in various scenarios. I

    Plasmons in Pb nanowire arrays on Si(557): Between one and two dimensions

    The plasmon dispersion in arrays of nanowires of Pb close to an average Pb coverage of one monolayer was determined on the Si(557) surface using electron energy loss spectroscopy with both high energy and momentum resolution. While we find purely one-dimensional (1D) plasmon losses at a Pb concentration of 1.31 monolayers (ML), measured with respect to the Si(111) surface concentration, the 1.2 and 1.4 ML coverages exhibit wavelength-dependent transitions from 1D to anisotropic 2D properties. However, due to the high anisotropy in the system at all coverages, the dispersion curves exhibit 1D characteristics in both directions. This behavior seems to be related to the Pb-induced refacetting of the Si(557) surface, which depends on Pb coverage.     Expression of peroxiredoxins in the human testis, epididymis and spermatozoa and their role in preventing H2O2-induced damage to spermatozoa

    Introduction. High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have potential toxic effects on testicular function and sperm quality. Peroxiredoxins (PRDXs) are enzymes with a role as ROS scavenger. The aim of the study was to reveal the presence and localization of PRDXs in human testis, epididymis and spermatozoa, and the protective roles of PRDX2 and PRDX6 in sperm motility. Material and methods. The presence and localization of PRDXs in the human testis, epididymis and spermatozoa were detected by immunohistochemistry, western blot and immunofluorescence. The effect of anti-peroxidative damage to spermatozoa was examined by adding H2O2 to the recombinant protein-treated spermatozoa. Results. There were strong signals of PRDX1 in spermatogonia and round spermatids; PRDX2 in the round spermatids; PRDX4 and 5 in spermatogonia; PRDX6 in Sertoli cells. PRDXs were also found in epididymal epithelial cells where the expression of PRDX1, 4, 5, 6 in the cauda was higher than in the caput of epididymis. PRDX1-6 immunoreactivity was found throughout acrosome, post-acrosomal region, equatorial segment, neck and cytoplasmic droplet, midpiece and principal piece. The H2O2-induced reduction in sperm motility was reversed by recombinant PRDX2 or PRDX6 in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusions. PRDX1-6 in the human testis and epididymis presented cell-specificity.     Ultrafast spin polarization in a multiferroic manganite BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 thin film

    In this work, we present observations of ultrafast carrier dynamics and spin polarization in a multiferroic manganite BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 film excited by linearly and circularly polarized femtosecond pulses, respectively. The d-band charge transfer transition is reasonably assigned to Γ3 → Γ5. The transient reflectivity decay on a time scale as fast as only 0.3 ps is consistent with the picture of ultrafast electron-phonon coupling. The ultrafast switching of polarization ellipticity (\u3c 150 fs) originates from a transient coherent spin polarization by optical orientation. The ultrafast spin polarization switching is assigned to the Raman coherence process

    Joint 2D Direction-of-Arrival and Range Estimation for Nonstationary Sources

    Passive localization of nonstationary sources in the spherical coordinates (azimuth, elevation, and range) is considered, and a parallel factor analysis based method is addressed for the near-field parameter estimation problem. In this scheme, a parallel factor analysis model is firstly constructed by computing five time-frequency distribution matrices of the properly chosen observation data. In addition, the uniqueness of the constructed model is proved, and both the two-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) and range can be jointly obtained via trilinear alternating least squares regression (TALS). The investigated algorithm is well suitable for near-field nonstationary source localization and does not require parameter-pairing or multidimensional search. Several simulation examples confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm
