    The Real Scalar Field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter Spacetime

    In this paper, the real scalar field equation in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime is solved numerically with high precision. A method called polynomial approximation is introduced to derive the relation between the tortoise coordinate x and the radius r. This method is different from the tangent approximation [1] and leads to more accurate result. The Nariai black hole is then discussed in details. We find that the wave function is harmonic only near the horizons as I. Brevik and B. Simonsen [1] found. Howerver the wave function is not harmonic in the region of the potential peak, with amplitude increasing instead. Furthermore, we also find that, when cosmological constant decreases, the potential peak increases, and the maximum wave amplitude increases.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures.     Orbital-angular-momentum fluorescence emission based on photon–electron interaction in a vortex field of an active optical fiber

    We develop a model of interaction between photons and electrons in an active vortex field, which can generate a fluorescence spectrum with the characteristics of orbital angular momentum (OAM). In an active optical fiber, our findings generalize the notion of photon–electron interaction and point to a new kind of OAM-mode broad-spectrum light source, which could be interpreted in two processes: one microscopically is the excitation of OAM-carrying photons based on the photon–electron interaction; the other macroscopically is the emission and transmission of a donut-shaped fluorescence in a vortex field with a spiral phase wavefront in a ring-core active fiber. Here we present a straightforward experimental method that the emission of broad-spectrum fluorescence with an OAM feature is actualized and validated in a ring-core erbium-doped fiber. The spectrum has a broad spectral width up to 50 nm. Furthermore, four wavelengths are extracted from the fluorescence spectrum and superimposed with their corresponding Gaussian beams, from which the spiral-shaped interferograms of OAM modes in a broad spectrum are identified with high purity. The application of the OAM-based fluorescence light source may range from classical to quantum information technologies, and enable high-capacity communication, high-sensitivity sensing, high-resolution fluorescence imaging, etc

    Analysis of the efficacy and safety of inpatient and outpatient initiation of KD for the treatment of pediatric refractory epilepsy using generalized estimating equations

    ObjectiveTo compare the efficacy and safety of inpatient and outpatient initiation ketogenic diet (KD) protocol of pediatric refractory epilepsy.MethodsEligible children with refractory epilepsy were randomly assigned to receive KD with inpatient and outpatient initiation. The generalized estimation equation (GEE) model was used to analyze the longitudinal variables of seizure reduction, ketone body, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and BMI Z-score at different follow-up times between the two groups.ResultsBetween January 2013 and December 2021, 78 and 112 patients were assigned to outpatient and inpatient KD initiation groups, respectively. There were no statistical differences between the two groups based on baseline demographics and clinical characteristics (all Ps > 0.05). The GEE model indicated that the rate of reduction of seizures≥50% in the outpatient initiation group was higher than that of the inpatient initiation group (p = 0.049). A negative correlation was observed between the seizure reduction and blood ketone body at 1, 6, and 12 months (all Ps < 0.05). There were no significant differences in height, weight, BMI, and BMI Z-score between the two groups over the 12-month period by the GEE models (all Ps > 0.05). Adverse events were reported by 31 patients (43.05%) in the outpatient KD initiation group and 46 patients (42.20%) in the inpatient KD initiation group, but these differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.909).ConclusionOur study shows that outpatient KD initiation is a safe and effective treatment for children with refractory epilepsy

    Salp swarm optimization algorithm based MPPT design for PV-TEG hybrid system under partial shading conditions

    This paper proposes an innovative strategy to integrate thermoelectric generator (TEG) and photovoltaic (PV) systems, aiming to enhance energy production efficiency by addressing the significant waste heat generated during traditional PV system operation. Additionally, photovoltaic-thermoelectric generator (PV-TEG) hybrid system encounters the dual challenge of partial shading conditions (PSC) and non-uniform temperature distribution (NTD). Thus, salp swarm optimization (SSA) is introduced to simultaneously tackle the negative impacts of PSC and NTD. In contrast to alternative meta-heuristic algorithms (MhAs) and conventional mathematical approaches, the streamlined and effective optimization mechanism inherent to SSA affords a shorter optimization time, while mitigating the risk of the PV-TEG hybrid system's optimization outcomes being confined to local maximum power points (LMPP). Furthermore, the optimization performance of SSA for PV-TEG hybrid systems is assessed via four case studies, including start-up test, stepwise variations in solar irradiation at constant temperature, stochastic change in solar irradiation, and field measured data for typical days in Hong Kong, in which simulation results show that SSA evinces unparalleled global exploration and local search capabilities, yielding heightened energy output (up to 43.75%) and effectively suppressing power fluctuations in the PV-TEG hybrid system (as evidenced by ΔVavg and ΔVmax)

    Effects of ketogenic diet on the classification and functional composition of intestinal flora in children with mitochondrial epilepsy

    The ketogenic diet (KD) has shown excellent performance in the treatment of refractory epilepsy, but how it works is not yet fully understood. Gut microbiota is associated with various neurological disorders through the brain-gut axis. Different dietary patterns have different effects on the composition and function of gut microbiota. Here, by analyzing fecal samples from some patients with mitochondrial epilepsy before and after KD treatment through 16SrRNA sequencing, we found that KD intervention reduced the abundance of Firmicutes in the patient’s gut, while the abundance of Bacteroidota increased in the KD group. LefSe analysis showed that Actinobacteriota, Phascolarctobacterium had significant advantages in the control group, while Bacteroides increased significantly after KD intervention, especially Bacteroides fragilis. Functional analysis showed that there were significant differences in 12 pathways in level 3. These changes suggest that KD can change the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota in patients and affect their function. Changes in specific bacterial groups in the gut may serve as biomarkers for the therapeutic effects of KD on epilepsy

    Oral Delivery of the Sj23LHD-GST Antigen by Salmonella typhimurium Type III Secretion System Protects against Schistosoma japonicum Infection in Mice

    Schistosomiasis japonica is a zoonotic parasitic disease and occurs predominantly in Southeast Asia and China. Using a simple, cheap, yet efficient oral method to deliver the vaccine antigen would benefit to control its transmission in that the oral vaccine could be made into a preparation and mixed with feedstuffs of livestock hosts. In this study, we used an attenuated S. typhimurium strain VNP20009, whose safety has been demonstrated in phase I clinical trial, to express the bivalent Schistosoma japonicum antigen Sj23LHD-GST by an intracellular activated promoter (nirB) and deliver it to host cells through type III secretion system. After oral vaccination of this recombinant strain, efficient protection against S. japonicum challenge was induced in mice. Mean while, granuloma formation in the liver was improved significantly in the immunized mice. This protective immune response was Th1 specific type as evidenced by increase in the production of IL-12 and IFN-Îł. This work provides an alternative S. japonicum vaccine for livestock and humans

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Co-Regulations of Spartina alterniflora Invasion and Exogenous Nitrogen Loading on Soil N2O Efflux in Subtropical Mangrove Mesocosms

However, how N2O efflux in mangrove wetlands responds to these environmental changes has not been well studied. Here, we conducted a mesocosm experiment with native mangrove species Kandelia obovata, invasive salt marsh species Spartina alterniflora, and their mixture in a simulated tide rotation system with or without nitrogen addition. In the treatments without N addition, the N2O effluxes were relatively low and there were no significant variations among the three vegetation types. A pulse loading of exogenous ammonium nitrogen increased N2O effluxes from soils but the stimulatory effect gradually diminished over time, suggesting that frequent measurements are necessary to accurately understand the behavior of N-induced response of N2O emissions. With the N addition, the N2O effluxes from the invasive S. alterniflora were lower than that from native K. obovata mesocosms. This result may be attributed to higher growth of S. alterniflora consuming most of the available nitrogen in soils, and thus inhibiting N2O production. We concluded that N loading significantly increased N2O effluxes, while the invasion of S. alterniflora reduced N2O effluxes response to N loading in this simulated mangrove ecosystem. Thus, both plant invasion and excessive N loading can co-regulate soil N2O emissions from mangrove wetlands, which should be considered when projecting future N2O effluxes from this type of coastal wetland.Yeshttp://www.plosone.org/static/editorial#pee

To further standardize the MST therapy and improve outcomes in EAML patients, based on analysis of the literature on MST, especially MST with EAML from January 1st, 2011 to November 30th, 2022, the International Microtransplant Interest Group provides recommendations and considerations for MST in the treatment of EAML. Four major issues related to MST for treating EAML were addressed: therapeutic principle of MST (1), candidates for MST (2), induction chemotherapy regimens (3), and post-remission therapy based on MST (4).     Application of ultrasound to enhance the silt drying process: An experimental study.

    Scientific and reasonable treatment of dredged silt can not only protect the ecological environment but also play an essential role in the utilization of silt resources. Due to high water content, low permeability and high organic matter content of the silt, a large amount of bacteria and harmful gases are often produced during the process of silt sedimentation. Thermal drying has been taken as a technically attractive method for harmless treatment of contaminated dredged silt. In this study, ultrasound technology is introduced to shorten the time needed for silt drying. A preliminary laboratory study is carried out to assess the effectiveness of ultrasound on thermal drying. A series of thermal drying tests, with and without ultrasound, were conducted on kaolin soil specimens that were prepared by settling and self-weight consolidation. The test results show that the length of drying time can be shortened by increasing temperature and ultrasound power. The drying time plays a dominant role in the determination of the total energy consumption. This is because reduction of drying time leads to significant decrease in energy consumption for thermal drying, and the energy consumption for additional ultrasound is relatively marginal. For thermal drying at temperatures 60 and 100°C, when combined with 100 W ultrasound, the length of drying time was shortened by 44.19% and 45.16%, and the energy consumption was saved by 30.07% and 38.16%, respectively; when combined with 60 W ultrasound, the length of drying time was shortened by 4.65% and 6.45%, but the energy consumption was increased by 9.79% and 0.48%, respectively. The combination of thermal drying and 100 W ultrasound is found to be optimal in terms of drying rate and energy consumption for silt drying
