    Conventional chemical analysis techniques are expensive, time consuming, and often destructive. The non-invasive Near Infrared (NIR) technology was introduced over the last decades for wide-scale, inexpensive chemical analysis of food and crop seed composition (see Williams and Norris, 1987; Wilcox and Cavins, 1995; Buning and Diller, 2000 for reviews of the NIR technique development stage prior to 1998, when Diode Arrays were introduced to NIR). NIR spectroscopic measurements obey Lambert and Beer’s law, and quantitative measurements can be successfully made with high speed and ease of operation. NIR has been used in a great variety of food applications. General applications of products analyzed come from all sectors of the food industry including meats, grains, and dairy products (Shadow, 1998)

    Band structure of honeycomb photonic crystal slabs

    Two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb photonic crystals with cylinders and connecting walls have the potential to have a large full band gap. In experiments, 2D photonic crystals do not have an infinite height, and therefore, we investigate the effects of the thickness of the walls, the height of the slabs and the type of the substrates on the photonic bands and gap maps of 2D honeycomb photonic crystal slabs. The band structures are calculated by the plane wave expansion method and the supercell approach. We find that the slab thickness is a key parameter affecting the band gap size while on the other hand the wall thickness hardly affact the gap size. For symmetric photonic crystal slabs with lower dielectric claddings, the height of the slabs needs to be sufficiently large to maintain a band gap. For asymmetric claddings, the projected band diagrams are similar to that of symmetric slabs as long as the dielectric constants of the claddings do not differ greatly.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Applied Physic

    A generalized least-squares framework for rare-variant analysis in family data.

    Rare variants may, in part, explain some of the hereditability missing in current genome-wide association studies. Many gene-based rare-variant analysis approaches proposed in recent years are aimed at population-based samples, although analysis strategies for family-based samples are clearly warranted since the family-based design has the potential to enhance our ability to enrich for rare causal variants. We have recently developed the generalized least squares, sequence kernel association test, or GLS-SKAT, approach for the rare-variant analyses in family samples, in which the kinship matrix that was computed from the high dimension genetic data was used to decorrelate the family structure. We then applied the SKAT-O approach for gene-/region-based inference in the decorrelated data. In this study, we applied this GLS-SKAT method to the systolic blood pressure data in the simulated family sample distributed by the Genetic Analysis Workshop 18. We compared the GLS-SKAT approach to the rare-variant analysis approach implemented in family-based association test-v1 and demonstrated that the GLS-SKAT approach provides superior power and good control of type I error rate

    A solution of codimension 2 brane is found for which 4 dimensional Friedmann cosmology is recovered on the brane with time dependent tension, in the Einstein frame.     On the Cauchy problem for the magnetic Zakharov system

    In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the magnetic type Zakharov system which describes the pondermotive force and magnetic field generation effects resulting from the non-linear interaction between plasma-wave and particles. By using the energy method to derive a priori bounds and an approximation argument for the construction of solutions, we obtain local existence and uniqueness results for the magnetic Zakharov system in the case of d=2,3d=2,3
