Fake Supergravity and Domain Wall Stability

We review the generalized Witten-Nester spinor stability argument for flat domain wall solutions of gravitational theories. Neither the field theory nor the solution need be supersymmetric. Nor is the space-time dimension restricted. We develop the non-trivial extension required for AdS-sliced domain walls and apply this to show that the recently proposed "Janus" solution of Type IIB supergravity is stable non-perturbatively for a broad class of deformations. Generalizations of this solution to arbitrary dimension and a simple curious linear dilaton solution of Type IIB supergravity are byproducts of this work.Comment: 37 pages, 3 figures, v2: minor corrections, references and acknowledgments adde

Proteomic and Biological Analysis of the Effects of Metformin Senomorphics on the Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

Senotherapeutics are new drugs that can modulate senescence phenomena within tissues and reduce the onset of age-related pathologies. Senotherapeutics are divided into senolytics and senomorphics. The senolytics selectively kill senescent cells, while the senomorphics delay or block the onset of senescence. Metformin has been used to treat diabetes for several decades. Recently, it has been proposed that metformin may have anti-aging properties as it prevents DNA damage and inflammation. We evaluated the senomorphic effect of 6 weeks of therapeutic metformin treatment on the biology of human adipose mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). The study was combined with a proteome analysis of changes occurring in MSCs’ intracellular and secretome protein composition in order to identify molecular pathways associated with the observed biological phenomena. The metformin reduced the replicative senescence and cell death phenomena associated with prolonged in vitro cultivation. The continuous metformin supplementation delayed and/or reduced the impairment of MSC functions as evidenced by the presence of three specific pathways in metformin-treated samples: 1) the alpha-adrenergic signaling, which contributes to regulation of MSCs physiological secretory activity, 2) the signaling pathway associated with MSCs detoxification activity, and 3) the aspartate degradation pathway for optimal energy production. The senomorphic function of metformin seemed related to its reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity. In metformin-treated samples, the CEBPA, TP53 and USF1 transcription factors appeared to be involved in the regulation of several factors (SOD1, SOD2, CAT, GLRX, GSTP1) blocking ROS

Superconformal symmetry and maximal supergravity in various dimensions

In this paper we explore the relation between conformal superalgebras with 64 supercharges and maximal supergravity theories in three, four and six dimensions using twistorial oscillator techniques. The massless fields of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions were shown to fit into a CPT-self-conjugate doubleton supermultiplet of the conformal superalgebra SU(2,2|8) a long time ago. We show that the fields of maximal supergravity in three dimensions can similarly be fitted into the super singleton multiplet of the conformal superalgebra OSp(16|4,R), which is related to the doubleton supermultiplet of SU(2,2|8) by dimensional reduction. Moreover, we construct the ultra-short supermultiplet of the six-dimensional conformal superalgebra OSp(8*|8) and show that its component fields can be organized in an on-shell superfield. The ultra-short OSp(8*|8) multiplet reduces to the doubleton supermultiplet of SU(2,2|8) upon dimensional reduction. We discuss the possibility of a chiral maximal (4,0) six-dimensional supergravity theory with USp(8) R-symmetry that reduces to maximal supergravity in four dimensions and is different from six-dimensional (2,2) maximal supergravity, whose fields cannot be fitted into a unitary supermultiplet of a simple conformal superalgebra. Such an interacting theory would be the gravitational analog of the (2,0) theory.Comment: 54 pages, PDFLaTeX, Section 5 and several references added. Version accepted for publication in JHE

Explicit Character Formulae for Positive Energy UIRs of D=4 Conformal Supersymmetry

This paper continues the project of constructing the character formulae for the positive energy unitary irreducible representations of the N-extended D=4 conformal superalgebras su(2,2/N). In the first paper we gave the bare characters which represent the defining odd entries of the characters. Now we give the full explicit character formulae for N=1 and for several important examples for N=2 and N=4.Comment: 48 pages, TeX with Harvmac, overlap in preliminaries with arXiv:hep-th/0406154; some comments and references adde

    Superconformal field theories from IIB spectroscopy on AdS5Ă—T11AdS_5\times T^{11}

We report on tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence that are made possible by complete knowledge of the Kaluza-Klein mass spectrum of type IIB supergravity on AdS5Ă—T11AdS_5 \times T^{11} with T^{11}=SU(2)^2/U(1). After briefly discussing general multiplet shortening conditions in SU(2,2|1) and PSU(2,2|4), we compare various types of short SU(2,2|1) supermultiplets on AdS_5 and different families of boundary operators with protected dimensions. The supergravity analysis predicts the occurrence in the SCFT at leading order in N and g_s N, of extra towers of long multiplets whose dimensions are rational but not protected by supersymmetry.Comment: 11 pages, To appear in the proceedings of the STRINGS '99 conference, Potsdam (Germany), 19-25 July 199

Positive energy unitary irreducible representations of D=6 conformal supersymmetry

    Get PDF
We give a constructive classification of the positive energy (lowest weight) unitary irreducible representations of the D=6 superconformal algebras osp(8*/2N). Our results confirm all but one of the conjectures of Minwalla (for N=1,2) on this classification. Our main tool is the explicit construction of the norms of the states that has to be checked for positivity. We give also the reduction of the exceptional UIRs.Comment: 27 pages, TeX with harvmac, amssym.def, amssym.tex; v.2: minor corrections and references added; v.3: minor corrections; v.4: to appear in J. Correlation Functions of Operators and Wilson Surfaces in the d=6, (0,2) Theory in the Large N Limit

We compute the two and three-point correlation functions of chiral primary operators in the large N limit of the (0,2), d=6 superconformal theory. We also consider the operator product expansion of Wilson surfaces in the (0,2) theory and compute the OPE coefficients of the chiral primary operators at large N from the correlation functions of surfaces.Comment: 34 pages, using utarticle.cls (included), array.sty, amsmath.sty, amsfonts.sty, latexsym.sty, epsfig. Time-dependent backgrounds from supergravity with gauged non-compact R-symmetry

We obtain a general class of time-dependent, asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds which solve the first order bosonic equations that extremize the action for supergravity with gauged non-compact RR-symmetry. These backgrounds correspond only to neutral fields with the correct sign of kinetic energy. Within N=2 five-dimensional supergravity with vector-superfields we provide examples of multi-centered charged black holes in asymptotic de Sitter space, whose spatial part is given by a time-dependent hyper-K\"ahler space. Reducing these backgrounds to four dimensions yields asymptotically de Sitter multi-centered charged black hole backgrounds and we show that they are related to an instanton configuration by a massive T-duality over time. Within N=2 gauged supergravity in four (and five)-dimensions with hyper-multiplets there could also be neutral cosmological backgrounds that are regular and correspond to the different de Sitter spaces at early and late times.Comment: 28 pages, Latex; minor changes and add reference

A supersymmetric type IIB Randall–Sundrum realization

    Get PDF
We show that an earlier domain wall solution of type IIB supergravity provides a supersymmetric realization of the Randall–Sundrum brane-world, and give its ten-dimensional interpretation in terms of IIB 3-branes. We also explain how previous no-go theorems are circumvented. In particular, whereas D = 5D=5 supergravity scalars have AdS5AdS5 energy E0 ⩽ 4E0⩽4 and are unable to support a D = 5D=5 positive tension brane, our scalar has E0 = 8,E0=8, and is the breathing mode of the S5S5 compactification. Another essential element of the construction is the implementation of a Z2Z2 symmetry by patching together compactifications with opposite signs for their 5-form field strengths. This is thus a IIB analog of a previous D = 5D=5 3-brane realization of the Hořava–Witten orbifold. A mode-locking phenomenon avoids the appearance of negative energy zero-modes in spite of the necessity of a D = 10D=10 negative tension brane-source. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70278/2/JMAPAQ-42-7-3027-1.pd
