Massive scalar field near a cosmic string

The ζ\zeta function of a massive scalar field near a cosmic string is computed and then employed to find the vacuum fluctuation of the field. The vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor is also computed using a point-splitting approach. The obtained results could be useful also for the case of self-interacting scalar fields and for the finite-temperature Rindler space theory.Comment: 15 pages, standard LaTeX, no figures. Machine learning-driven approach for large scale decision making with the analytic hierarchy process

    Get PDF
The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) multicriteria method can be cognitively demanding for large-scale decision problems due to the requirement for the decision maker to make pairwise evaluations of all alternatives. To address this issue, this paper presents an interactive method that uses online learning to provide scalability for AHP. The proposed method involves a machine learning algorithm that learns the decision maker’s preferences through evaluations of small subsets of solutions, and guides the search for the optimal solution. The methodology was tested on four optimization problems with different surfaces to validate the results. We conducted a one factor at a time experimentation of each hyperparameter implemented, such as the number of alternatives to query the decision maker, the learner method, and the strategies for solution selection and recommendation. The results demonstrate that the model is able to learn the utility function that characterizes the decision maker in approximately 15 iterations with only a few comparisons, resulting in significant time and cognitive effort savings. The initial subset of solutions can be chosen randomly or from a cluster. The subsequent ones are recommended during the iterative process, with the best selection strategy depending on the problem type. Recommendation based solely on the smallest Euclidean or Cosine distances reveals better results on linear problems. The proposed methodology can also easily incorporate new parameters and multicriteria methods based on pairwise comparisons. This research was funded by National Funds through the FCT—Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, References UIDB/05256/2020 and UIDP/05256/2020

A monitoring method for the Low Voltage Power Supply modules of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter

    Get PDF
We present a method for testing the operational stability of Low Voltage Power Supply modules of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter, based on a self-consistent determination of the stability criteria. The recorded voltage, current, and temperature values of each module are retrieved from the Oracle database for a long and smooth running period and their mean and RMS values over that period are determined, as well as their average recording rates, by taking into account the â??smoothingâ?? procedure which is applied during data recording to reduce data storage. The average behavior of the ensemble of all modules is determined from those time-integrated quantities and the modules are then tested one-by-one by comparing with the ensemble averages. The proposed method is tested for all Long Barrel modules operated during April of 2007

Visual Binaries in the Orion Nebula Cluster

We have carried out a major survey for visual binaries towards the Orion Nebula Cluster using HST images obtained with an H-alpha filter. Among 781 likely ONC members more than 60" from theta-1 Ori C, we find 78 multiple systems (75 binaries and 3 triples), of which 55 are new discoveries, in the range from 0.1" to 1.5". About 9 binaries are likely line-of-sight associations. We find a binary fraction of 8.8%+-1.1% within the limited separation range from 67.5 to 675 AU. The field binary fraction in the same range is a factor 1.5 higher. Within the range 150 AU to 675 AU we find that T Tauri associations have a factor 2.2 more binaries than the ONC. The binary separation distribution function of the ONC shows unusual structure, with a sudden steep decrease in the number of binaries as the separation increases beyond 0.5", corresponding to 225 AU. We have measured the ratio of binaries wider than 0.5" to binaries closer than 0.5" as a function of distance from the Trapezium, and find that this ratio is significantly depressed in the inner region of the ONC. The deficit of wide binaries in the central part of the cluster is likely due to dissolution or orbital change during their passage through the potential well of the inner cluster region. Many of the companions are likely to be brown dwarfs.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by the Astronomical Journa

Determinação do ciclo estral em catetos Pecari tajacu: aspectos colpocitológicos e clínicos.

    Get PDF

Vacuum Polarization of a Charged Massless Scalar Field on Cosmic String Spacetime in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider a charged massless scalar quantum field operator in the spacetime of an idealized cosmic string, i.e., an infinitely long, straight and static cosmic string, which presents a magnetic field confined in a cylindrical tube of finite radius. Three distinct situations are taking into account in this analysis: {\it{i)}} a homogeneous field inside the tube, {\it{ii)}} a magnetic field proportional to 1/r1/r and {\it{iii)}} a cylindrical shell with δ\delta-function. In these three cases the axis of the infinitely long tube of radius RR coincides with the cosmic string. In order to study the vacuum polarization effects outside the tube, we explicitly calculate the Euclidean Green function associated with this system for the three above situations, considering points in the region outside the tube.Comment: 26 pages, LaTex format, 3 figure

Vacuum Polarization at Finite Temperature around a Magnetic Flux Cosmic String

We consider a general situation where a charged massive scalar field ϕ(x)\phi(x) at finite temperature interacts with a magnetic flux cosmic string. We determine a general expression for the Euclidean thermal Green's function of the massive scalar field and a handy expression for a massless scalar field. With this result, we evaluate the thermal average and the thermal average of the energy-momentum tensor of a nonconformal massless scalar field.Comment: 22 pages, latex, no figure
