Hepatitis A: At-Risk Populations
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is transmitted mostly through exposure to contaminated food or water, or through exposure to infected persons. This infection can occur sporadically or in an epidemic form, confers lifelong immunity and it is preventable by a safe and effective vaccine. Therefore, prevention strategies are crucial and could eradicate the infection if they were successfully employed. In this chapter, authors summarize mode of transmission and preventive measures for HAV among the following population groups: travellers, health care workers, men who have sex with men, individuals who use illicit drugs, sewage workers, food handlers, military personnel, prisoners, blood transfusions recipients, haemophiliacs and patients with HIV and chronic liver disease. Moreover, authors describe which of these groups are eligible for HAV vaccination according to available data
Ultralight boson cloud depletion in binary systems
Ultralight scalars can extract rotational energy from astrophysical black
holes through superradiant instabilities, forming macroscopic boson clouds.
This process is most efficient when the Compton wavelength of the boson is
comparable to the size of the black hole horizon, i.e. when the "gravitational
fine structure constant" . If the black
hole/cloud system is in a binary, tidal perturbations from the companion can
produce resonant transitions between the energy levels of the cloud, depleting
it by an amount that depends on the nature of the transition and on the
parameters of the binary. Previous cloud depletion estimates considered
binaries in circular orbit and made the approximation . Here we
use black hole perturbation theory to compute instability rates and decay
widths for generic values of , and we show that this leads to much
larger cloud depletion estimates when . We also study
eccentric binary orbits. We show that in this case resonances can occur at all
harmonics of the orbital frequency, significantly extending the range of
frequencies where cloud depletion may be observable with gravitational wave
interferometers.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. v2: references added, matches published versio
Effects of carbon source, carbon concentration and culture conditions on in vitro rooting of Pinus pinea L. microshoots
In stone pine (Pinus pinea L.), clonal propagation via adventitious shoot formation from cotyledons has been reported before but rooting of these shoots is poor. The number of rooted shoots had low frequency limiting the used of micropropagation protocols as a choice for mass propagation of superior genotypes. Therefore the main objective of the present work was to increase the number and quality of roots per shoot in order to ensure the survival and growth of a great number of plants in the acclimation phase. To achieve this, different combinations of carbon source (sucrose or glucose) at different concentrations, under different environmental conditions (temperature and light), were tested in the induction and expression phases of the adventitious root formation. Shoots of different clones obtained via organogenesis have been employed for the experiments. Observations were made on the rooting percentage, root length and number of roots per shoot. The results showed a general increased of the number of roots per shoot and an earlier root formation when glucose was used as a carbon source. However, there were no differences in the percentage of rooting between the carbons sources tested. The best results were obtained using 0.117 M of glucose and dark treatment combined with 19°C during the induction phase of the rhizogenic process. Light and low sugar concentration proved to be beneficial for the expression phase, increasing the root length. A remarkable interclonal difference in the ability to form roots was observed. It was possible to obtain a rooting percentage of more than 75% in several of the tested clones
Introduzidos estes conceitos, o segundo capítulo é dedicado à análise do tema central do
1.737.428-RS do STJ.
