    Evaluation of hearing protection used by police officers in the shooting range

    AbstractIntroductionImpact noise is characterized by acoustic energy peaks that last less than a second, at intervals of more than 1s.ObjectiveTo quantify the levels of impact noise to which police officers are exposed during activities at the shooting range and to evaluate the attenuation of the hearing protector.MethodsMeasurements were performed in the shooting range of a military police department. An SV 102 audiodosimeter (Svantek) was used to measure sound pressure levels. Two microphones were used simultaneously: one external and one insertion type; the firearm used was a 0.40 Taurus® rimless pistol.ResultsThe values obtained with the external microphone were 146dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 129.4dBC (fast). The results obtained with the insertion microphone were 138.7dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 121.6dBC (fast).ConclusionThe findings showed high levels of sound pressure in the shooting range, which exceeded the maximum recommended noise (120dBC), even when measured through the insertion microphone. Therefore, alternatives to improve the performance of hearing protection should be considered

    Insertion of speech and language therapy undergraduate students, from a public university, in communication disorder graduate programs

    OBJETIVO: caracterizar a inserção de egressos do Curso de Fonoaudiologia da Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) - Marília, em Programas de Pós-Graduação (PPG) Stricto Sensu brasileiros. MÉTODO: foram utilizadas listas de graduados e Curriculum Vitae do egresso e do orientador. RESULTADOS: dos 537 formados, 16,57% cursaram/estavam cursando PPG e destes, 98,88% em mestrado e 37,08% também em doutorado. Na grande área de conhecimento, 50% dos egressos de mestrado vincularam-se predominantemente a programas em Ciências da Saúde, 31,80% em Ciências Humanas e 13,64% em Linguística, Letras e Artes. No doutorado, 33, 33% em Ciências Humanas, 30,30% em Ciências da Saúde e em Linguística, Letras e Artes. Quanto à área de conhecimento, predominou a vinculação, no mestrado, de 30,68% em Fonoaudiologia, 28,41% em Educação, 13,64% em Linguística e 9,09% em Medicina I; e, no doutorado, de 33,33% em Educação, 30,30% em Linguística e 9,09% em Fonoaudiologia; 55,68% dissertações e 51,52% teses focalizaram a linguagem. A UNESP predominou com 39,77% no mestrado e 48,48% no doutorado. Predominou a vinculação a Programas com conceito 4 para 52,27% dos egressos do mestrado e 45,45% do doutorado. Quando constou a informação (55,68%), todos receberam fomento. O Teste de Razão de Verossimilhança não indicou diferenças significativas dos percentuais obtidos entre o mestrado e o doutorado. CONCLUSÃO: os resultados superaram os apresentados para o mesmo Estado, mostraram a característica interdisciplinar da Ciência Fonoaudiológica e o predomínio de temática em linguagem.PURPOSE: to characterize the insertion of undergraduate students from a Speech and Language Therapy Course at São Paulo State University - UNESP in Graduate Programs. METHOD: we used a list and the Curriculum Vitae of these students and their respective mentors. RESULTS: of the 537 graduates, 16.57% attended/were attending Graduate Programs, and of these, 98.88% were working at a Master Program and 37.08% at a Doctoral. Regarding the broad area of knowledge, 50% of master's students were enrolled in Health Science programs, 31.80% in Humanities and 13.64% in Linguistics. For doctoral level, 33, 33% were enrolled in Humanities and 30.30% in Health Sciences as well as in Linguistics. Regarding the knowledge specific area, 30.68% of Master's students were enrolled in Speech Pathology programs, 28.41% in Education, 13.64% in Linguistics and 9.09% in Medicine I. For doctorate level, 33.33% were enrolled in Education programs, 30.30% in Linguistics and 9.09% in Speech Pathology. Additionally, 55.68% dissertations and 51.52% thesis were focused on the language area. UNESP was the university that most attended: 39.77% and 48.48% students in master and doctoral programs, respectively. Among the overall students, 52.27% from master and 45.45% from doctoral levels were linked to programs with concept grade 4. When the information was available, all received scholarship. Test of Reason of Probabilities did not show significance differences between master and doctoral levels. CONCLUSION: findings were higher than previously reported for the same state, showing the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field of Communication Disorders, and the predominance of "Language" as the studied theme

    Análise dos níveis de pressão sonora dos sons emitidos por brinquedos ruidosos

    As experiências sonoras são muito importantes e estimulantes no desenvolvimento das crianças, elevados níveis de ruídos emitidos por brinquedos podem prejudicar a saúde auditiva das crianças. Este estudo analisou os níveis de ruídos emitidos por alguns brinquedos nacionalmente comercializados, pois essas irregularidades podem acarretar prejuízos não só à vida familiar como também no desenvolvimento escolar. Dos brinquedos analisados na distância de 2,5 cm (em relação à orelha), 90% excederam o padrão exigido pela legislação brasileira; na distância de 25 cm (distância média do braço da criança) 50% excederam esse mesmo padrão. Essa análise mostra que a maioria dos brinquedos comercializados atualmente, os quais não contêm o selo de certificação compulsória do Instituto Nacional de Metodologia, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial (Inmetro) pode provocar danos à audição das crianças expostas continuamente

    Firefighters' noise exposure: A literature review

    Aim: To review the literature about the effects of environmental noise on the hearing ability of firefighters. Method: The PubMed and Scielo databases were searched and studies from 2002 to 2012 that included the keywords firefighters, noise, and hearing loss were identified. Initially, 24 studies were selected, but only 10 met the inclusion criteria of investigating the effects of occupational noise on firefighters. Results: Only 2 (20%) studies quantified levels of sound pressure and performed audiological tests to identify associations with noise intensity and 3 (30%) questionnaire-based studies reported that these professionals are more susceptible to hearing loss. Four (50%) studies found that noise exposure damages the auditory system in this population. Discussion: These findings indicate that there is a necessity for preventive measures to be adopted by this population since it is considered to be at risk. Conclusion: In recent years, there have been few studies of firefighters' exposure to occupational noise, but our findings show the importance of new studies that include proper means of quantifying their exposure to noise in different work environments, in order to identify possible adverse conditions as well as to aid in the diagnosis of hearing loss

    Hearing loss in patients with diabetes mellitus Perdas auditivas em pacientes portadores de diabetes melito

    The relationship between diabetes mellitus and hearing loss is described as 'controversial' in the literature, given that in the clinical realm many patients present dysacusis while others do not. AIM: this study aims to investigate the relationship between hearing loss and diabetes mellitus and add to the knowledge being developed in this area. STUDY DESIGN: cross-sectional clinical trial. MATERIALS AND METHOD: in our study we analyzed the medical charts of 50 adult patients of both genders, aged above 45 years, and diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, seen in our institution in 2006 and 2007, and compared them to the charts of 50 metabolic disease-free individuals. RESULTS: this study found statistically significant worse audiometric thresholds among patients with diabetes mellitus when compared to patients in the control group. CONCLUSION: the results identified in this study point to a correlation between hearing loss and diabetes mellitus. This possibility should therefore be further investigated by health care workers providing care to patients with diabetes mellitus, in the form of closer follow-up on the auditory health of this patient group.<br>A literatura especializada descreve que a relação causa e efeito entre diabetes melito e perda auditiva é bastante controversa, visto que, na prática clínica, muitos pacientes apresentam disacusia e outros não. OBJETIVO: Investigar a relação entre perda auditiva e diabetes melito, a fim de contribuir para resultados mais precisos sobre o assunto em pauta. FORMA DE ESTUDO: Estudo clínico com coorte transversal. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: No presente estudo foram analisados os prontuários de 50 indivíduos adultos atendidos nos anos de 2006 e 2007, de ambos os sexos, com idade superior a 45 anos, portadores do diabetes melito, e 50 prontuários de indivíduos que não apresentaram doenças metabólicas. RESULTADOS: A presente pesquisa identificou uma piora dos limiares audiométricos dos pacientes com diabetes melito quando comparados aos do Grupo Controle, com diferença estatisticamente significante. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados obtidos neste estudo indicam a correlação entre perda auditiva e diabetes melito. Sendo assim, essa possibilidade deve ser investigada pelos profissionais da saúde que trabalham com portadores de diabetes melito, por meio de acompanhamento da saúde auditiva dessa população

    Morphometric and histochemical study of the human vocal muscle

    The present study was conducted on vocal muscles removed at autopsy Rom adult individuals (10 men and 8 women, aes ranging from 48 to 78 years) with no laryngeal disease. Histologic analysis was performed with hematoxylin and eosin staining, and histochemical analysis was performed by nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase, succinate dehydrogenase, and acid and alkaline myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase reactions. The histochemical reactions showed that the muscle consists of slow-twitch oxidative (SO), fast-twitch glycolytic (FG), and fast-twitch glycolytic oxidative (FOG) fibers distributed in mosaic form. The frequencies of SO, FOG, and FG fibers were 40.50%, 54.75%, and 4.75%, respectively. The higher frequency of SO and FOG oxidative fibers characterizes the muscle as having aerobic metabolism, resistance to fatigue, and fast contraction. The mean minimum diameters were 31.37 mu m for SO fibers and 36.46 mu m for FOG and FG fibers

    Morphological and histochemical analysis of the human vestibular fold

    A morphological and histochemical study of the human vestibular fold was carried out using routine histological techniques. Seven μm-thick histological sections stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Calleja showed the presence of elastic collagen fibers and seromucous glands in the vestibular fold. Muscle fibers forming the ventricular muscle were also identified. Ultrastructural analyses of the epithelial layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed ciliated cells and gland ducts opening on the epithelial surface. Histochemical analyses were performed on ventricular muscles submitted to nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase (NADH-TR), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), and myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase) reactions. Based on these reactions, it was observed that the muscle is formed by three types of muscle fibers: slow-twitch oxidative (SO), fast-twitch oxydative glycolytic (FOG) and fast-twitch glycolytic (FG) fibers distributed in a mosaic pattern. The fiber frequency was 22.7%, 69.9% and 7.4%, respectively. The higher frequency of SO and FOG fibers characterized the muscle as having aerobic metabolism and resistance to fatigue. The ventricular muscle was considered fast. The study of the neuromuscular junctions performed after nonspecific esterase reaction showed that they are of the en-plaque type and have multiple occurrences in the ventricular muscle

    Estudo comparativo da classificação do grau de perda auditiva em idosos institucionalizados Comparative study for classifying the hearing loss degree in institutionalized elderly

    OBJETIVO: comparar os resultados audiológicos de idosos institucionalizados, levando-se em consideração duas classificações distintas. MÉTODOS: foram avaliados 40 idosos de ambos os sexos, com faixa etária superior a 60 anos. Após levantar a história clínica audiológica e de realizar otoscopia, foram obtidos os limares tonais (via aérea e via óssea) dos indivíduos, com o uso de audiômetro Eymasa, dentro de cabina acústica. RESULTADOS: demonstraram que a classificação proposta pela Recomendação 02/1 do Bureau International d'Audio Phonologie, foi mais sensível quanto a caracterização da perda auditiva na população idosa. CONCLUSÃO: a classificação utilizada pela Recomentação 02/1 é a que melhor representa o grau de perda auditiva nesta população, uma vez que leva em consideração além das freqüências da fala (500, 1k e 2kHz), a freqüência de 4 kHz para o cálculo da média.<br>PURPOSE: to compare the audiological results for institutionalized elderly, taking into consideration two distinct classifications. METHODS: we evaluated 40 elderly of both genders, over 60-year-old, after assessing the clinical history and conduct of audiological otoscopy, we obtained the pure tone (via air and bone) of the individuals, by using the audiometer Eymasa within an acoustic cabin. RESULTS: the classification used by Recommendation 02/1 of Bureau International d'Audio Phonologie, was more sensitive about hearing loss characterization in the elderly population. CONCLUSION: the classification used by Recommendation 02/1, is the one that better represents hearing loss degree in this population, since it takes in consideration in addition to the speech frequencies (500, 1k and 2kHz), the frequency of 4kHz for calculating the mean value

    Análise acústica em brinquedos ruidosos

    PURPOSE: to analyze the levels of noise emitted by nationally-sold toys for use by children from 1 to 5 year old; to compare the values among the toys with and without the seal of Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality) and to analyze the sound spectrum of toys, in order to identify the area of the cochlea that may be more affected by these noises. METHOD: measurements were performed on 20 sound toys (10 with the seal of the Inmetro and 10 without the seal) with the use of digital sound level meter in an acoustically treated room, and the sound analysis was performed using the Praat program. RESULTS: toys placed at 2.5 cm from the equipment with the seal of the Inmetro had an intensity ranging from 61.50 to 91.55 dB (A) and from 69.75 to 95.05 dB (C), positioned at 25 cm ranged from 58.3 to 79.85 dB (A) and from 62.50 to 83.65 dB (C). The results of the toys without warranty stamps placed at 2.5 cm ranged from 67.45 to 94.30 dB (A) and 65.4 to 99.50 dB (C) and the distance of 25 cm recorded from 61. 30 to 87.45 dB (A) and 63.75 to 97.60 dB (C), so that the findings demonstrated that there are noisy toys that go beyond the values recommended by the current legislation in both groups, with and without warranty stamps . CONCLUSION: the toys without the seal of Inmetro showed intensities values significantly higher than the other group, offering more risk to the children s hearing health.OBJETIVO: analisar os níveis de ruídos emitidos por brinquedos nacionalmente comercializados, utilizados por crianças de 1 a 5 anos; comparar os valores entre os brinquedos com e sem selo do Inmetro (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial) e analisar o espectro acústico dos brinquedos, com o intuito de identificar a área da cóclea que pode ser mais afetada por esses ruídos. MÉTODO: as medições foram realizadas em 20 brinquedos sonoros (10 com o selo do Inmetro e 10 sem o selo) com o uso do decibelímetro digital em sala acusticamente tratada, e a análise dos sons emitidos pelos brinquedos foi realizada por meio do programa Praat. RESULTADOS: a intensidade do ruído dos brinquedos com o selo do Inmetro posicionados a 2,5 cm do equipamento variou de 61,50 a 91,55 dB(A) e 69,75 a 95,05 dB(C) e a referente à distância de 25 cm variou entre 58,30 a 79,85 dB(A) e 62,50 a 83,65 dB(C). A intensidade do ruído dos brinquedos sem o selo do Inmetro a 2,5 cm variou entre 67,45 a 94,30 dB(A) e 65,4 a 99,50 dB(C) e na distância de 25 cm registrou desde 61,30 a 87,45 dB(A) e 63,75 a 97,60 dB(C), portanto os achados demonstraram que existem brinquedos ruidosos que ultrapassam os valores recomendados pela legislação vigente em ambos os grupos, com e sem selo do Inmetro. CONCLUSÃO: os brinquedos sem o selo do Inmetro apresentaram valores de intensidade significantemente maior em relação ao outro grupo, oferecendo maior risco à saúde auditiva das crianças
