Structures associated with feeding in three broad-mouthed, benthic fish groups

The flatheads, toadfishes, and goosefishes discussed here hold certain features in common. All are bottom-living forms with depressed head areas and broad gapes, and all eat large food items: fishes and/or crabs. All have developed structural specializations in association with this diet. The three groups are at most distantly related, and their feeding specializations are different and have evolved from different bases. In flatheads the combination of large food items and depressed head regions seems to have led to the separation of the two halves of the pelvic girdle, a feature in which they differ from their scorpaenoid relatives. Toadfish peculiarities associated with feeding are various but most notable in those that pass crabs they eat through the gape and into the mouth. Goosefish feeding is centered around the use of a lure to attract prey to within striking distance. The three fish groups are discussed separately, but their feeding structures are compared to one another in the final section of the paper.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42639/1/10641_2004_Article_BF00005053.pd

In this UK-wide retrospective study, we set out to evaluate infections experienced by routine care patients who received this novel therapy across 24 cancer centres during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods The primary endpoint was infection morbidity (incidence, grading, hospitalization) as well as infection-related deaths. Secondary outcomes were clinical predictors of increased incidence of any grade (G2–5) and high grade (≥G3) infections. Results In a total cohort of 107 patients who received a median (IQR) of 4 cycles (2–8), 23.4% of patients experienced ≥1 any grade (G2–5) infections (total of 31 episodes) and 18.7% of patients experienced ≥1 high grade (≥G3) infections (total of 22 episodes). Median time (IQR) from start of therapy to first episode was 29 days (16–75). Six patients experienced COVID-19 infection, of whom 5 were not vaccinated and 1 was fully vaccinated. The cumulative duration of infection-related hospitalizations was 159 days. The multivariate (MVA) Poisson Regression analysis demonstrated that a higher co-morbidity burden with Charlson Co-morbidity Index (CCI) score ≥4 (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 3, p = 0.012) and sub-optimal myeloma response less than a partial response (<PR) (p = 0.048) are independent predictors of ≥ G3 infections. Conclusion Our study described initial results of infection burden during IsaPomDex treatment. We recommend close monitoring particularly in elderly patients with co-morbidities, the effective use of an-infective prophylaxis, as well as optimal vaccination strategies, to limit infections

Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures

Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation. Results: Factors associated with increased risk of revision surgery included: female sex, [hazard ratio (HR) 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25-2.50; P = 0.001], higher body mass index (fo

Within strain differences in sexual function in male rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes

    No full text
Diabetes mellitus is often associated with impotence and hypertension Streptozotocin (STZ) administration is followed by the development of diabetes mellitus, evidenced by glucosuria and hyperglycemia, hyperphagia and polydipsia. Earlier studies reported either [a] normal sexual function (Sachs, et al, ARCH, ANDROL. 9:351-3, 1982), or [b] loss of sexual function (e.g., Steger, et al, ENDOCRINOL. 124:1737-42, 1989). The only major difference in these studies was the supplier of the Sprague-Dawley rats. We now report that STZ (60 mg/kg, ip) is associated with an equivalent degree of hyperglycemia and glucosuria, in Sprague-Dawley rats from Charles River Laboratories (CRL) or from Harlan Sprague Dawley (HSD). However, secondary effects of diabetes were different - [a] in CRL diabetes was associated with a failure to gain weight, whereas in HSD weight loss was observed; [b] in CRL a moderate hypertension was observed at 36 days postSTZ (but not at 28 days), whereas in HSD a moderate hypertension was evident at 42 days (but not at 35 days); [c] in HSD, but not in CRL, severe deficits in copulatory behavior were evident; [d] in HSD, but not in CRL, relative seminal vesicle weights were smaller, whereas relative heart and kidney weights were larger, in STZ-treated rats. These data indicate that there are within strain differences in the nature and degree of the sequelae of physiological changes that occur in untreated diabetes mellitus.
