Reification and Truthmaking Patterns
Reification is a standard technique in conceptual modeling, which consists of including in the domain of discourse entities that may otherwise be hidden or implicit. However, deciding what should be rei- fied is not always easy. Recent work on formal ontology offers us a simple answer: put in the domain of discourse those entities that are responsible for the (alleged) truth of our propositions. These are called truthmakers. Re-visiting previous work, we propose in this paper a systematic analysis of truthmaking patterns for properties and relations based on the ontolog- ical nature of their truthmakers. Truthmaking patterns will be presented as generalization of reification patterns, accounting for the fact that, in some cases, we do not reify a property or a relationship directly, but we rather reify its truthmakers
Association of endometrioid ovarian carcinoma arising from endometriosis, endometrioid endometrial carcinoma, and high-grade undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma. a case report
Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects women of reproductive age. Malignant transformation in endometriosis is considered to be an unusual event, only occurring in 0.7-0.1% of cases. However the association between endometriosis and endometrial cancer is not well defined. Also in literature, rare cases of uterine sarcoma, about 3% of all uterine malignancies, associated with endometriosis have been reported. The authors report a case of a 47-years-old Italian woman with histologic diagnosis of endometrioid ovarian carcinoma arising from endometriosis, endometrioid endometrial carcinoma, and undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma. Therefore there have been few studies addressing the relationship between endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS), and endometriosis. Novel scientific findings are necessary to investigate a possible common pathway and an effective treatment, although complete tumor resection can reduce the recurrence rate
A new multiparametric topological method for determining the primary cosmic ray mass composition in the knee energy region
The determination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the
characteristics of extensive air showers (EAS), obtained at an observation
level in the lower half of the atmosphere, is still an open problem. In this
work we propose a new method of the Multiparametric Topological Analysis and
show its applicability for the determination of the mass composition of the
primary cosmic rays at the PeV energy region.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, talk given at Vulcano 2004 Workshop 'Frontier

Ovarian endometrioid adenocarcinoma diagnosed in pregnancy. a case report
The prevalence of adnexal masses pregnancy is about 0.19-8.8%. The malignancy rate is around 1-6%, and indeed most cases are benign masses. During pregnancy adnexal masses should be accurately evaluated to identify the patients who need surgery from those who need a 'wait-and-see' strategy. The authors report a case of 36-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 2, two vaginal deliveries) referred to the Gynecologic Department with diagnosis of endometrioid ovarian adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent laparotomic surgery with left salpingo-oophorectomy, total hysterectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy, and peritoneal washing for optimal surgery staging. No ascites or residual tumour in the abdominal cavity were found macroscopically. Histopathology was negative for residual ovarian cancer. Currently the treatment and the management of ovarian cancer are not well established because scientific evidence is limited
Precise determination of muon and electromagnetic shower contents from shower universality property
We consider two new aspects of Extensive Air Shower development universality
allowing to make accurate estimation of muon and electromagnetic (EM) shower
contents in two independent ways. In the first case, to get muon (or EM) signal
in water Cherenkov tanks or in scintillator detectors it is enough to know the
vertical depth of shower maximum and the total signal in the ground detector.
In the second case, the EM signal can be calculated from the primary particle
energy and the zenith angle. In both cases the parametrizations of muon and EM
signals are almost independent on primary particle nature, energy and zenith
angle. Implications of the considered properties for mass composition and
hadronic interaction studies are briefly discussed. The present study is
performed on 28000 of proton, oxygen and iron showers, generated with CORSIKA
6.735 for spectrum in the energy range log(E/eV)=18.5-20.0 and
uniformly distributed in cos^2(theta) in zenith angle interval theta=0-65
degrees for QGSJET II/Fluka interaction models.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
A New Genus of Miniaturized and Pug-Nosed Gecko from South America (Sphaerodactylidae: Gekkota)
Sphaerodactyl geckos comprise five genera distributed across Central and South America and the Caribbean. We estimated phylogenetic relationships among sphaerodactyl genera using both separate and combined analyses of seven nuclear genes. Relationships among genera were incongruent at different loci and phylogenies were characterized by short, in some cases zero-length, internal branches and poor phylogenetic support at most nodes. We recovered a polyphyletic Coleodactylus, with Coleodactylus amazonicus being deeply divergent from the remaining Coleodactylus species sampled. The C. amazonicus lineage possessed unique codon deletions in the genes PTPN12 and RBMX while the remaining Coleodactylus species had unique codon deletions in RAG1. Topology tests could not reject a monophyletic Coleodactylus, but we show that short internal branch lengths decreased the accuracy of topology tests because there were not enough data along these short branches to support one phylogenetic hypothesis over another. Morphological data corroborated results of the molecular phylogeny, with Coleodactylus exhibiting substantial morphological heterogeneity. We identified a suite of unique craniofacial features that differentiate C. amazonicus not only from other Coleodactylus species, but also from all other geckos. We describe this novel sphaerodactyl lineage as a new genus, Chatogekko gen. nov. We present a detailed osteology of Chatogekko, characterizing osteological correlates of miniaturization that provide a framework for future studies in sphaerodactyl systematics and biology
Discovery of a second locality for the narrow endemic Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) in NW Sicily
A new population of Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) has been discovered on Mt Pecoraro (Cinisi, NW Sicily), a limestone headland at about 14 km from Mt Gallo (Palermo), the locus classicus et unicus of this species described in 1884. Taxonomic framework, distribution update, habitat characterisation, ecology and phytosociological framework are provided, as well as meta-population numerical estimates and risk status assessment
Can fear cause economic collapse? Insights from an experimental study
Zusammenbruch." (Autorenreferat)"We study the behavior of experimental subjects who have to make a sequence
of risky investment decisions in the presence of network externalities. Subjects
follow a simple heuristic â investing after positive experiences and reducing
their propensity to invest after a failure. This result contrasts with the theoretical
findings of Jeitschko and Taylor (2001) in which even agents who have only
good experiences eventually stop investing because they are afraid that others
with worse experiences will quit. In theory, this 'Bayesian fear' can trigger
sudden economic collapse â even in the most efficient Bayesian equilibrium. In
the experiment, subjects are surprisingly fearless of othersâ experiences, and
simply follow their own experiences, thus averting a total collapse." (author's abstract
