    High-speed Imaging of a Bulk Metallic Glass During Uniaxial Compression

    High-speed imaging directly correlates the propagation of a particular shear band with mechanical measurements during uniaxial compression of a bulk metallic glass. Imaging shows shear occurs simultaneously over the entire shear plane, and load data, synced and time-stamped to the same clock as the camera, reveal that shear sliding is coincident with the load drop of each serration. Digital image correlation agrees with these results. These data demonstrate that shear band sliding occurs with velocities on the order of millimeters per second. Fracture occurs much more rapidly than the shear banding events, thereby readily leading to melting on fracture surfaces

    Racial Discrimination in Life Insurance

    We examine the historical and statistical relationship between race and life insurance. Life insurance can play a central role in householdsā€™ financial security. Race has played an important and changing role in the provision of life insurance in the U.S. from slave insurance before the Civil War, to ā€œScientific Racismā€ continuing into the 20th century, to policies that do not explicitly mention race in recent decades. In empirical work using new data, we confirm earlier work showing that Black individuals have higher life insurance coverage rates than white individuals, controlling for observable characteristics. We find no difference in the likelihood of purchasing coverageā€”for Black individuals versus white individualsā€”in states with strong versus weak anti-discrimination laws. We also find that the presence of strong anti-discrimination laws tends to reduce overall life insurance coverage ā€“ by about 3 percentage points. We present some evidence that this finding is due to a generally stronger regulatory stance in the state rather than the specific impact of the anti-discrimination life insurance law. This analysis bears on the presence of discrimination in the current life insurance industry as well as related issues like the financial status of minority households

    Investigation of creep damage and cavitation mechanisms in P92 steels

    In typically processed creep stress enhanced ferritic steels (CSEF) it has been observed that the long term performance and creep rupture strength is below that predicted from a simple extrapolation of the short term creep data. One of the primary microstructural degradation mechanisms responsible for this behaviour is the development of creep voids. Nucleation, growth and interlinkage of voids will also result in a significant loss of creep ductility. In this study, the cavities in creep tested P92 steel have been characterised. It has been found that in the standard P92 samples studied, the cavities are associated with large (typically 1-2 Ī¼m) ceramic particles. Three particle compositions were observed and more detailed TEM investigations showed that these particles were BN, MnS and Ī³-Al2O3. Statistical analysis of the ceramic particle types showed that in all samples studied a very high proportion of the cavities was associated with BN particles. The shape of both the cavity and associated particle were studied in 3D using a Focussed Ion Beam/ Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB-FEGSEM) ā€˜slice and viewā€™ technique. This showed that both the cavity and associated particle had very irregular shapes. Analysis in the head-gauge transition area of a creep test bar, where the exposure stress is low, showed small cavities associated with the BN particles. This provides strong evidence that the cavities were preferentially nucleating on the hard, irregularly shaped BN particles

    Effects of Helium Implantation on the Tensile Properties and Microstructure of Niā‚‡ā‚ƒPā‚‚ā‚‡ Metallic Glass Nanostructures

    We report fabrication and nanomechanical tension experiments on as-fabricated and helium-implanted 130 nm diameter Niā‚‡ā‚ƒPā‚‚ā‚‡ metallic glass nanocylinders. The nanocylinders were fabricated by a templated electroplating process and implanted with He+ at energies of 50, 100, 150, and 200 keV to create a uniform helium concentration of 3 atom % throughout the nanocylinders. Transmission electron microscopy imaging and through-focus analysis reveal that the specimens contained 2 nm helium bubbles distributed uniformly throughout the nanocylinder volume. In situ tensile experiments indicate that helium-implanted specimens exhibit enhanced ductility as evidenced by a 2-fold increase in plastic strain over as-fabricated specimens with no sacrifice in yield and ultimate tensile strengths. This improvement in mechanical properties suggests that metallic glasses may actually exhibit a favorable response to high levels of helium implantation

    NHERF1 regulates the progression of colorectal cancer through the interplay with VEGFR2 pathway

    The oncogenic role of ectopic expression of Na+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor 1 (NHERF1) was recently suggested in colorectal cancer, where it was implicated in playing a role in the tumor hypoxia microenvironment. Here we showed that a high level expression of NHERF1 was found in colorectal cancer tissues and that the expression of NHERF1 was positively correlated with VEGFR2 expression. The prognostic value of VEGFR2 expression in colorectal cancer relied on the expression of NHERF1. The up-regulation of NHERF1 induced by the exposure to hypoxia in colon cancer cells depended on the activation of VEGFR2 signaling. NHERF1 in turn inhibited the activation of VEGFR2 signaling which could be regulated by the interaction between NHERF1 and VEGFR2, resulting in the reduction of migration and invasion of colon cancer cells. These results suggest a dynamic interplay between NHERF1 and VEGFR2 signaling in colorectal cancer, which could explain the contribution of NHERF1 to the regulation of tumor cell responses to the hypoxia microenvironment

    Generalized substitution of isoencoding codons shortens the duration of papillomavirus L1 protein expression in transiently gene-transfected keratinocytes due to cell differentiation

    Recently we reported that gene codon composition determines differentiation-dependent expression of the PV L1 genes in mouse primary keratinocytes (KCs) in vitro and in vivo (Zhao et al. 2005, Mol. Cell Biol. 25:8643ā€“8655). Here, we investigated whether generalized substitution of isoencoding codons affects the duration of expression of PV L1 genes in mouse and human KCs in day 1 culture transiently transfected with native (Nat) and codon modified (Mod) L1 genes. Following transient transfection, KC continuously transcribed both Nat and Mod PV L1 genes for at least 12 days, with the levels of L1 mRNAs from the Mod L1 genes significantly higher than those from the Nat L1 genes. However, continuous L1 protein expression at day 9 post-transfection was observed for both mouse and human KCs transfected with the Nat L1 genes only. Further, aa-tRNAs prepared from D8 KC cultures enhanced translation of two PV Nat L1 DNAs in RRL lysate and PV Nat L1 mRNAs in D0 cell-free lysate, whereas aa-tRNAs from D0 KCs enhanced translation of PV Mod L1 mRNAs in D8 cell-free lysate. It appears that aa-tRNAs in less-differentiated and differentiated KCs differentially match the PV Nat and Mod L1 mRNAs to regulate their translations in vitro

    Cervical dystonia incidence and diagnostic delay in a multiethnic population.

    BackgroundCurrent cervical dystonia (CD) incidence estimates are based on small numbers in relatively ethnically homogenous populations. The frequency and consequences of delayed CD diagnosis is poorly characterized.ObjectivesTo determine CD incidence and characterize CD diagnostic delay within a large, multiethnic integrated health maintenance organization.MethodsWe identified incident CD cases using electronic medical records and multistage screening of more than 3 million Kaiser Permanente Northern California members from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2007. A final diagnosis was made by movement disorders specialist consensus. Diagnostic delay was measured by questionnaire and health utilization data. Incidence rates were estimated assuming a Poisson distribution of cases and directly standardized to the 2000 U.S. census. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to assess diagnoses and behaviors preceding CD compared with matched controls, adjusting for age, sex, and membership duration.ResultsCD incidence was 1.18/100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35-2.0; women, 1.81; men, 0.52) based on 200 cases over 15.4 million person-years. Incidence increased with age. Half of the CD patients interviewed reported diagnostic delay. Diagnoses more common in CD patients before the index date included essential tremor (odds ratio [OR] 68.1; 95% CI, 28.2-164.5), cervical disc disease (OR 3.83; 95% CI, 2.8-5.2), neck sprain/strain (OR 2.77; 95% CI, 1.99-3.62), anxiety (OR 2.24; 95% CI, 1.63-3.11) and depression (OR 1.94; 95% CI, 1.4-2.68).ConclusionsCD incidence is greater in women and increases with age.
