Discrete Ambiguities in the Measurement of the Weak Phase Gamma
Several time-independent methods have been devised for measuring the phase
gamma of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle. It is shown that
such measurements generally suffer from discrete ambiguity which is at least
8-fold, not 4-fold as commonly stated. This has serious experimental
implications, which are explored in methods involving B->DK decays. The
measurement sensitivity and new physics discovery potential are estimated using
a full Monte Carlo detector simulation with realistic background estimates.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, fixed typ
Assessment of Sustainable Development
The objective of this paper is to introduce fuzzy set theory and develop fuzzy mathematical models to assess sustainable development based on context-dependent economic, ecological, and societal sustainability indicators. Membership functions are at the core of fuzzy models, and define the degree to which indicators contribute to development. Although a decision-making process regarding sustainable development is subjective, fuzzy set theory links human expectations about development, expressed in linguistic propositions, to numerical data, expressed in measurements of sustainability indicators. In the future, practical implementation of such models will be based on elicitation of expert knowledge to construct a membership function. The fuzzy models developed in this paper provide a novel approach to support decisions regarding sustainable development
Determining using with multibody D decays
We propose a method for determining using decays
followed by a multibody decay, such as , and . The main advantages of the method is
that it uses only Cabibbo allowed decays, and that large strong phases are
expected due to the presence of resonances. Since no knowledge about the
resonance structure is needed, can be extracted without any hadronic

uncertainties from the analysis of and K^\pm \D0bar
followed by singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays to non CP-eigenstates, such as
. This method utilizes the interference between and decays, and we point out several attractive features of
it. All the modes that need to be measured for this method are accessible in

CP Violation in Semileptonic Decays with Unpolarized Beams
CP violating signals in semileptonic decays are studied. These can be
observed in decays of unpolarized single 's even if their rest frame
cannot be reconstructed. No beam polarization is required. The importance of

Using untagged B^0 -> D K_S to determine gamma
It is shown that the weak phase gamma=arg(-V_{ud}V^*_{ub}V_{cb}V_{cd}^*) can
be determined using only untagged decays B/Bbar--> D K_S. In order to reduce
the uncertainty in gamma, we suggest combining information from B^{+-}-->
DK^{+-} and from untagged B^0 decays, where the D meson is observed in common
decay modes. Theoretical assumptions, which may further reduce the statistical

Photon polarization in radiative B decays
We study decay distributions in B -> K pi pi gamma, combining contributions
from several overlapping resonances in a K pi pi mass range near 1400 MeV,
(1^+) K_1(1400), (2^+) K^*_2(1430) and (1^-) K^*(1410). A method is proposed
for using these distributions to determine a photon polarization parameter in
the effective radiative weak Hamiltonian. This parameter is measured through an
up-down asymmetry of the photon direction relative to the K pi pi decay plane.
We calculate a dominant up-down asymmetry of 0.33 +- 0.05 from the K1(1400)
resonance, which can be measured with about 10^8 B B-bar pairs, thus providing
a new test for the Standard Model and a probe for some of its extensions.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Lepton Polarization and Forward-Backward Asymmetries in b -> s tau+ tau-
We study the spin polarizations of both tau leptons in the decay b -> s tau+
tau-. In addition to the polarization asymmetries involving a single tau, we
construct asymmetries for the case where both polarizations are simultaneously
measured. We also study forward-backward asymmetries with polarized tau's. We
find that a large number of asymmetries are predicted to be large, >~ 10%. This
permits the measurement of all Wilson coefficients and the b-quark mass, thus
allowing the standard model (SM) to be exhaustively tested. Furthermore, there
are many unique signals for the presence of new physics. For example,
asymmetries involving triple-product correlations are predicted to be tiny
within the SM, O(10^{-2}). Their observation would be a clear signal of new

Notch-Fatigue Properties of Advanced TRIP-Aided Bainitic Ferrite Steels
To develop a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)-aided bainitic ferrite steel (TBF steel) with high hardenability for a common rail of the next generation diesel engine, 0.2 pct C-1.5 pct Si-1.5 pct Mn-0.05 pct Nb TBF steels with different contents of Cr, Mo, and Ni were produced. The notch-fatigue strength of the TBF steels was investigated and was related to the microstructural and retained austenite characteristics. If Cr, Mo, and/or Ni were added to the base steel, then the steels achieved extremely higher notch-fatigue limits and lower notch sensitivity than base TBF steel and the conventional structural steels. This was mainly associated with (1) carbide-free and fine bainitic ferrite lath structure matrix without proeutectoid ferrite, (2) a large amount of fine metastable retained austenite, and (3) blocky martensite phase including retained austenite, which may suppress a fatigue crack initiation and propagation.ArticleMETALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS TRANSACTIONS A-PHYSICAL METALLURGY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE. 43A(11):4129-4136 (2012)journal articl
Spin-Momentum Correlations in Inclusive Semileptonic Decays of Polarized Baryons
We consider spin-momentum correlations between the spin of the bottom baryon
and the momenta of its decay products in its inclusive
semileptonic decay. We define several polar and azimuthal spin-momentum
correlation measures in different event coordinate systems. The values of the
spin-momentum correlation measures are calculated up to
using the standard OPE und HQET methods. Some of the measures turn out to be
sufficiently large to make them good candidates for a determination of the
