Violation of self-similarity in the expansion of a 1D Bose gas
The expansion of a 1D Bose gas is investigated employing the Lieb-Liniger
equation of state within the local density approximation. We show that during
the expansion the density profile of the gas does not follow a self-similar
solution, as one would expect from a simple scaling Ansatz. We carry out a
variational calculation, which recovers the numerical results for the
expansion, the equilibrium properties of the density profile, and the frequency
of the lowest compressional mode. The variational approach allows for the
analysis of the expansion in all interaction regimes between the mean field and
the Tonks-Girardeau limits, and in particular shows the range of parameters for
which the expansion violates self-similarity.Comment: 6 pages, 5 eps figure

Control of induced infestations of adult Amblyomma hebraeum with sustained release ivermectin
The efficacy of ivermectin, administered in a sustained release formulation by intraruminal pumps at approximate daily dose rates of 20, 40 and 60 µg/kg, was evaluated in 16 cattle against induced infestations of 3 strains of adult Amblyomma hebraeum. Engorged female ticks were mass-measured and incubated, and reproductive data recorded. There was an increase in mortality of male and female ticks compared to that of controls with increasing daily dose of ivermectin, and a decrease in the number of ticks engorging. Ticks fed on ivermectin-treated cattle had a smaller mass when engorged and laid smaller egg masses, both absolutely and as a proportion of engorged mass. Index of reproduction was reduced 100 % at 60 µg/kg /day, > 99 % at 40 µg/kg/day and 96 % at 20 µg/kg/day. Differences occurred between the 3 strains of A. hebraeum used in the study, especially with regard to engorged mass and reproductive variables. Practical implications of the application of sustained release ivermectin for the control of A. hebraeum, specifically with reference to heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium), are discussed.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Momentum flux density, kinetic energy density and their fluctuations for one-dimensional confined gases of non-interacting fermions
We present a Green's function method for the evaluation of the particle
density profile and of the higher moments of the one-body density matrix in a
mesoscopic system of N Fermi particles moving independently in a linear
potential. The usefulness of the method is illustrated by applications to a
Fermi gas confined in a harmonic potential well, for which we evaluate the
momentum flux and kinetic energy densities as well as their quantal mean-square
fluctuations. We also study some properties of the kinetic energy functional
E_{kin}[n(x)] in the same system. Whereas a local approximation to the kinetic
energy density yields a multi-valued function, an exact single-valued
relationship between the density derivative of E_{kin}[n(x)] and the particle
density n(x) is demonstrated and evaluated for various values of the number of

The Bogoliubov Theory of a BEC in Particle Representation
In the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory of BEC the Bogoliubov
transformation between quasiparticles and particles is nonlinear. We invert
this nonlinear transformation and give general expression for eigenstates of
the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian in particle representation. The particle
representation unveils structure of a condensate multiparticle wavefunction. We

Association Between Efavirenz-Based Compared With Nevirapine-Based Antiretroviral Regimens and Virological Failure in HIV-Infected Children
Importance Worldwide, the nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) efavirenz and nevirapine are commonly used in first-line antiretroviral regimens in both adults and children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Data on the comparative effectiveness of these medications in children are limited. Objective To investigate whether virological failure is more likely among children who initiated 1 or the other NNRTI-based HIV treatment. Design, Setting, and Participants Retrospective cohort study of children (aged 3–16 years) who initiated efavirenz-based (n=421) or nevirapine-based (n=383) treatment between April 2002 and January 2011 at a large pediatric HIV care setting in Botswana. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was time from initiation of therapy to virological failure. Virological failure was defined as lack of plasma HIV RNA suppression to less than 400 copies/mL by 6 months or confirmed HIV RNA of 400 copies/mL or greater after suppression. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis compared time to virological failure by regimen. Multivariable Cox regression controlled for age, sex, baseline immunologic category, baseline clinical category, baseline viral load, nutritional status, NRTIs used, receipt of single-dose nevirapine, and treatment for tuberculosis. Results
With a median follow-up time of 69 months (range, 6–112 months; interquartile range, 23–87 months), 57 children (13.5%; 95% CI, 10.4%–17.2%) initiating treatment with efavirenz and 101 children (26.4%; 95% CI, 22.0%–31.1%) initiating treatment with nevirapine had virological failure. There were 11 children (2.6%; 95% CI, 1.3%–4.6%) receiving efavirenz and 20 children (5.2%; 95% CI, 3.2%–7.9%) receiving nevirapine who never achieved virological suppression. The Cox proportional hazard ratio for the combined virological failure end point was 2.0 (95% CI, 1.4–2.7; log rank P Conclusions and Relevance Among children aged 3 to 16 years infected with HIV and treated at a clinic in Botswana, the use of efavirenz compared with nevirapine as initial antiretroviral treatment was associated with less virological failure. These findings may warrant additional research evaluating the use of efavirenz and nevirapine for pediatric patients
Ensemble density functional theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect
We develop an ensemble density functional theory for the fractional quantum
Hall effect using a local density approximation. Model calculations for edge
reconstructions of a spin-polarized quantum dot give results in good agreement
with semiclassical and Hartree-Fock calculations, and with small system
numerical diagonalizations. This establishes the usefulness of density
functional theory to study the fractional quantum Hall effect, which opens up
the possibility of studying inhomegeneous systems with many more electrons than

Finite gravitational action for higher derivative and stringy gravities
We generalize the local surface counterterm prescription suggested in
Einstein gravity for higher derivative (HD) and Weyl gravities. Explicitly, the
surface counterterm is found for three- and five-dimensional HD gravities. As a
result, the gravitational action for asymptotically AdS spaces is finite and
gravitational energy-momentum tensor is well-defined. The holographic trace
anomaly for d2 and d4 boundary (gauge) QFT dual to above HD gravity is
calculated from gravitational energy-momentum tensor. The calculation of AdS
black hole mass in HD gravity is presented within above prescrition. The

Incorporating expression data in metabolic modeling: a case study of lactate dehydrogenase
Integrating biological information from different sources to understand
cellular processes is an important problem in systems biology. We use data from
mRNA expression arrays and chemical kinetics to formulate a metabolic model
relevant to K562 erythroleukemia cells. MAP kinase pathway activation alters
the expression of metabolic enzymes in K562 cells. Our array data show changes
in expression of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoforms after treatment with
phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), which activates MAP kinase signaling. We
model the change in lactate production which occurs when the MAP kinase pathway
is activated, using a non-equilibrium, chemical-kinetic model of homolactic
fermentation. In particular, we examine the role of LDH isoforms, which
catalyze the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. Changes in the isoform ratio
are not the primary determinant of the production of lactate. Rather, the total
