In dit artikel worden suggesties gedaan voor milieutechisch onderzoek naar schuimproblemen in slibvergisters op basis van de kennis die opgedaan is in de levensmiddelentechnologie

    Tertiary activated carbon treatment of paper and board industry wastewater

    The feasibility of activated carbon post-treatment of (biologically treated) wastewater from the paper and board industry was investigated, the goal being to remove refractory organic pollutants and produce water that can be re-used in the production process. Because closing water-circuits in the paper and board industry results in higher water temperatures, the effect of the temperature on activated carbon treatment was also investigated. Batch and column adsorption tests showed that activated carbon provides an excellent removal of cationic demand and color related compounds, the two most important representatives of organic compounds that have to be removed. Unexpectedly, higher water temperatures enhanced the performance of activated carbon. However, the treatment costs, mainly determined by transport and regeneration of the carbon, were very high. At long contact times between the wastewater and the carbon the occurrence of biodegradation was observed. Biological regeneration of the carbon may therefore provide a means to reduce the treatment costs, but a practical application requires further research

    Load-extension tests on flour dough are widely used by plant breeders, millers and bakers. The 'Kieffer dough and gluten extensibility rig' is a small-scale version of the Brabender extensograph, in which test pieces of about 0.4 g are extended. With the Kieffer rig, lower strain rates can be applied than in the Brabender extensograph and the experimental data can be expressed in terms of stress and strain. In this paper the performance of the Kieffer rig is illustrated by measurements on a weak and a strong dough. Formulas are given for the calculation of fundamental rheological parameters from the results of measure­ments with the Kieffer rig. Sagging and bending of the test pieces before measurements could be started, caused difficulties in the determination of the exact starting point of extension. The deformation was not purely uniaxial extension, because a shear component was also observed. The amount of dough that is extended did not increase throughout the test. This is probably due to the occurrence of a shear component fracture which occurred mainly near the hook. A relatively large variation in stress and strain at fracture was observed. The maximum in stress represents the strain at which the sample fractures macro­scopically better than the maximum in force. Variation in deformation history and volume of the test pieces have a negative effect on the reproducibility

    Determination of Fracture Stresses of Adsorbed Protein Layers at Air-Water Interfaces

    lkProteins are widely used for the physical stabilization of emulsions and foams. Stabilization strongly depends on the interfacial properties of the proteins. In many cases likely a kind of interfacial gel layer is formed. This paper deals with fracture properties of such interfacial gelled protein layers as studied by the overflowing cylinder technique. In the first part of the paper, equations are presented for the calculation of the fracture stress of these protein layers from experimental data. This is illustrated in the second part of this paper for ovalbumin, glycinin, -casein, and -lactoglobulin. Obtained fracture stresses are on the order of 2 × 105 Pa and dependent on the type of protein. Protein properties such as conformation seem to be important aspects, determining the height of the fracture stress. Although interfacial protein gels are fracturable, relaxation phenomena within the gelled protein layers are also important

    The effects of acetate, propionate, and butyrate on the anaerobic thermophilic conversion of propionate by methanogenic sludge and by enriched propionate-oxidizing bacteria in syntrophy with Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum delta H were studied. The methanogenic sludge was cultivated in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor fed with propionate (35 mM) as the sole substrate for a period of 80 days. Propionate degradation was shown to be severely inhibited by the addition of 50 mM acetate to the influent of the UASB reactor. The inhibitory effect remained even when the acetate concentration in the effluent was below the level of detection. Recovery of propionate oxidation occurred only when acetate was omitted from the influent medium. Propionate degradation by the methanogenic sludge in the UASB reactor was not affected by the addition of an equimolar concentration (35 mM) of butyrate to the influent. However, butyrate had a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of the propionate-oxidizing enrichment culture. In that case, the conversion of propionate was almost completely inhibited at a butyrate concentration of 10 mM. However, addition of a butyrate-oxidizing enrichment culture abolished the inhibitory effect, and propionate oxidation was even stimulated. All experiments were conducted at pH 7.0 to 7.7. The thermophilic syntrophic culture showed a sensitivity to acetate and propionate similar to that of mesophilic cultures described in the literature. Additions of butyrate or acetate to the propionate medium had no effect on the hydrogen partial pressure in the biogas of an UASB reactor, nor was the hydrogen partial pressure in propionate-degrading cultures affected by the two acids.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS
