The results of search for Supersymmetry performed at the Tevatron Collider by the CDF and D0 collaborations are summarized in this paper. No significant deviations with respect to the Standard Model expectations were observed and constraints were set on supersymmetric parameters.Comment: 46th Rencontres De Moriond On QCD And High Energy Interaction

Simulation of microalgal growth in a continuous photobioreactor with sedimentation and partial biomass recycling

Microalgae are considered as promising feedstocks for the third generation of biofuels. They are autotrophic organisms with high growth rate and can stock an enormous quantity of lipids (about 20 \u2013 40% of their dried cellular weight). This work was aimed at studying the cultivation of Scenedesmus obliquus in a two-stage system composed of a photobioreactor and a settler to concentrate and partially recycle the biomass as a way to enhance the microalgae cellular productivity. It was attempted to specify by simulation and experimental data a relationship between the recycling rate, kinetic parameters of microalgal growth and photobioreactor operating conditions. Scenedesmus obliquus cells were cultivated in a lab-scale flat-plate reactor, homogenized by aeration, and running in continuous flow with a residence time of 1.66 day. Experimental data for the microalgal growth were used in a semi-empirical simulation model. The best results were obtained for Fw = 0.2FI , when R = 1 and kd = 0 and 0.05 day-1, with the biomass production in the reactor varying between 8 g L -1 and 14 g L-1, respectively. The mathematical model fitted to the microalgal growth experimental data was appropriate for predicting the efficiency of the reactor in producing Scenedesmus obliquus cells, establishing a relation between cellular productivity and the minimum recycling rate that must be used in the system

Searching for sgluons in multitop events at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV

Large classes of new physics theories predict the existence of new scalar states, commonly dubbed sgluons, lying in the adjoint representation of the QCD gauge group. Since these new fields are expected to decay into colored Standard Model particles, and in particular into one or two top quarks, these theories predict a possible enhancement of the hadroproduction rate associated with multitop final states. We therefore investigate multitop events produced at the Large Hadron Collider, running at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and employ those events to probe the possible existence of color adjoint scalar particles. We first construct a simplified effective field theory motivated by R-symmetric supersymmetric models where sgluon fields decay dominantly into top quarks. We then use this model to analyze the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider in both a multilepton plus jets and a single lepton plus jets channel. After having based our event selection strategy on the possible presence of two, three and four top quarks in the final state, we find that sgluon-induced new physics contributions to multitop cross sections as low as 10-100 fb can be excluded at the 95% confidence level, assuming an integrated luminosity of 20 inverse fb. Equivalently, sgluon masses of about 500-700 GeV can be reached for several classes of benchmark scenarios.Comment: 26 pages; 8 figures, 6 tables; version accepted by JHE

The Airy fibre: an optical fibre that guides light diffracted by a circular aperture

    Get PDF
We have designed and made an optical fibre that guides an approximate Airy pattern as one of its guided modes. The fibre's attenuation was 11.0 dB/km at 1550 nm wavelength, the match between the fibre's mode and the ideal infinite Airy pattern was 93.7%, and the far field resembled a top-hat beam. The guidance mechanism has strong similarities to photonic bandgap guidance.Comment: 11 page

Squarks and gluino searches at the Tevatron

    Get PDF
International audienceA search for squarks and gluinos performed by the CDF and DØ collaborations is presented. The sample taken during the RunII of the Fermilab TeVatron collider at ps = 1.96 TeV is used. Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most promising ways to solve crucial problems of the Standard Model (SM). This spacetime symmetry links bosons to fermions by introducing supersymmetric partners (sparticles) to all SM particles: squarks and gluinos are SUSY partners of quarks and gluons. The mass difference between the squark mass eigenstates depend on the mass of the corresponding quark. Hence squarks are (to a good approximation) mass degenerate for the two first generations whereas a (potentially) large mixing may appear for the third family, leading to a light stop. The former case corresponds to squarks and gluinos searches whereas dedicated searches for stop are performed for the latter
