The Economic Incidence of R&D and Promotion Investments in the Australian Beef Industry
The issue of the relative returns to farmers from R&D and promotion is examined using a multi-sectoral equilibrium displacement model of the Australian beef industry. Total economic surplus changes and their distributions among various industry groups resulting from 1% cost reductions in various farm and off-farm sectors, and from 1% price premiums from domestic and export market promotion, are estimated. The results are consistent with previous studies in showing that in general, the share of total benefits to farmers is larger from on-farm research than from most off-farm research, and is larger from most types of research than from domestic promotion. The share of total benefits to farmers is larger from export promotion than from off-farm research, and from domestic promotion. The net returns from the different cost-reduction or demand-enhancing scenarios depend on the costs of achieving them.Economics of R&D, promotion, beef industry, equilibrium displacement modelling.
Spacetime Coarse Grainings in the Decoherent Histories Approach to Quantum Theory
We investigate the possibility of assigning consistent probabilities to sets
of histories characterized by whether they enter a particular subspace of the
Hilbert space of a closed system during a given time interval. In particular we
investigate the case that this subspace is a region of the configuration space.
This corresponds to a particular class of coarse grainings of spacetime
regions. We consider the arrival time problem and the problem of time in
reparametrization invariant theories as for example in canonical quantum
gravity. Decoherence conditions and probabilities for those application are
derived. The resulting decoherence condition does not depend on the explicit
form of the restricted propagator that was problematic for generalizations such
as application in quantum cosmology. Closely related is the problem of
tunnelling time as well as the quantum Zeno effect. Some interpretational
comments conclude, and we discuss the applicability of this formalism to deal

The phase transition of the quantum Ising model is sharp
An analysis is presented of the phase transition of the quantum Ising model
with transverse field on the d-dimensional hypercubic lattice. It is shown that
there is a unique sharp transition. The value of the critical point is
calculated rigorously in one dimension. The first step is to express the
quantum Ising model in terms of a (continuous) classical Ising model in d+1
dimensions. A so-called `random-parity' representation is developed for the
latter model, similar to the random-current representation for the classical
Ising model on a discrete lattice. Certain differential inequalities are
proved. Integration of these inequalities yields the sharpness of the phase
transition, and also a number of other facts concerning the critical and

Consistent histories, the quantum Zeno effect, and time of arrival
We present a decomposition of the general quantum mechanical evolution
operator, that corresponds to the path decomposition expansion, and interpret
its constituents in terms of the quantum Zeno effect (QZE). This decomposition
is applied to a finite dimensional example and to the case of a free particle
in the real line, where the possibility of boundary conditions more general
than those hitherto considered in the literature is shown. We reinterpret the
assignment of consistent probabilities to different regions of spacetime in
terms of the QZE. The comparison of the approach of consistent histories to the
problem of time of arrival with the solution provided by the probability
distribution of Kijowski shows the strength of the latter point of view
Prevention is better than cure, but...: Preventive medication as a risk to ordinariness?
Preventive health remains at the forefront of public health concerns; recent initiatives, such as the NHS health check, may lead to recommendations for medication in response to the identification of 'at risk' individuals. Little is known about lay views of preventive medication. This paper uses the case of aspirin as a prophylactic against heart disease to explore views among people invited to screening for a trial investigating the efficacy of such an approach. Qualitative interviews (N=46) and focus groups (N=5, participants 31) revealed dilemmas about preventive medication in the form of clashes between norms: first, in general terms, assumptions about the benefit of prevention were complicated by dislike of medication; second, the individual duty to engage in prevention was complicated by the need not to be over involved with one's own health; third, the potential appeal of this alternative approach to health promotion was complicated by unease about the implications of encouraging irresponsible behaviour among others. Deformations of calibrated D-branes in flux generalized complex manifolds
We study massless deformations of generalized calibrated cycles, which
describe, in the language of generalized complex geometry, supersymmetric
D-branes in N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with fluxes. We find that the
deformations are classified by the first cohomology group of a Lie algebroid
canonically associated to the generalized calibrated cycle, seen as a
generalized complex submanifold with respect to the integrable generalized
complex structure of the bulk. We provide examples in the SU(3) structure case
and in a `genuine' generalized complex structure case. We discuss cases of
lifting of massless modes due to world-volume fluxes, background fluxes and a

Local fluctuations in quantum critical metals
We show that spatially local, yet low-energy, fluctuations can play an
essential role in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems tuned to
a quantum critical point. A detailed microscopic analysis of the Kondo lattice
model is carried out within an extended dynamical mean-field approach. The
correlation functions for the lattice model are calculated through a
self-consistent Bose-Fermi Kondo problem, in which a local moment is coupled
both to a fermionic bath and to a bosonic bath (a fluctuating magnetic field).
A renormalization-group treatment of this impurity problem--perturbative in
, where is an exponent characterizing the spectrum
of the bosonic bath--shows that competition between the two couplings can drive
the local-moment fluctuations critical. As a result, two distinct types of
quantum critical point emerge in the Kondo lattice, one being of the usual
spin-density-wave type, the other ``locally critical.'' Near the locally
critical point, the dynamical spin susceptibility exhibits scaling
with a fractional exponent. While the spin-density-wave critical point is
Gaussian, the locally critical point is an interacting fixed point at which
long-wavelength and spatially local critical modes coexist. A Ginzburg-Landau
description for the locally critical point is discussed. It is argued that
these results are robust, that local criticality provides a natural description
of the quantum critical behavior seen in a number of heavy-fermion metals, and

We provide a natural affine symplectic frame for Lagrangian curves. It allows us to classify La- grangrian curves with constant symplectic curvatures, to construct a class of Lagrangian tori in R4 and determine Lagrangian geodesic
School-based prevention for adolescent Internet addiction: prevention is the key. A systematic literature review
Adolescentsâ media use represents a normative need for information, communication, recreation and functionality, yet problematic Internet use has increased. Given the arguably alarming prevalence rates worldwide and the increasingly problematic use of gaming and social media, the need for an integration of prevention efforts appears to be timely. The aim of this systematic literature review is (i) to identify school-based prevention programmes or protocols for Internet Addiction targeting adolescents within the school context and to examine the programmesâ effectiveness, and (ii) to highlight strengths, limitations, and best practices to inform the design of new initiatives, by capitalizing on these studiesâ recommendations. The findings of the reviewed studies to date presented mixed outcomes and are in need of further empirical evidence. The current review identified the following needs to be addressed in future designs to: (i) define the clinical status of Internet Addiction more precisely, (ii) use more current psychometrically robust assessment tools for the measurement of effectiveness (based on the most recent empirical developments), (iii) reconsider the main outcome of Internet time reduction as it appears to be problematic, (iv) build methodologically sound evidence-based prevention programmes, (v) focus on skill enhancement and the use of protective and harm-reducing factors, and (vi) include IA as one of the risk behaviours in multi-risk behaviour interventions. These appear to be crucial factors in addressing future research designs and the formulation of new prevention initiatives. Validated findings could then inform promising strategies for IA and gaming prevention in public policy and education
