Anaplasmosis in Cattle
On September 6, 1975, one cow in a herd of 36 near Aplington, Iowa, was found by the owner as being slow and weak. Dr. Eldon Uhlenhopp was called to examine the cow. The cow\u27s mucous membranes were found to be very pale and icteric. She also had a temperature of 100F. Hemoglobin was determined to be 3 gm %. A differential diagnosis of anaplasmosis or leptospirosis was made
The application of GIS based decision-tree models for generating the spatial distribution of hydromorphic organic landscapes in relation to digital terrain data
Accurate information about organic/mineral soil occurrence is a prerequisite for many land resources management applications (including climate change mitigation). This paper aims at investigating the potential of using geomorphometrical analysis and decision tree modeling to predict the geographic distribution of hydromorphic organic landscapes in unsampled area in Denmark. Nine primary (elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, plan curvature, profile curvature, tangent curvature, flow direction, flow accumulation, and specific catchment area) and one secondary (steady-state topographic wetness index) topographic parameters were generated from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) acquired using airborne LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems. They were used along with existing digital data collected from other sources (soil type, geological substrate and landscape type) to explain organic/mineral field measurements in hydromorphic landscapes of the Danish area chosen. A large number of tree-based classification models (186) were developed using (1) all of the parameters, (2) the primary DEM-derived topographic (morphological/hydrological) parameters only, (3) selected pairs of parameters and (4) excluding each parameter one at a time from the potential pool of predictor parameters. The best classification tree model (with the lowest misclassification error and the smallest number of terminal nodes and predictor parameters) combined the steady-state topographic wetness index and soil type, and explained 68% of the variability in organic/mineral field measurements. The overall accuracy of the predictive organic/inorganic landscapes' map produced (at 1:50 000 cartographic scale) using the best tree was estimated to be ca. 75%. The proposed classification-tree model is relatively simple, quick, realistic and practical, and it can be applied to other areas, thereby providing a tool to facilitate the implementation of pedological/hydrological plans for conservation and sustainable management. Origins of the extragalactic background at 1mm from a combined analysis of the AzTEC and MAMBO data in GOODS-N
We present a study of the cosmic infrared background, which is a measure of
the dust obscured activity in all galaxies in the Universe. We venture to
isolate the galaxies responsible for the background at 1mm; with spectroscopic
and photometric redshifts we constrain the redshift distribution of these
galaxies. We create a deep 1.16mm map (sigma ~ 0.5mJy) by combining the AzTEC
1.1mm and MAMBO 1.2mm datasets in GOODS-N. This combined map contains 41 secure
detections, 13 of which are new. By averaging the 1.16mm flux densities of
individually undetected galaxies with 24um flux densities > 25uJy, we resolve
31--45 per cent of the 1.16mm background. Repeating our analysis on the SCUBA
850um map, we resolve a higher percentage (40--64 per cent) of the 850um
background. A majority of the background resolved (attributed to individual
galaxies) at both wavelengths comes from galaxies at z > 1.3. If the ratio of
the resolved submillimeter to millimeter background is applied to a reasonable
scenario for the origins of the unresolved submillimeter background, 60--88 per
cent of the total 1.16mm background comes from galaxies at z > 1.3.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Accepted by MNRAS. The combined map is publicly

Lens magnification by CL0024+1654 in the U and R band
[ABRIDGED] We estimate the total mass distribution of the galaxy cluster
CL0024+1654 from the measured source depletion due to lens magnification in the
R band. Within a radius of 0.54Mpc/h, a total projected mass of
(8.1+/-3.2)*10^14 M_sol/h (EdS) is measured, which corresponds to a mass-
to-light ratio of M/L(B)=470+/-180. We compute the luminosity function of
CL0024+1654 in order to estimate contamination of the background source counts
from cluster galaxies. Three different magnification-based reconstruction
methods are employed using both local and non-local techniques. We have
modified the standard single power-law slope number count theory to incorporate
a break and applied this to our observations. Fitting analytical magnification
profiles of different cluster models to the observed number counts, we find
that the cluster is best described either by a NFW model with scale radius
r_s=334+/-191 kpc/h and normalisation kappa_s=0.23+/-0.08 or a power-law
profile with slope xi=0.61+/-0.11, central surface mass density
kappa_0=1.52+/-0.20 and assuming a core radius of r_core=35 kpc/h. The NFW
model predicts that the cumulative projected mass contained within a radius R
scales as M(<R)=2.9*10^14*(R/1')^[1.3-0.5lg (R/1')] M_sol/h. Finally, we have
exploited the fact that flux magnification effectively enables us to probe
deeper than the physical limiting magnitude of our observations in searching
for a change of slope in the U band number counts. We rule out both a total
flattening of the counts with a break up to U_AB<=26.6 and a change of slope,
reported by some studies, from dlog N/dm=0.4->0.15 up to U_AB<=26.4 with 95%

From the Heart of The Ghoul: C and N Abundances in the Corona of Algol B
Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph observations of Algol
have been used to determine the abundances of C and N in the secondary star for
the first time. The analysis was performed relative to similar observations of
an adopted "standard" star HR 1099. It is demonstrated that HR 1099 and Algol
are coronal twins in many respects and that their X-ray spectra are very
similar in nearly all details, except for the observed strengths of C and N
lines. The H-like transitions of C and N in the coronae of Algol and HR 1099
demonstrate that the surface abundances of Algol B have been strongly modified
by CN-processing, as shown earlier by Schmitt & Ness (2002). It is found that N
is enhanced in Algol B by a factor of 3 compared to HR 1099. No C lines are
detected in the Algol spectrum, indicating a C depletion relative to HR 1099 by
a factor of 10 or more. These C and N abundances indicate that Algol B must
have lost at least half of its initial mass, and are consistent with
predictions of evolutionary models that include non-conservative mass transfer
and angular momentum loss through magnetic activity. Little or no dredge-up of
material subjected to CN-processing has occurred on the subgiant component of
HR 1099. It is concluded that Fe is very likely depleted in the coronae of both
Algol and HR 1099 relative to their photospheres by 0.5 dex, and C, N and O by

A behavioral theory of alliance portfolio reconfiguration: Evidence from pharmaceutical biotechnology
Research summary: Extant research suggests that firms rationally evaluate external and/or internal contingencies when deciding how to reconfigure their alliance portfolios. We advance a behavioral perspective which assumes that managers are boundedly rational and thus rely on behavioral heuristics when making alliance portfolio reconfiguration decisions. In panel data on U.S.-listed biotechnology firms, we find that below-aspiration performance motivates a firm to form alliances with novel partners within the resource scope of its existing alliance portfolio. This effect is weakened by equity ties with existing partners and strengthened by firm-specific uncertainty. Conversely, above-aspiration performance leads to new alliances with existing partners but outside the resource scope of the firm’s existing alliance portfolio. Finally, as organizational slack increases, a firm forms alliances with novel partners focusing on new-to-the-portfolio resources.
Managerial summary: We study why and how firms change the configuration of their alliance portfolios over time. We find that actual performance relative to performance objectives, and firms’ excess resources, are important drivers of such change. The more firms fail to meet their performance objectives, the more likely they are to form alliances with novel partners focusing on areas in which they already have one or more alliances with other partners. The more firms exceed their performance objectives, the greater their inclination to form alliances with their existing partners in areas in which they do not yet have alliances. The greater the stock of excess resources, the greater firms’ propensities to form alliances with novel partners focusing on areas in which they do not yet have alliances
Revision of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: Success or Failure?
BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a safe and frequently performed bariatric procedure. Unfortunately, re-operations are often necessary. Reports on the success of revisional procedures are scarce and show variable results, either supporting or declining the idea of revising LAGB. This study describes a large cohort of re-operations after failed LAGB to determine the success of revision. METHODS: By use of a prospective cohort, all LAGB revisions performed between 1996 and 2008 were identified. From 301 primary LAGB procedures in our centre, 43 patients (14.3%) required a band revision. In addition, 51 patients were referred from other centres. Our analysis included in total 94 patients with a mean follow-up period of 38 months after revision. RESULTS: Revision was mainly necessary due to anterior slippage (46%) and symmetrical pouch dilatation (36%), which could be resolved by replacing (70%) or refixating the band (27%). Weight loss significantly increased after revision (excess BMI loss (EBMIL), 37.2 +/- 36.3% versus 47.5 +/- 30.4%, P < 0.05). After revision, 23 patients (24%) needed a second re-operation. Patients converted to other procedures (16%) during the second re-operation showed larger weight loss than the revised group (EBMIL, 64.3 +/- 28.1% versus 44.3 +/- 28.7%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We report on a large cohort of LAGB revisions with 38 months of follow-up. Revision of failed LAGB by either refixation or replacement of the band is successful and further increases weight loss
The Quiet-Sun Photosphere and Chromosphere
The overall structure and the fine structure of the solar photosphere outside
active regions are largely understood, except possibly important roles of a
turbulent near-surface dynamo at its bottom, internal gravity waves at its top,
and small-scale vorticity. Classical 1D static radiation-escape modelling has
been replaced by 3D time-dependent MHD simulations that come closer to reality.
The solar chromosphere, in contrast, remains ill-understood although its
pivotal role in coronal mass and energy loading makes it a principal research
area. Its fine structure defines its overall structure, so that hard-to-observe
and hard-to-model small-scale dynamical processes are the key to understanding.
However, both chromospheric observation and chromospheric simulation presently
mature towards the required sophistication. The open-field features seem of
