Stellar Contribution to the Galactic Bulge Microlensing Optical Depth
We estimate the optical depth to self-lensing by stars in the Galactic bulge
using the HST star counts of Holtzman et al and Zoccali et al as extrapolated
by Gould into the brown-dwarf and remnant regimes and deprojected along the
line of sight using the model of Dwek et al. We find a self-lensing optical
depth tau(bulge-bulge)=0.98 x 10^{-6}. When combined with the lensing of bulge
stars by foreground stars in the disk, this yields tau(bulge-total)=1.63 x
10^{-6}, in reasonable agreement with the estimates of tau=2.13 +/- 0.40 x
10^{-6} and tau=1.08 +/- 0.30 x 10^{-6} based on observations of clump giants

The MACHO project: Microlensing Optical Depth towards the Galactic Bulge from Difference Image Analysis
We present the microlensing optical depth towards the Galactic bulge based on
the detection of 99 events found in our Difference Image Analysis (DIA) survey.
This analysis encompasses three years of data, covering ~ 17 million stars in ~
4 deg^2, to a source star baseline magnitude limit of V = 23. The DIA technique
improves the quality of photometry in crowded fields, and allows us to detect
more microlensing events with faint source stars. We find this method increases
the number of detection events by 85% compared with the standard analysis
technique. DIA light curves of the events are presented and the microlensing
fit parameters are given. The total microlensing optical depth is estimated to
be tau_(total)= 2.43^(+0.39/-0.38) x 10^(-6) averaged over 8 fields centered at
l=2.68 and b=-3.35. For the bulge component we find
tau_(bulge)=3.23^(+0.52/-0.50) x 10^(-6) assuming a 25% stellar contribution
from disk sources. These optical depths are in good agreement with the past
determinations of the MACHO Alcock et al. (1997) and OGLE Udalski et al. (1994)
groups, and are higher than predicted by contemporary Galactic models. We show
that our observed event timescale distribution is consistent with the
distribution expected from normal mass stars, if we adopt the stellar mass
function of Scalo (1986) as our lens mass function. However, we note that as
there is still disagreement about the exact form of the stellar mass function,
there is uncertainty in this conclusion. Based on our event timescale
distribution we find no evidence for the existence of a large population of

Double-blind, placebo-controlled first in human study to investigate an oral vaccine aimed to elicit an immune reaction against the VEGF-Receptor 2 in patients with stage IV and locally advanced pancreatic cancer
BACKGROUND: The investigational oral DNA vaccine VXM01 targets the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) and uses Salmonella typhi Ty21a as a vector. The immune reaction elicited by VXM01 is expected to disrupt the tumor neovasculature and, consequently, inhibit tumor growth. VXM01 potentially combines the advantages of anti-angiogenic therapy and active immunotherapy. METHODS/DESIGN: This phase I trial examines the safety, tolerability, and immunological and clinical responses to VXM01. The randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind dose-escalation study includes up to 45 patients with locally advanced and stage IV pancreatic cancer. The patients will receive four doses of VXM01 or placebo in addition to gemcitabine as standard of care. Doses from 10(6) cfu up to 10(10) cfu of VXM01 will be evaluated in the study. An independent data safety monitoring board (DSMB) will be involved in the dose-escalation decisions. In addition to safety as primary endpoint, the VXM01-specific immune reaction, as well as clinical response parameters will be evaluated. DISCUSSION: The results of this study shall provide the first data regarding the safety and immunogenicity of the oral anti-VEGFR-2 vaccine VXM01 in cancer patients. They will also define the recommended dose for phase II and provide the basis for further clinical evaluation, which may also include additional cancer indications. CMB as a possible new tool to study the dark baryons in galaxies
Baryons constitute about 4% of our universe, but most of them are missing and
we do not know where and in what form they are hidden. This constitute the
so-called missing baryon problem. A possibility is that part of these baryons
are hidden in galactic halos. We show how the 7-year data obtained by the WMAP
satellite may be used to trace the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31.
We detect a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo along the rotation direction
up to about 120 kpc. This could be the first detection of a galactic halo in
microwaves and may open a new way to probe hidden baryons in these relatively
less studied galactic objects using high accuracy CMB measurements.Comment: 8 pages, presented at the III Italian-Pakistani Workshop on

New coil concept for endoluminal MR imaging: Initial results in staging of gastric carcinoma in correlation with Histopathology
Our aim was to conduct a prospective study to evaluate staging accuracy of a new coil concept for endoluminal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on ex vivo gastric carcinomas. Twenty-eight consecutive patients referred to surgery with a clinically proven primary gastric malignancy were included. Surgical specimens were examined with a foldable and self-expanding loop coil (8-cm diameter) at 1.5 Tesla immediately after total gastrectomy. T1- and T2-weighted and opposed-phase sequences (axial, frontal sections; 3- to 4-mm slice thickness) were acquired. Investigators blinded to any patient information analyzed signal intensity of normal gastric wall, gastric tumor, and lymph nodes. Findings were compared with histopathological staging. On surgical specimens, 2–5 gastric wall layers could be visualized. All gastric tumors (26 carcinomas, two lymphomas) were identified on endoluminal MR data (100%). Overall accuracy for T staging was 75% (18/24); sensitivity to detect serosal involvement was 80% and specificity 89%. N staging correlated in 58% (14/24) with histopathology (N+ versus N−). The endoluminal coil concept is feasible and applicable for an ex vivo setting. Endoluminal MR data provided sufficient detail for gastric wall layer differentiation, and therefore, identification of T stages in gastric carcinoma is possible. Further investigations in in vivo settings should explore the potential of our coil concept for endoluminal MR imaging
Microlensing as a probe of the Galactic structure; 20 years of microlensing optical depth studies
Microlensing is now a very popular observational astronomical technique. The
investigations accessible through this effect range from the dark matter
problem to the search for extra-solar planets. In this review, the techniques
to search for microlensing effects and to determine optical depths through the
monitoring of large samples of stars will be described. The consequences of the
published results on the knowledge of the Milky-Way structure and its dark
matter component will be discussed. The difficulties and limitations of the
ongoing programs and the perspectives of the microlensing optical depth

Organic residues in archaeology - the highs and lows of recent research
YesThe analysis of organic residues from archaeological materials has become increasingly important to our understanding of ancient diet, trade and technology. Residues from diverse contexts have been retrieved and analysed from the remains of food, medicine and cosmetics to hafting material on stone arrowheads, pitch and tar from shipwrecks, and ancient manure from soils. Research has brought many advances in our understanding of archaeological, organic residues over the past two decades. Some have enabled very specific and detailed interpretations of materials preserved in the archaeological record. However there are still areas where we know very little, like the mechanisms at work during the formation and preservation of residues, and areas where each advance produces more questions rather than answers, as in the identification of degraded fats.
